Are you here? Okay, I was being facetious. I know you’ve been here before I even showed up. I won’t keep you waiting any longer.
So, yes, welcome to The Paul Leslie Hour, now in our 19th year. On this episode we’ve got an interview from the archives with performing and recording artist Champian Fulton. Champian is one of the most respected jazz pianists and vocalists on the scene.
Nate Chinen of The New York Times described Fulton as… “A charming young steward of the mainstream jazz tradition.”
Then there’s this: Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press commented: “Champian is the most gifted, pure jazz singer of her generation.”
These are some great acknowledgements, am I right? Okay, now let’s acknowledge that you can visit Champian Fulton’s website at champian.net and that’s spelled c-h-a-m-p-i-a-n. You got that?
While I’m giving out web addresses like it’s candy, I’ll just remark that The Paul Leslie Hour needs two things. Listeners and oh yeah, supporters. Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support and we thank you.

You should know, The Paul Leslie Hour is an interview program now in our 19th year. That’s a pretty okay length of time. We’ve got some great content, some of it was heard on the radio and other places and after that never to be heard again. Such is this interview you’re about to hear, with Carmen Lundy, she’s the real deal.
Now, Carmen Lundy is a vocalist, songwriter and recording artist in the musical genre of jazz. Paul E. Leslie interviewed her around the time of Lundy’s 15th album “Code Noir.” It’s a record that includes Jazz, Blues, Pop and Brazilian Samba along with the full range of human emotions.
The title of Carmen Lundy’s album “Code Noir” actually refers to the first law ever written by a person in power of an empire, the King of France, Louis XIV, but there will be more about that in the interview.
Now, it’s something you may know already, but it’s worth reminding you. The Paul Leslie Hour a show with a mission statement of helping people tell their stories, is dependent on people, too. Ever notice that a kaleidoscope of images surround us daily, still and in living motion? It is the artist who sees the miracles in both the great and seemingly ordinary things. On this episode you will encounter Amanda Erlinger, an artist and photographer. Amanda Erlinger is a native of Los Angeleno. Amanda gives thanks to her grandfather for teaching her certain artist’s techniques and concepts. Amanda Erlinger’s grandfather was someone known to the whole world. His name? Frank Sinatra.
The late Frank Sinatra, was not only a vocalist, recording artist and actor, but also a painter. Amanda Erlinger compiled a book of photographs, working with Robin Morgan. The Adrienne Anderson Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
Are you here? Please. Won’t you be here. We need and love it when you are here listening to The Paul Leslie Hour.
So, your host Paul Leslie had the good fortune to see Barry Manilow and his band of talented musicians performing in Savannah, Georgia on January 15th. That’s a big reason why we’re playing this interview from the archives with the incomparable Adrienne Anderson.
Adrienne Anderson is the very talented lyricist who was introduced to us by lyricist Marty Panzer. She is most known for the songs she co-wrote with composer Barry Manilow. You know, some of the most beloved songs recorded and performed by Barry Manilow feature the lyrics of Adrienne Anderson, including “Daybreak” and “Could It Be Magic,” and many more.
Songs Adrienne Anderson wrote have been recorded by many great artists including Melissa Manchester, Bette Midler, Donna Summer and Isaac Hayes. Interesting tidbit: The late great Frank Sinatra sang a televised performance of the song “See the Show Again” on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Fans of Dionne Warwick may be familiar with Anderson’s work from the song “Deja Vu” which she co-wrote with Isaac Hayes. With Peter Allen, Adrienne Anderson co-wrote “I Go to Rio” which became a signature song for Allen. The song was later covered by the band Pablo Cruise as well as Peggy Lee.

Woody Allen Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Woody Allen is an international icon: a film director, writer, actor, comedian and playwright. Most known for his motion pictures, including such classic films as Annie Hall, Sleeper and Manhattan, this interview focuses on his love of music. Woody Allen is one of the most celebrated personalities in film, but many have noted the the incredible use of music in his films. The soundtracks have all been memorable. This stems from his lifelong love of music. He is a clarinet player and in this interview we talk about his passion for the authentic, traditional jazz of New Orleans.
Allen performed with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band many Monday evenings at the Café Carlyle at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan on 35 East 76th Street, New York. Although Eddy Davis has passed away, Woody Allen continues to perform music.
This interview was recorded back in 2008. The original recording had a very poor sound quality. Audio restoration was completed greatly improving the clarity. Additional audio engineering and mastering courtesy of Kevin Hooper has resulted in an interview that is quite listenable. It is presented as a historical record and for your listening enjoyment on this episode of The Paul Leslie Hour.

A question for you. “What’s in a name?”
It was the name “Konigsberg” that lead filmmaker Masha Vasyukova to make the documentary short “Woody Before Allen,” an adventurous meditation on past and present, on two former Konigsbergs. One is a Russian city formerly named “Konigsberg” which was changed to “Kaliningrad.”
The other a famous film director named Allan Konigsberg who changed his name to Woody Allen.
So the interview on this episode of The Paul Leslie Hour is with documentary filmmaker Masha Vasyukova, and she is a native of the city of Kaliningrad.
She made it her mission to commemorate the bizarre connection between those two former Konigsbergs (the city and the director) by helping put up a statue in Kaliningrad in honor of Woody Allen. You’ll be hearing her tell us more about the story that is told in her documentary film “Woody Before Allen.”
Now, ladies and gentlemen before we play this interview from the archives, we’d like to report some news about Woody Allen, and some celebration is in order. It was reported in the news that Woody Allen, the great American filmmaker was retiring.
Now, Woody is currently in Paris, France filming his 50th film “Wasp 22.” And we want to let everyone know — hey guys. Woody Allen has clarified…. He’s NOT retiring. Woody remains one of his favorite guests on this show. So Woody Allen fans, rejoice! Go ahead order that piece of cake.
And now let’s take you to Paul E. Leslie’s interview with a very talented artist and a creative thinker, Miss Masha Vasyukova. Enjoy the interview!
