Why is Deuteronomy Vital for Christians?
Traditionally, the book of Deuteronomy was read orally to the people of Israel during the Feast of Tabernacles. There was a command to read it every seven years so each generation would be versed in the laws of the land. But what is the significance for Christians? You may be surprised to learn that while being tempted by Satan, Jesus countered Satan's insinuations with the phrase, "It is written." Then Jesus proceeded to quote from the book of Deuteronomy as his authoritative source for setting priorities and determining what was true.

Atonement — Forgive Us Our Debts as...
The Lord's Prayer has interesting parallels to the themes of the day of Atonement. This is especially true when it comes to 'forgive us our debts.' Often we think of these debts as 'sins' — missing the mark or sins of commission. But it also has the sense of not having fulfilled a duty — sins of omission. We owe God for those times when we failed to do our duty and yet he is faithful to forgive. But there is a caveat. Do you know what it is?

Still Faithful after All these Years
In our lifetime we have experienced conditions that were prophesied by Paul, Jude and Peter. We have lived through the rise and collapse of church organizations often the result of infighting, divisions and discontent among elders and brethren. It is at such times, when the church institutions and the world around us is crumbling into chaos, that we need to reflect on those foundational concepts that help us to continue to walk in faith with God.
Here are some questions to ponder:
Are we thoroughly grounded in the scripture with a sure knowledge of the conditions in the 'latter days' so we will not be overthrown in times of apostasy?
Are we standing firm in the truth so we will not be deceived by the ungodly, no matter what 'miracles' they claim to perform?
Are we committed to God and acting sincerely and without hypocrisy so that we are living our faith and patiently growing in love?
Are we convicted of the assurances that God gives us that blessings will come if we are walking with our Shepherd as he leads us in the good way?
Is our hope in God's promised gift of eternal life unshakeable, and does it motivate us to do the good works that the Father has called us to perform?
Take a few minutes to join us and consider the words of exhortation from the scriptures that will help us in our walk of faith.

Are You Walking With God?
The bible teaches an amazing truth that the Creator, The Word, became a man and in so doing has made it possible for his followers to have a hope of eternal life with him.
Yet there are many in the world of religion that deny this basic teaching of scripture and instead , like the Pharisees of Jesus day, they have set up their own religious standards.
God on the other had has told us that he is looking for justice, loving kindness, and humility in walking with him. So what does it mean to"'walk with God?" How do we walk with anyone?
The basics should be obvious. We must agree to walk to together, we must have the same destination in mind, and we must walk at the same pace being considerate of each other.
But beyond these rudimentary principles God gives us what he expects of those who walk with him.
Consider John's message about Jesus walking on the road to Emmaus, or Paul's admonitions to walk worthy of our calling, or Jude's warning to avoid walking like Cain, Balaam or Korah. Remember Jesus' admonition to Peter and examine ourselves to determine whether we are truly walking with God as we ought.

Are You Awake to God's Promises?
Are you awake to what God will be doing in the coming year? There are those who espouse 'Christianity' who do not believe that God will keep his promises. Or perhaps they think that the prophecies were already completed in some historical past. Do you know what God says and do you trust him to be the same yesterday, today and forever?
In a time of asymmetrical warfare our Western Democracies are under great strain. We need to ask ourselves whether our current dilemmas are the result of having forgotten God's ways so that instead of walking fearlessly on his straight path we are stumbling in the darkness. Jesus warned about the false prophets caught up in their faulty predictions of the future, while also reminding us of the need to be prepared for his return - a return that will surely come.
So do we believe that God will yet fulfill the prophecies that he delivered to his people over the centuries - prophecies of a righteous remnant who would be delivered and return to restore and rebuild Zion? Were the prophets mistaken? Did God change his mind and his promises are no longer valid? Or, will the Lord God return to save his people, those who trust in him? Will he forgive and redeem those who repent so they will be awake to God's purpose?
In the coming year let us be among those who are aware of God's plans and awake to righteousness.

Avoiding the Traps of the Self-Righteous
Our age is not unlike that of Jesus' time and he warned us to avoid the traps of the self-righteous. The 'Wokies' of today, like the Pharisees of Jesus' day, reject God's standards in favour of their own redefining of what is right or wrong. They have taken a 'holier-than-thou' self-righteous approach that has abandoned the faith and morality of scripture and is intolerant of anyone who does not accept their new orthodoxy.
And yet, the scripture provides examples of Pharisees who took a stand rejecting the majority view and embracing the truth that Jesus' taught.
How would Jesus react to the Woke leaders of western society? Would he point out their hypocrisy and deceitfulness? Would he criticize them for their self-seeking, self-serving lust for power and status? And what advice would Jesus give to his followers today so as to avoid stumbling into the traps of the proud and self-righteous? Consider what the scriptures reveal so we can embrace what God says is good.

Obey the Authorities?
Does the bible offer conflicting advice as to whether we should obey civil or state authorities or not? Consider the advice of the Paul who lived in Rome and offered wisdom to the brethren in Rome about living quiet and peaceful lives under the rule of a pagan regime. Consider the wisdom of Peter and the other apostles who challenged the authority of the ruling elite in Judea. How do we reconcile these stories and draw conclusions about our relationship as Christians to the state authorities in our locale at this time in history. The bible provides us with the answers we need to make wise choices.

God's Covenants — Abraham's Children
God made a covenant with Abraham, and if we are Christians we are heirs to that covenant and the promises made to Abraham. Do you know the history of the covenant and how we as Christians have become Abraham's children? Do you understand the nature of the covenant and its implications for you as one who has believed the gospel of Christ? Do you appreciate the importance of following in Abraham's footsteps and walking with God in faith?
The scriptures reveal the answers to all of our questions about this covenant , a covenant that is irrevocable and of vital importance to all who look to God as their Father.

Who Are You — What is Your Identity?
Our world likes to label people in ways that cause division. Society would define you and assign you your identity according to its values.
But this is not the way God defines us! If we have come into a relationship with God we are no longer viewed according to our gender, our status in society, or our ethnic heritage. Rather we have been given a new identity as children of God. In God's family we are all 'one' and not divided by our physical heritage or characteristics. For God places no value on our wealth, prowess, worldly wisdom or noble status. In fact, God makes it plain that he has chosen those the world rejects and despises. God has called into his family those the world considers to be foolish and weak and yet they are the ones who will achieve God's great purpose.
So God identifies his children as those who listen to him and follow Jesus Christ their Messiah. It is they who will make a suitable dwelling place for God in their lives by their willingness to grow in spiritual maturity and serve God's purpose.
So what is that purpose? How is that purpose tied to the new way and new identity that God gives to his people? The apostle Paul wrote extensively about God's perspectives on these matters so we all could be encouraged and have the patience and confidence we need to face life's challenges. Let's examine Paul's life so we might consider how it is that when we are weak God can make us strong to do his will.

Stressed? — God's Solution
When faced with bad news, disastrous events or conditions, our fear of the uncertainties of our situation whether personal or societal, can create in us a stress response of anxiety, frustration, anger, or despair.
We may not be able to escape these situations that cause us 'distress.' But we have the free will to help us reframe how we view these stressors and focus on godly priorities.
Of course even medical science knows that unmitigated stress can produce hormonal changes that cause mental conditions like depression or physical conditions like high blood pressure. So to live the abundant life God intends for us, we must deal effectively with the stress in our life.
God did not promise a stress-free existence, rather he assured those who followed him that they would face all of life's challenges. But there would be a difference between those who face stresses without God's vision and those who understand God's purpose in their lives.
Many of the biblical writers encourage us to know that God knows and appreciates our situation whatever the circumstances might be that are stressing us. His love for his children is unwavering and his commitment to our ultimate good is steadfast. He is able to free us from our fears and provide our every need.
So then the question becomes one of, 'What must we do and what is God's counsel to those who are in the midst of suffering and stressful situations?'
The scriptures offer sound advice.

Forgiveness, Faith and Obedience - A Tale of Four Passovers
There are major differences between the Good Friday - Easter tradition and the biblical Passover- Unleavened Bread festival that relate to the issue of faith and obedience. Are we following the biblical instructions and 'hitting the target' or are we 'missing the mark' and continuing in sin. Are we disobedient like Adam who heard God's instructions but did not do them? Or, are we following in Jesus' footsteps who both listened to and performed all the the Father had asked him to do?
We demonstrate our obedience to God, in that having been forgiven, we step out in faith to do and to teach others to do God's will in all matters. The stories relating to the Passover give us a powerful testimony of the need for faithful obedience.

Salvation is of the Jews??
In a time of rising anti-semitism, Jesus statement that 'Salvation is of the Jews' seems antithetical to many who consider themselves Christians. So what was Jesus talking about and how should it direct our thought and action today?
Understanding the context of this scripture gives us the first clue and provides us with more questions. Who were the Samaritans, what did they believe and what was their relationship to the scriptures? Answering these questions in their historical context helps us understand what Jesus said and why he said it.
The apostle Paul in writing to the Romans also made some statements about the Jews that the Romans of the day and modern religious folks find difficult to understand. Join us as we search the scriptures to discern God's attitude towards the Jews, so we can be in harmony with him and his perspectives.

Boundaries to Respect - Teach 'All' Things
God's Boundaries
The mission of the disciples of Christ was to go into the world and teach by word and example 'all things' that Jesus had taught. Today, we live in a society that is embracing values that stand in stark opposition to the truth of scripture, and those values that conform to reality as Jesus instructed.
As a result, we face a challenge similar to that of our ancestors in the faith who lived 2,000 years ago. Through the power of God's spirit we must understand the boundaries that we must respect. We must determine those ideas and actions that we must resist at all costs — what is 'unclean' according to the Word of God. We must know what is acceptable to God — what is 'clean.'

God's Promises and Providence
The question of how God works in the lives of his people is one that looms large. Those without faith in God look at the horrors of society and question whether God is at work at all. But we have biblical examples to help us realize the blessing of God's promises and providence for those who serve him and love his ways.
The story of Lot and his wife provide an object lesson about God's deliverance of those who trust him and the consequences of having our hopes and dreams tied up in the material world. The story of Ruth and Naomi gives us the hope that if we set our heart to follow God he will supply all of our needs.
The scripture says 'all things work together for good, for those who love God and are called according to his purpose' What does this mean in the context of the suffering in the world and the hope of God's promises?

Ten Words — #5 Civilization's Lynchpin
The fifth commandment unites the two key concepts of love for God and love for neighbour that provide the executive summary of God's will for humanity. The fifth commandment is one of family loyalty, that is owed to God as our spiritual Father and Creator, and our parents as those who were our first caregivers. And it is the family that has provided the foundation for all civilized society.

In the Image and Likeness of God
Why does God care about humanity? The answer to this question is found in part in the book of Genesis. But this is only the beginning of the story. Here God declared, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness and let him have dominion over the earth." The Psalmist adds to our understanding of God's purpose in that he created human beings with a glory that was a little lower than 'elohim' (God). Jesus in answering the religious leaders of his day, proclaimed that he was a son of God, and yet this should not have astounded them as it did. For Jesus made the same kind of bold declaration as the Psalmist in calling men 'elohim' or sons of God. John, James and Paul all added insights regarding Christ's being the image of the Father and the firstborn son of God. But the Father has a plan to bring many more sons and daughters - made in his image - into his family. Knowing this basic truth these biblical writers offer us wisdom as to how we should live our lives now in preparation for this glorious future. View the message to learn more about our transformation into God's image and likeness as his children.

Coming to God Against His Will?
Paul in writing to Timothy warned against becoming one of those people who had once believed but had turned away from the faith because they had been misled by hypocritical religious leaders. Recently, a major 'Christian' denomination has moved from the doctrinal position of 'God does not bless sin' to a more politically acceptable stance of 'God does not turn away anyone." These are irreconcilable concepts. In fact, this antinomian reasoning seems to fall into the category of the 'way of Balaam' that Peter and John told believers to avoid. So what was Balaam's way and why is it still so destructive? What did that ancient soothsayer do and how is his example instructive to Christians who desire to walk with God?
This story has a lot to say about understanding God's will, who is able to have a relationship with him and what must motivate our thought and action. Many Christians do not know what the scriptures say about what it means to love God or accomplish his will? They want to come to God, but they do not acknowledge the scriptures that reveal how we must love God, what it means to obey him, and under what conditions we are given the Holy Spirit that we might know God?
Consider the witness of the apostles Matthew, John. Paul and Peter in these matters and the implications for your personal walk with God.

Is Anti-Semitism Good or Bad Theology?
Jesus said that a good tree would produce good fruit and a bad tree would produce bad fruit. When we consider the conflict between Hamas and the state of Israel, we realize it is a theological controversy. This controversy and the underlying anti-semitism has ancient roots and the tree has either produced good or bad fruit.
But we will start to examine the story beginning with the history of the Roman world at the time of the Jewish revolts in the first and second century. We will briefly look at the causes of a rising anti-semitism in the state and a subsequent adoption of anti-semitic bias in the early Roman church. We will consider the question of why the early Roman church fathers forsook their Hebrew roots and developed a new 'Gentile Christianity.'
Then we will examine the scriptures to determine God's attitude towards his people and how he dealt with them when they failed to live up to their covenant. God made and reiterated promises to his people, so we must ask whether the God we worship as Christians is a God who keeps his promises. Can we count on God to be good to his word? And if so, do we have the same mindset that God has when it comes to the issue of anti-semitism.
