Ilo Ferreira Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The Ilo Ferreira Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
What you’re about to hear is an audio artifact, recorded in Boston, Massachusetts for a radio broadcast in 2009. Paul E. Leslie was the first American radio guy to interview Ilo Ferreira, a singer-songwriter of immense talent. So, Ilo Ferreira is from a group of islands off of the coast of West Africa that form the nation of Cape Verde. Cape Verde has a strong Portuguese influence and a vibrant music scene.
It was in 2006 when singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and friends were in Cape Verde hoping to meet the legendary singer of Morna, Cesaria Evora. Joining him on this adventure was Chris Blackwell of Island Records who made Bob Marley world famous, Tom Freston of MTV renown and author and entertainment executive Bill Flanagan.
One night at a Cape Verde restaurant, Ilo Ferreira got on the small stage to sing and play his guitar. Buffett and his friends became enamored with the young singer, not just his voice, but also by his original songs. On
September 8, 2007 Jimmy Buffett welcomed Ilo Ferreira to perform as special guest at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. The thousands in attendance responded immediately to Ilo. They next year, Ilo began recording songs produced by Tony Brown and Mac McAnally.
These days Ilo Ferreira is still performing in the United States and elsewhere. He joined Paul to talk about his life and his debut EP entitled “Ilo” released on Mailboat Records.
This interview was recorded on June 26, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts – the city where Ilo was first heard by an American audience. You will hear Ilo Ferreira’s incredible story. Ilo proves great music transcends languages, nationalities and age.

So Scott Kirby, being the great fellow that he is accepted the offer. He brought with him ‘Country’ Dave Edminsten who accompanied on guitar. Are you here? Knowing you, you’re here. Welcome to The Paul Leslie Hour, supplier of broadcast interviews, as seen in The New York Times, Entertainment Tonight and HuffPost.
We have an interview Paul E. Leslie did in Key West, Florida with comedic musicians and entertainers Pete Jarvis and Wayne Hammond of the famed duo “Pete and Wayne.” They were wildly popular and played at the Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Key West for more than 22 years. Sadly, Wayne Hammond passed away in 2018.
This was recorded on the balcony of Sloppy Joe’s on Duval Street in Key West. The original sound quality was… well, it sounded like it was recorded on Duval Street! But, thanks to audio restoration, it sounds better than ever.
Make a beverage or cocktail and enjoy this one. I think there was some wisdom in these two comedians and musicians, Pete & Wayne. So, we hope you enjoy listening.
Keep in mind, Pete Jarvis is hitting the road this summer, with Larry Strickland. That act is called “Tipsy and the Donuts.” Be sure and tell them The Paul Leslie Hour sent you.

Michael McCloud Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? Of course you’re here! I’m here too, and Paul? I guess he’s here somewhere. He’s hiding.
We’ve got an interesting one for you on this episode, ladies and gentlemen. Paul has always been a little shy about getting it out there as you’ll soon hear why. The interviewee is Michael McCloud, a Key West original. He performs regularly at the Schooners Wharf Bar, and has for many years. He’s known for a very unique voice, creative songs and the stories he tells in between song performances.
This was recorded on location in Key West, Florida at the Schooner’s Wharf Bar in-between one of Michael McCloud’s live sets. And let’s just say Paul had…. well, he had been enjoying some cold beverages, which is what a lot of people do way down in the Keys. Maybe this was a few too many to have before an interview.
After a few drinks, Paul Leslie and his longtime friend Dèjá, like as in Deja Vu… sat down with Michael McCloud. There aren’t a lot of interviews with Michael McCloud out there, but Paul is glad he got a chance to do it with Deja. Hello, Deja! Little fact for you, this was the one and only time that Paul did a co-interview. It hasn’t happened since.
Michael McCloud writes some great songs… He can do clever and he does pensive. All great stuff. Some of his great songs include “I’ll Never Really Love You,” and “One Good Christian Man,” oh yeah and “Peace and Quiet.” He’s a great, great singer-songwriter.
He also does some great covers. You may hear him doing the Hoagy Carmichael classic “Scotch and Soda” or Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans,” or “Over the Rainbow.” Little fact for you: Paul Leslie’s very first radio broadcast ever, he closed that very first episode with Michael McCloud’s “Over the Rainbow.” It’s sublime. Check out Michael McCloud at michaelmccloud.com You’ll be very happy with yourself if you pick up a CD or two. Or three.

Mac McAnally Third Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The third Mac McAnally Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
Okay, good folks welcome to The Paul Leslie Hour, home of decent, quality interviews for more than 18 years. The special guest here is singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Mailboat Records recording artist Mac McAnally.
If you’ve been counting, like Paul does, this is Mac McAnally’s third interview on this show. Your host, Paul E. Leslie considers McAnally one of the greatest purveyors of semi-true stories.
Now, Mac is a man with Mississippi roots. And, you may remember another singer, Elvis Presley was born in the Magnolia State. So, this interview touches on somewhat disparate subjects. Like, Elvis Presley and his connections to Jimmy Buffett and that documentary JAZZ FEST: A New Orleans Story, now streaming online, that everyone is talking about. Paul won’t shut up about it. Plus some other odds and ends.
Mac McAnally has released 14 studio albums, but if you haven’t seen him live, it may make a lifelong impression on you. We’re saying so because Mac is far too humble to say it. He’s got some solo shows throughout the year. Catch him if you can, and he’s also performing with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band throughout the year.
Just be sure and wave at Mac when Jimmy introduces him on the stage. And Mac will wave back, he always does. Well, there is a show Jimmy Buffett and the band will be doing in Antartica this December. If Mac doesn’t wave back, he’s probably just cold.
As always, you can support the Paul Leslie Hour by listening in just like you are. Yet another way, is by going to thepaulleslie.com/support and you’ll know what to do when you’re there.

She has a lot of the Gulf Coast and Louisiana influence in her work. Whether she’s performing her own songs or someone else wrote, it’s distinctly Marcia Ball. People who love real music love her material and have for years.

The Maurice Williams Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
We’ve got a great interview that was originally conducted for the radio with the one and only Maurice Williams. Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, he’s the lead singer of Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs.
Paul met Maurice Williams in Savannah, Georgia years ago. It was a chance encounter and it lead to this interview. Maurice Williams is a great songwriter and wrote such classics as “Stay” and “Little Darlin’” The song “Stay” at 1 minute, 36 seconds is the shortest song ever to reach #1 on the Billboat Hot 100 chart in the United States. Did you know that?
Now, “Stay” is a song that has had a lot of action through the years. It’s been recorded by the Hollies, Jackson Browne, the Four Seasons. Of course it was in that movie “Dirty Dancing.” And “Little Darlin’” was covered by The Diamonds, The Monkees, and it appeared on the final Elvis Presley album.
