Trap Inspection Using a DJI Mini 3 Pro Drone
When new technology comes out, there's often a phase where people look for ways to leverage it in novel ways. That's pretty much what's happening in the case of drones, since it's a form of technology that has advanced and become more affordable recently. This video gives you a peek at how it worked out for us when we deployed one for checking our trapline using a DJI Mini 3 Pro.
Illegal in most places (not all) to use in connection with hunting, drones might have an application when it comes to trapping - although there are places (British Columbia for one) where even that is prohibited. Where we are, it's okay though, so this video passes along the results of our testing regarding that.
This video does not conclude testing however. Here we are simply looking at the drone's range and performance when it comes to flying low, traversing heavily wooded bush (spoiler alert: it really reduces the range).
When it comes to higher altitude flights (perhaps in search of beaver activity) the story is bound to be very different, so you might want to keep any eye out for that video when it comes.

Whatcha Been Doing Lately?
My answer when someone says, "Are you bored, now that you're retired?"
So long as you've had hobbies during your earning years, retirement is when you can finally pursue them to your heart's content. And it sure helps having a woman by your side who shares the same interests.

TV Interview Excerpt: Trudeau's Unconstitutional Gun Grab
Many Canadians stood aghast as Trudeau revealed his cowardly authoritarian predilections, freezing the bank accounts of those supporting groups he disagrees with. He is now freezing our rights to buy and sell (in the case of handguns) and confiscating rifles that were legally obtained - setting a precident for overriding the Common Law principles of prioperty rights that will have rolling impacts to all Canadians down the line if not opposed now.
All this done in order to gin up fear and divide the nation; turning one group against the other as he attempts to distract our attention from his corrupting of the justice system, the RCMP and his disasterous management of the economy.
But, if we continue to shed light on what he is doing, it's not going to work - no matter how much the government-funded mainstream media outlets try to keep him in power.
This video is a short excerpt from a longer interview I gave to "Bridge City News" out of Lethbridge Alberta. I encourage you to watch it in its entirety here: https://youtu.be/p0-l6FXTdRU

TV Interview: Trudeau's Handgun Freeze, Bill C-21, Trapping, Indigenous Issues
The topics of hunting, trapping and the dangers presented by Trudeau's Bill C-21 are not always covered fairly by mainstream media, but that cannot be said of "Bridge City News", a news outlet based out of Lethbridge Alberta. Their interest peaked by content found on this channel, they recently reached out to me for an interview, which I agreed to.
I would say the interview was conducted fairly and respectfully. It covered a wide range of important topics, including the impact and implications of Bill C-21 as it effects both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, the current state of affairs in the trapping industry, the history of Bill C-10 on intermarriage, western alienation and the steady erosion of property rights and other vital freedoms in Canada.
I think you will get a lot out of this interview. That is why I've decided to share it here (with the permission of Bridge City News). It's a little over 15 minutes and the original clip can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrf_Q53zIkc
I look forward to learning from and engaging with your comments after watching this interview.

Discovering An Abandoned Trapper's Cabin
Having a trapping cabin ourselves, it was a treat to come across this very old cabin and examine the workmanship. It is a piece of history so I would like to share it with you.
Anyone watching able to tell where this is? I'm keeping its location to myself, but I'm probably not the first one to encounter it. As a hint, it is in the Lodgepole region of Alberta, Canada.
This video concludes with some beautiful footage, flying low along the Pembina River, so hang in to the end!
The sequences in this video were recorded using a DJI Pocket 2 camera and a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone.

How To Land A Drone In Your Hand
This very brief video demonstrating how to land a drone in your hand. It is sometimes necessary to do this due to the ground surface being unsuitable.
Landing on a dusty or sandy surface, for instance, is not recommended because the propellers create a dust cloud and some particles can enter the electric motors powering the propellers, which will harm them. Landing on surfaces where the propellers could contact vegetation or other obstacles is also not recommended, as that may damage the propellers.
Some prefer to grab the body of the drone once it is in contact with the hand, but I find this risks getting your fingers clipped by the propellers.
Still others recommend that, after grabbing the drone, you flip it upside down (which causes the drone's propellers to shut down automatically). This is also not advisable since it puts unnecessary torque on the propellers and motors.

Drones! Useful On A Trapline?
A drone used on the trapline??? What kind of sorcery is this???
Well, it may not be as crazy as it seems. This video, taken on our trapline, will delve into the pros and cons of adopting this new, quite amazing technology because there are some interesting things you can take advantage of when using a drone; things you may never have thought of before.
Modern drones have so much built-in intelligence, they are not difficult to master and can accomplish some sophisticated tasks, such as flying pre-set routes (checking your trapline perhaps?) and scouting.
The drone recommended and used as an example in this video is a "DJI Mini 3 Pro." One place you can purchase this drone (I am not being paid for this) is at:
https://www.amazon.ca/DJI-Mini-Pro-Lightweight-Tri-Directional/dp/B09WDBDGBZ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=D9KIB82T06M2&keywords=mini+3+pro&qid=1665772543&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjI0IiwicXNhIjoiNC44NiIsInFzcCI6IjQuNzAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=%2Caps%2C99&sr=8-1

Walk the (Trap) Line
In this video Nikeeya and I invite you to take a stroll with us as we walk from our trapping cabin to a beautiful lake nearby, while providing news on projects in the works plus updates on what's coming up on the channel this fall.
When I ramble on about topics ranging from hunting and trapping to First Nations encounters with Sasquatch to meteor strikes and monster trees to environmental law and channel news, it's hard to write a correct description for a video like this. So I guess we will just let it speak for itself and trust that whoever is interested can make what they will of it as we enjoy the weather and beautiful, fall scenery on this remote trapline in northern Alberta, accompanied with some interesting drone footage.
For some drone recordings we did of the area during this trip, see the following:

Lake On Trapline, Northern Alberta; A Windless Fall Day At Sunset
We had the opportunity to take our first grandson and our first great-grandson to the trapline with us and stay at the cabin for a few days of hunting.
Although he had been there with me in the winter, our grandson hadn't yet seen the lake on our line. So, on the last day with the one-year-old packed on his back, we hiked over to give him a look.
The time of year and the time of day could not have been better. I'll always remember the look on his face as he stood on the shoreline taking this in for the first time. It's a really special place and he knows he could be taking it over someday.
As far as the drone-piloting goes, I'm getting there, but still have to work on smoothing-out my maneouvers, so I hope you'll bear with me.

Access To Remote Areas is Changing!
This video tracks the 2.5 km route we take back to the main road from our trapping cabin. Prior to that, over 100 kms of unmaintained road has to be driven.
The travel has been made easier a couple of years ago by a logging company building a temporary road in. This road is now slated for "reclaimation" this fall, so we wanted to make this record of its current state before it's gone.
The Alberta government has pursued an aggressive policy towards protecting the environment, so that means they want roads built into wild country to be removed once they are no longer needed for industry (even though trapping itself is an industry).
It appears the same thing is happening to seismic (cut) lines. Although certain protectionist groups may laud such efforts, I don't think it is pleasing the majority of people who actually need to get out into remote areas.
But, perhaps, that's a debate for another day. For us, today, it will mean more effort getting to the cabin and we're not getting any younger.

Making Full Use Of A Moose
Preparing a moose hide in the traditional, native way requires a lot of physical effort. Once it is treated with the animal's brain, the hardest work goes into the scraping, in order to get the thickness and softness right before it is smoked.

Entrepreneurs in Trucks - Intimacy On a Schedule?
Based on a mature couple's experience, this is the first in a series looking at how men and women can build successful relations with each other, quite different from advice spread by popular self-help channels - mostly from a "Now you got her, how do you keep her?" perspective.
In this episode we will look at the dilemna of husbands and wives having vastly different needs when it comes to frequency of intimacy and how best to deal with it.
The channel this series intentionally contrasts itself with is Rich Cooper's "Entrepreneurs In Cars" which can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/c/EntrepreneursInCars
Although the advice given here may differ, this series is not meant to disparage Rich or his channel in any way.

Dene Assembly 2022
This video provides a view into the Dene Cultural Assembly (what many think of as a pow-wow) that took place in Bushe (near High Level, Alberta) on August 26-28, 2022 after 3 years of shut-down due to restrictions. It was a joyous event, made interesting by the unique drum dancing and "hand games" played, which this video shows.
For more background on this event (including some explanation of how the hand game rules work), you are invited to view this portion of an extended version of this video: https://youtu.be/bWHWN14piQc?t=89

Trapline! The Musical.
This video expresses quite well how we I feel when on our trapline. There is something pure and almost magical about the place; so pristine that the lake water is safe to drink.
And peaceful - it gives you the time you need to think about life and your relationship to God and family.
For trapping, the area has an abundance of lynx and the other fur-bearing animals my wife uses for her native crafts, plus moose and deer for food.
Sometimes I wonder, if civilization came crashing to a sudden end, how long it would take for us to notice out there?

Once In the Country, You Won't Be Turning Around
Our son, our daughter-in-law and their precious family. They saved up for a place like this for a long time and can now finally be where they want to be, instead of cooped up in the city. Way better for the kids too, as you can see.

When You Don't Know What You're Doing! (Mini 3 Refuses to Come Home) (4k)
While getting used to flying a drone for use in this channel's videos, we ended up in a highly stressful situation as we attempted to record the beautiful, remote lake located within our trapline in northern Alberta.
Due to having it's target-tracking feature turned on, the drone would not let me return it to the narrow shoreline it had taken off from - placing us in quite a predicament for getting it back in a way that would not involve a force-landing on the water!
As it turned out, there would only be one, possible solution...
My wife tries, but has no idea what to do. The drone shown in this video is a "DJI Mini 3 Pro."
