The Father — Providing the Foundation of Enduring Societies
In our presently chaotic and divisive world, fathers need to look to God our Father as the source of those teachings, values, and methods that will build strong families in spite of the negative social climate.Respectful obedience to honourable parents formed the cornerstone in many harmonious, prosperous communities and the foundation of enduring societies. The importance of honouring father and mother was embedded from the beginning in God's divine directives.

Adversity - Persevere in a Time of Trouble
The prophet Isaiah gives us hope beyond the present adversity and a vision of the future when the Lord of Lords will reign in justice and truth. Meanwhile, we need to look to the scripture to understand God's view on persevering through times of adversity. God did not promise his followers a life of ease, but rather he gives us the hope of the strength and wisdom to make good decisions in times of trouble. Jesus' Olivet prophecy, and his instructions to his disciples provide a snapshot of the kind of trouble we will need to face. But God also provides hope and encouragement for the present and promises of a bright future for those who trust in him.

Do You have a Generous Spirit?
A spirit of generosity is an element that has united brethren for millennia, beginning in those very first weeks when the brethren in the Jerusalem church supported those who had travelled from afar with food and lodging. Our generosity towards others is an outgrowth of God's generosity towards us, for not only has he provided all of our physical benefits but he has given us the great hope of eternal life. Paul in writing to the brethren in Rome, reiterated the vital importance of giving generously in our service to God and to those in our care. He asks us to reflect on whether our spiritual sacrifice reflects that generous spirit in the use of the gifts we have been given. Whether writing to the Corinthians or Ephesians or speaking with the Macedonians or the Greeks in Athen's his generosity of spirit was evidenced in how he treated the believer and the non-believer. Are we living with a deep appreciation of God's graciousness towards us and are we living with that same generosity of spirit in our interactions with others? It's time to consider how we can better reflect God's nature in this matter.

Nature of Lies — Deceivers and the Deceived
What is the nature of lies and why do people tell and believe lies? The scriptures give us keen insights into this issue. The Lord God of Israel, is a place of refuge and a compassionate and just judge. However, he hates and promises to eventually eliminate those who are false witnesses. He hates those whose lying lips are a testimony to their arrogance and contempt for God and those they deceive.

Malachi and the Great Sabbath
Malachi, the messenger of God, wrote the Lord's message to rehearse the events and lessons of previous centuries and to foreshadow future events. He wrote in a time when people were becoming complacent and losing hope. This book which forms a bridge between the Hebrew and Greek scriptures was traditionally read on the Great Sabbath before Passover. In God's great human epic, God warns those who say they are his people but refuse to acknowledge their failings and do what is right. God takes issue with the contemptuous priests, who do not honour him. He will judge those teachers who are hypocrites and show favouritism. And, he will contend with those who are unfaithful to him and to each other. The prophet offers hope of the Messiah's return and challenges every individual to live a life worthy of a child of God. Do you know the advice that Malachi offers to you today?

Restoring the Paths — Repairing the Breaches
The prophet Isaiah wrote to encourage the people of God with a message of hope in restoring the paths and rebuilding the ruins. This was all predicated on the people returning to God and re-establishing justice based on the truth of scripture. History offers us the examples of those who put the pursuit of the truth and doing what was right, ahead of personal ambition or ideology. General Robert E. Lee was such a person, one who was willing to suffer, if need be, to do what was right and honourable. He was willing to act without pride, and to do what was best for his people in suing for peace, instead of pursuing a protracted guerrilla war. What about us? Are we restoring the path and repairing the breaches?

Growing the Mind of God - Wisdom and the Brain
The mission that God has given his people is to walk with him and be 'perfect' but this perfection is the result of a growth process . This is the process that will make us spiritually whole and complete and blameless in God's sight. Unfortunately, though many may hear God's instructions and believe they are doing good works for God the reality is that they are deluding themselves. They have missed key components in the process which would help them grow the mind of God. Just as our human brain develops over a lifetime based on our thoughts and practice, so our spiritual mind grows. We become spiritually what we think and practice and God wants us to think and act based on his revelation. We have been given God's Word so we can come to think and feel as he does, so we can love him and his way with all of our heart and mind. So are we listening to God and faithfully applying this knowledge with wisdom and understanding in our daily lives? When it comes to growing the mind of God, practice does make perfect.

A King's Oath - Modern and Ancient
The recent coronation of King Charles III and his duty to reign justly bring to mind God's instructions to kings and the hope that Christians have of the return of the King of Kings. The modern Oath that the king affirms has many valuable components. However, curiously, the promise to honour God and the law of God are seemingly in opposition to the promise to promote the state church. Jeff considers some of the aspects of the scriptures that highlight this irony and that would pose a dilemma for any king.
We are also encouraged to consider the coming of the successor to the Davidic throne, the Messiah, and his promise that the Saints will be co-heirs with him ruling on his throne. Learn more about what God required of kings, and gain a vision of the future under the rule of the Lord God, the true heir to David's throne.

Children of God — Imitating the Father
Children of God - Imitating the Father
How do children learn? In early life patterns of thought and behaviour are learned through imitation. Children learn to sound and act like those who care for them. Spiritually speaking we are to follow this same pattern of development by imitating Christ — doing what he did. His life was an example, a model for us to admire and emulate. As our Messiah, Jesus came to honour his Father by serving his brethren and teaching as he had been taught. He came to model the attitudes and actions that would lead to abundant life. Sometimes his example was in direct contradiction to the attitudes of his era. Jesus’ approach to children, Gentiles, and the law of God was radically different from the normative societal practices. Are we following the Father’s teachings by imitating Christ in our attitudes and actions?

Restoring the Paths — Rebuilding the Temple
Challenges to Overcome
The biblical story of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and their brothers has many important lessons for those who see the need to restore the paths of God today. They faced many obstacles in fulfilling God's purpose by rebuilding the temple of God at Jerusalem. Though they had received the permission and blessing of King Cyrus of Persia to do the work, the building project was hindered on many fronts. The political powers of the local area felt threatened and were constantly harassing the workers. Some of the workers became weary and turned to their own business interests. Others, seeing the enormity of the task before them and feeling discouraged by very real impediments, just wanted to give up. Others lamented that they were not able to replicate the majesty and beauty of the previous temple. Some wondered if the temple would ever be restored.

What Do We Presume? Sins of Pride 2.0T
The Psalmist wrote extolling the virtues of God's ways, while warning about the danger of presumptuous sins. The proud, the willful, and the presumptuous were those who 'stepped out of bounds.' They did not value God's virtues, his laws, statutes and testimonies. On the other hand, God's people both Jew and Gentile were to be known for their humility and service to God. So which category describes us?

Children of God - Significance in Service
Wise parents know that as children mature they should be given responsibilities in the family to help them feel a part of the family enterprise.
By having family goals and a sense of purpose that incorporates a family’s children in the purpose of achieving those goals, a child’s feeling of belonging to the family increases and that his or her life has meaning and that his or her efforts are valued.
Even mere employees of a corporate enterprise work best and most faithfully when their loyalty and hard work is appreciated by their employer who values their contributions and who shows appreciation for the efforts of their employees.
As family members or merely as employees whenever we are given new responsibilities and our efforts are rewarded with appropriate respect and praise—we feel significant! And this feeling of significance motivates us to accept our given tasks and to seek ever greater service roles, so that we can contribute more to accomplishing the mission of our family or our work place.
But such a building of a family or a business takes insight and proactive action to encourage everyone to do their best in their service. We know this sound, proven practice to be a physical reality, but it is also a spiritual reality.
As members of the Creator God’s family, we have a mission. And our God is developing his ‘koinonia’—His fellowship—to help Him fulfill His mission. And in serving our Creator’s purpose we find significance as His children in knowing that God appreciates our work.
Listen and learn more about finding significance in service to God.

In the Lord's Service — Freedom and Duty?
Are we willingly engaged in the Lord's service? We are free to choose who we will serve, but we will serve someone or something. We have many examples of compelled service in scripture, as often the people of God lived under oppressive governments with laws that included forced labour. God on the other hand, gives us freedom to choose. He asks those who serve him to do so willingly, even joyfully. He wants his people to be conscientious and motivated by love to serve voluntarily and not out of compulsion.Learn more from the scriptures about a life of service to God.

Marriage — Safe Harbour and Eternity of Love
Marriage may have gone out of fashion in some circles, but living with reality instead of fantasy is important. And the reality is marriage was designed to be a 'safe harbour' from the vicissitudes of life. So is this your marriage? And if it is not, what can you do about it?
An important principle to understand is that your marriage is a covenant, and it should reflect the same kind of covenant loyalty that you have with God. God is interested in faithfulness, and marriage is a training ground for this essential quality of character. God wants to help us live up to his expectations for marriage and he provides wise counsel to help us love and respect our marital partner. So let's delve into God's word to understand his advice for marriage, so it will become our safe harbour in a world that devalues what God holds dear.

Pentecost — Ruth's Story of Loving Loyalty
The story of Ruth embodies vital truths relating to the Feast of Pentecost. It invites us to examine the relationship between God's covenants with the nation and with individuals. God's word provides the instructions we need to keep this holy time for all generations, so we can consider God's message for our time. The book of Ruth was traditionally read during this harvest festival and it reminded the people of their duty to care for the poor and the foreigner. The topic of gleaning as a way of providing charity for the needy was intimately tied to Pentecost/Feast of Firstfruits. But Ruth's personal story goes beyond these surface connections to embody the essence of God's nature and his purpose.
God, in his covenant relationships with his family, both national and individual, has always looked for 'chesed' — covenant loyalty, loving kindness. Ruth's story is set in the time of the judges, a time when many in Israel had strayed from God, forgetting their covenant, and had embraced the lifestyles of the pagan cultures in their midst. So her story was unique, one of a foreigner embracing both the cultural heritage of Israel and more importantly a personal relationship with the God of Israel. Learn more about the book of Ruth and its connection to our covenant calling of loving loyalty to God and neighbour.

Is Your Christianity Co-opted
There are some astonishing parallels between the challenges of the first century Christians and followers of Christ today. But we have the New Testament writers to thank for their warnings as they have given us wisdom to navigate the political and social turmoil of our time. In Paul's day in Judea there were four major factions all vying for political power and the church brethren were often in danger of being subverted by one group or another. Paul reminded them of the dangers of aligning with the world and the societies' struggles, while admonishing them to walk the straight path and pursue peace with all. Paul saw the divisiveness caused by those who brought party politics into the church and he appealed to the brethren to take up the responsibility of being Ambassadors for Christ. So are we heeding Paul's advice and avoiding the toxic attitudes and approaches of the social and political factions of our day?
