Responsibility to Care - Our Brother's Keeper?
The daily news provides abundant examples of people failing to care for those for whom they are responsible. Recently the world witnessed the dramatic failure of the designer of the Titan submersible to put the safety of his crew ahead of his personal ambition. But that is just one of many examples where leaders, politicians, teachers, parents or others in positions of responsibility have failed to care for their people. At the very beginning of the story of humanity, God answers the question of, "Am I my brother's keeper?' with a resounding 'YES!" In fact the prophets continue this message with warnings couched in metaphor to the 'shepherds' who fail to care for their flock. Often God uses the lives of his people as object lessons to teach this important principle. The story of Jacob's sons who sell their pesky younger brother into slavery in Egypt is one such tale. In spite of jealousy, betrayal, and heartache, in the end the brothers learn that their sins will find them out. But they also learn the importance of being their brothers' keeper. Our challenge as God's people is to have his mind and heart and express to others the kind of love that reflects God's nature. We need to ask ourselves if we are being diligent in choosing what God prefers and then taking action for the benefit of those in our care.

Chanukah's Message: Present, Past and Future - Tyrants Disappearing
The world is trying to grapple with the events of the past few months in the Middle East, but this is nothing new. Our present situation has a powerful connection to events of the past and the prophecy of Daniel about the Seleucid Empire's attempts to dominate Judea. And the question of good and evil is still the one that should be foremost in our minds. God warns us of the consequences of falling prey to the idea that good and evil are relative, or that good is evil and evil is good. Scripture also warns us that there is a price to pay if we do not resist the evil or if we fail to give aid to those who would otherwise be destroyed by evil. The prophetic message of Chanukah from Christ's perspective is both a warning to not be deceived by the evil and an encouragement to rededicate ourselves to God and the way of truth during this winter time of Dedication.

Lessons from Exodus - Hard Hearts or Sincerity and Truth
The Exodus from Egypt tested Pharaoh's heart, but it also tested the hearts of the people God was delivering from slavery. Would they listen to the truth and walk in faith? Or would their hard hearts cause them to stumble and not enter their promised land? Could they leave Egypt and its culture behind and embrace God's light and his teachings? Or would they continue to walk in darkness with blind eyes and hard hearts unable to leave behind the ways they had learned in Egypt? As followers of the Lord, we face many of the same challenges in trying to leave a toxic society that despises God's teachings. So how do we overcome the very human tendency towards a heart hardened by stubbornness and self-will? How can we have the circumcised and contrite heart that will help us to enter our promised land? Let the scriptures encourage you in your walk with God.

Syncretism — Tolerating Lies?
Sometimes the truth is 'hard to swallow' so people settle for a convenient syncretism — a comforting blend of truth and lies. Jesus had spoken to his disciples and followers about 'drinking his blood and eating his body.' But what he said was difficult to understand, even offensive, and as a result many stopped following Jesus. They did not understand that the Passover symbols of bread and wine were given to represent Jesus' death, his body and blood. It was only through this sacrifice that he could give the gift of eternal life to all who trusted in him.
Jesus also spoke a hard truth to the Samaritans, who thought they were following God's will in their religious worship. But the reality was that they had a long history of syncretism, blending the truth of God with their traditions.

Petitions, Prayers, Intercessions and Thanksgiving
God hears the petitions and prayers of his people. Whether we are in personal distress, or our nations are facing daunting foes, our prayers can make all the difference. Hezekiah, the King of Judah, knew this to be true when the Assyrians attacked Jerusalem. Earlier, Hezekiah had been on his death bed, but God had heard his prayers and seen his tears, and healed him of a fatal illness. So when Sennacharib's army began to demolish the cities of Judah, Hezekiah knew where to turn for help.

Lessons from Exodus — God Our Healer
One of the great lessons of the Exodus was that God would provide. He would be their leader and guide to the promised land and he could be trusted to keep his promises. One of those promises was that the people would not suffer all the diseases of Egypt and its culture. But this would also be a test of the people and their willingness to follow God's guidance and obey his instructions.
God's way allows for free will and the ability of individuals to make choices. God had provided the path for the people to walk and he promised to be with them, but they needed to embrace God's ways and walk with him.
God reiterated that he was their healer, but God's first principle of wellness was what we would call 'preventative medicine.'
There was no spiritual 'dualism' in God's approach, both the body and mind of those who walked with God were to become temples of the spirit of God. This message relating to physical health was also fundamental to the teachings of the church in Paul's day. View the video and learn more about God's wellness plan.

Prayer — When Prayer is Under Attack
There is a major push to remove prayer to God, our heavenly Father, out of the public square. Prayer has been challenged by those who don't believe it can make.a difference.
So what should we be doing as people who believe and follow the scriptural narrative?
Jesus had a lot to say about prayer in response to the formulaic prayers of the religious leaders of his time. He knew useless repetitive prayers were unproductive. But he also used parables to teach the importance of praying faithfully and with persistence. God does hear our prayers and will answer, but perhaps not in the way we might expect or according to the timetable we have in mind. Consider the example of Hezekiah and the outcome of his prayers to God in the face of an overwhelming foe - the Assyrians who had conquered all the land outside of Jerusalem. Be encouraged by Hannah's prayer and God's speedy answer. And understand the importance of being patient and persevering as you examine the life of Paul and see the way in which God answered his prayer to be with the brethren in Rome.

Jeremiah the Prophet's Message to Rulers and Citizens
God has a message for those who would take up the mantle of leadership of God's people. It is not a comforting message. God is testing all of his people to discern whether they will listen to his counsel or not.
Jeremiah the prophet, in a time of great national turmoil, was given a message to deliver to the people. God likened the nation to two baskets of figs, one was good and the other was rotten. God explains how he would preserve the good figs, those who trusted him and did what was right. He also warned the 'rotten figs' that unless they changed their corrupt, self-serving ways they would be destroyed.
There are lessons today for those in positions of leadership who are building their 'palaces' with slave labour, abusing their people and defying God's will. There is also a message of hope for those who trust God and follow his teachings. It is time we all consider where we stand and how God will work in our lives.

War or Peace — What is Your Vision for the Future
War or Peace? Our world longs for peace and a way out of misery, suffering and death. But is the world willing to make the changes necessary to eradicate war and promote peace? Are there too many people in the world who love war and hate peace? Are there those whose conflicting passions, envy, selfishness and evil deeds make war the natural consequence? The Lord God, the Word of God, makes it clear that there is no peace for the wicked, it is merely a matter of cause and effect.
The story of Jehu and his overthrow of Ahab's dynasty is a case in point. It is self-deception to think that idolatry, murder, and deceit can produce anything but conflict — war! Yet the scriptures give us more than warnings of future warfare it also give us hope of future peace. This vision of peace is taught from Genesis to Revelation and the prophecies of a future time of peace are promises made by the God who never lies and is ever-faithful.
Do you know what the scripture teaches in regards to how peace will be achieved and the scourge of war will end? And have you considered how these prophecies are meant to impact our daily lives, giving us hope and providing us with wisdom to walk in peace now?
Let's search the scriptures together to understand God's mind on the matter of war or peace.

Hamas Attacks Israel: A Scriptural Refletion
Two millennia ago, Jesus Christ had a message for the people of Judea that resonates in our world. He spoke of the tragedies of his time when the Galileans were murdered by Pilate and the Tower of Siloam fell and many were killed. He also reflected on the nature of Jerusalem and its people in his day and what the future had in store for the people of Israel in Judea.
This message harkened back to the Song of Moses written before Israel entered their promised land. It was a song recounting Israel's wilderness experience and prophesying about the future of the people and the land. Many of its verses seem to have a partial fulfillment in our time - a time when the people of Judah have surprisingly returned to their inheritance and been re-established in the land centuries after the destruction of their temple state.
Listen to the prophecies of Isaiah and Zechariah to gain insight into what was foretold by God. They reveal a picture of God's justice, his mercy and his purpose for Israel that will be fulfilled in the future. God is faithful and he will deal justly with the evil-doers and those who turn to him for mercy. Consider the message of the prophets to us and be encouraged in spite of the times of trouble that we may be enduring at the present.

Lessons from the Exodus — Temptations
Christ left his disciples with a message of warning to watch and pray so they would not give into life's temptations. James reminded his readers that temptation and testing was a vital part of the believer's walk. For it was through testing that we were to build faith and develop endurance. The story of Israel's Exodus and journey through the wilderness was one of failing to resist the temptations they faced. Paul used their example to encourage the brethren to be faithful in facing the tests and temptations that were part of living in Corinth, a city known for its licentious idolatrous culture. Paul wanted people to consider the lessons to be garnered from the lives of the Israelites in the wilderness, as well as, Achan, Samson, David and others who succumbed to temptations and brought great misery on themselves and others. We all face temptations prompted by personal desires or the pressures of adversity. No generation has been exempt from the temptations that John summarized as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.
The good news is that God provides the way out of every temptation. He has the answer and the antidote for the temptations that could lead us into sins that undermine our relationship with Christ and our Father. Let the scriptures provide you with the mindset, the thoughts, and the attitudes that will help you meet and overcome every temptation. Loyalty and the 9th of Av
In a time of divided loyalties, who deserves your loyalty and trust? Our loyalties are the product of our values and what we esteem highly. For those who profess a belief in the Creator God, it is God alone who deserves our loyalty first and foremost, for he is loyal and can be trusted. Yet, in reading many biblical accounts, it is evident that God tests the loyalty of those who follow him.
God declared to Abraham that through his son Isaac, the covenant relationship and the way of the Lord would be preserved. So how was Abraham going to react when he was challenged by God to offer his son - his only son and the heir of promise - as a sacrifice? This was a great test of loyalty. Would God fulfill his promise?
God had promised that he would lead the Israelites out of Egypt to the promised land. So, how would the people react when they heard the spies negative report on the nature of the land of Canaan? Would they trust in God who had just delivered them from Egyptian slavery through powerful miracles? Would they be loyal to God and act in faith, trusting God's promise?
God had Jeremiah and Baruch warn the people of Judah to repent and return to him so they would avoid national disaster and the destruction of Jerusalem? Would they be loyal to God, or would they act rashly based on their fears.
Consider also the life of Peter, for he declared his undying loyalty to Christ, and yet failed to live up to his words when his loyalty was severely tested. And yet his example gives us hope, and some lessons to consider in our walk with God, so that we will remain loyal when tested.

Attached to God — The Remedy for Separation
Are we 'attached' to God and what does this mean in daily life? Gordon Neufeld, an inspiring speaker has proposed a developmental model for human growth based on the power of attachment of children to nurturing parents. This model is also useful in considering our spiritual parent, our Father, and our relationship to him as his children. Just as children attach to parents and family life, so God's children are in a deep and abiding, lifelong relationship with him. We need to be close to God, imitating his actions, loyal to his values, feeling loved and appreciated, and knowing that God understands our deepest yearning. And yet. there are times when we misstep, derail, and fall short of God's expectations for us. What then? Is God only there for us when we please him? Or does God provide a remedy to bridge those things that separate us from God?
Consider this powerful hope that we have in God's grace and mercy, so we can continue to walk with him even after we have stumbled. And then consider the implications for family life and mending relationships between parents and children.

Living in the Presence of God
From the beginning the Lord's intent was that his people would live in the presence of God, and become holy as God is holy. He desired a close intimate family relationship with those he would call to dwell with him. He walked and talked with Abraham, he spoke to his people Israel from the mountain top, and he conferred directly with Moses and the elders of the nation. Are we living in God's presence, fully aware of his desires for us?

Blessings or Curses — What will You Choose?
The discovery of the Mt. Ebal Curse tablet has provided evidence of the historicity of the biblical accounts in the books of Deuteronomy and Joshua.
Do you know the story?
Moses had instructed that the whole nation and the foreigners with them were to proclaim blessings on Mt. Gerizim and curses on Mt. Ebal after they had entered the promised land. This dramatic chorus was led by Joshua and the Priests who read from the writings of Moses as God had spoken them to him.
So what is the take-away for Christians in our time? Are there still blessings and curses? Has the Lord God of Israel changed, or is he the same today as he was in the past and will continue to be in the future. Interestingly, Jesus conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. This was in the area of Shechem the same area where God had asked the people to display their devotion to his way of life by giving their assent to the blessings and cursings. So the question today remains unchanged from that of millennia ago, " Will we follow Christ, the Lord God, on the good path and receive his blessings, or not?"

Children of God — Spiritual DNA — Who is Your Father
Children of God — Spiritual DNA
The religious leaders of Jesus’ day claimed that they were children of God, and heirs of the promises made to Abraham. The irony was that they were also plotting to murder Jesus, something that would have been anathema to Abraham, their forefather. Jesus’ took the opportunity to discuss with them the issue of ‘Who is your Father,’ and point out the reality of who his Father was. Jesus’ observations infuriated them. Do you know what he said and why?
The question of who is our ‘progenitor’ spiritually speaking is still of vital importance and in many interesting ways our spiritual DNA mirrors the functions of physical DNA. Join us as we examine the scriptures and come to a deeper understanding of God’s spirit and how it works in us to fulfil a host of critical functions.

Pentecost — Living Pure Lives through the Spirit
The Feast of Pentecost looks forward to the time prophesied by Malachi and it looks back to the giving of the law at Sinai. But there is a common thread. God is looking for the pure in heart to worship him. On occasion, God does break into history as he did when he spoke the commandments from the top of the mountain. But at the future time prophesied by Malachi, only the pure will be able to face the Lord when he returns to the earth.
So, what is that pure heart that the Lord God appreciates?
