Welcome to Chef Grace's Place. Grace is classically trained in French Pastry. She graduated Salutatorian of her class from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA with a Bachelors Degree in the Science of Pastry Arts. She then worked at many fine dining establishments honing her skills in Philadelphia and New York. After working in the industry for a number of years she realized she would never make enough money to open her own place (Grace's Place) working for someone else and she might as well find a job that was more fun. It got depressing creating someone else's dream everyday. She asked herself "How do I live like Anthony Bourdain (RIP), without needing a book or a tv show?" The answer she came up with, "flight attendant". After applying to many airlines she got a job with Norwegian Airlines and ate her way around the world. It paid less then she thought it would so, to earn money on the side she also started teaching pastry. My first season of Florida gardening is coming to an end. I harvested my surviving plants, but the white flies got to most of it. I also think their might be some sort of egg in the dirt I just bought but I'm hoping its fertilizer balls 🤞. Not bad for a patio garden! I made about 6 qts of pesto and made some epic fried rice with pepper, scallions, herbs, and green beans all from my garden! I learn a lot, too. For my #SpiceOnTheRocks2021 cocktail I'm using pineapple juice as my Sugar, Vietnamese Cinnamon as my Spice, and Tequila as my Everything Nice! Tequila is my personal favorite, but I think this flavor combination would also go great with whiskey, maybe with lemon instead of lime. The mocktail version is also really good. Chef Note: If you make the simple syrup a few days before without straining it, the cinnamon flavor will have more time to infuse. I highly recommend using whole cinnamon sticks for this if you can find them. To plant a Garden is to Believe in a better Tomorrow. Reasons to Grow Something: Food Security- As someone who has lost their income this year, I've had to cook a lot more. So even if you are new to cooking and gardening you will see you can save the most money growing fresh herbs, and they're some of the easiest plants to grow. Knowledge- You don't have to wait until you have a house with a backyard. Learning is all about getting in there and messing up. I learned so much about organic pest control, watering, pruning, cloning etc... just in a few storage containers. Knowledge is something I can take with me as I grow. Community- The pandemic has been hard on everyone. Being able to give a neighbor some basil or sage does more then just save them money on groceries. Beauty- Gardens are pretty; stop looking at your phone and plant a tomato. Gingerbread men with cute emoji faces?!?! Learn how to make gingerbread cookies start to finish. This gingerbread cookie dough recipe happens to be vegan, so to keep it vegan in our icing we will use water instead of egg whites. The gingerbread man will still be delicious, but if you use egg whites it will dry shiny instead of matte. Bake at 350F like pretty much all cookies until they look dry. I love building things out of gingerbread.
