David Martin Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
Are you here? Okay! Everyone’s here. It’s The Paul Leslie Hour and you’re welcome here.
This is an interview from the archives with songwriter David Martin, known for being a part of the songwriting group of Arnold, Martin & Morrow.
Now… David Martin lives and breathes the songs. Chances are, you’ve heard something David Martin wrote. His songs have sold over 26 million records around the world, but all stories have a beginning. For the British singer-songwriter, he began his career as a member of the group Butterscotch on RCA Records.
Soon after, he formed a songwriting partnership with Chris Arnold and Geoff Morrow. The partnership resulted in many the composition of many songs recorded by the true legends of recorded music, including Cliff Richard, Wayne Newton, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, and Mama Cass. The legendary Elvis Presley recorded four of their songs: “Let’s Be Friends,” “A Little Bit of Green,” “Sweet Angeline” and “This is the Story.”
Quick side note, how many of you are planning on seeing the new movie simply entitled “ELVIS” releasing on June 24th? We can’t wait…
Now, one of the songs David Martin wrote has brought many smiles to the world. David Martin’s song “Can’t Smile Without You” would become a pop standard and worldwide hit after being recorded by Barry Manilow. Manilow was not the first, nor the last artist to record the song. The Carpenters, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Gino Cunico and others would perform and record their own versions. The song has been performed countless times in concert, been featured in motion pictures. The song earned Martin three BMI awards for over 3 million airplays.
Although HE continues to write songs, he is still very much a singer. He has a great admiration for the great songwriters of the American Songbook, those lyricists and composers who wrote the standards: Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and Sammy Cahn. It is his love for these American classics that resulted in his album “Silky Smooth Moments.” Accompanied by the Terry Coffey Trio, David Martin sings standards like “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” and one written by David Martin himself.
It’s a beautiful gesture from David Martin. Although he has accomplished so much with his own songs, he pays tribute to the great songwriters who came before him. We invite you into the world and passion of David Martin, where songs with great messages never die. They endure.

The guest on this episode is, indeed, a great singer-songwriter. Jimmy Payne is the co-writer of the song “Woman, Woman,” a multi-million seller, among others. We all know “Woman, Woman” as made famous by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, but Jimmy Payne has also written songs recorded by Charley Pride, Glen Campbell, Tammy Wynette, Connie Smith, Bill Anderson, Ray Price, Jim Glaser, Donnie West, The Lettermen and many others.
As a recording artist in his own right, he has released six albums. As a performer, Jimmy Payne has performed at such renowned stages as the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, the Wembley Festival in England and the famed Grand Ole Opry and many places around the world.

Lyle Lovett’s 12th of June —The Album Review
People tell me, “You know, Lyle Lovett is my favorite.” It’s something I can certainly understand. He’s been a source of fascination for me since seeing him on the television as a kid. As Esquire magazine put it Lyle Lovett is a man whose enduring veneration comes down to “the three C’s: class, charisma, and consistency.” Anyone who has seen him and his world-class band of musicians live in concert can attest to these truths.
Last year I was able to fulfill a longtime wish to interview him on my show. He came on to promote a livestream concert he was doing with Willis Alan Ramsey. It was quite a week for me, welcoming Willis Alan Ramsey and Lyle Lovett back-to-back.

Recessional: The Death of Free Speech and the Cost of a Free Lunch, by David Mamet — The Book Review
I was intrigued by David Mamet’s book after hearing him in conversation on Joe Rogan’s famed or perhaps infamous podcast. Mamet lives in California and had traveled to Texas where The Joe Rogan Experience is recorded.
When Rogan pointed out what a strange place California has become, describing it as “almost unrecognizable,” Mamet responded: “Well, it would be recognizable to George Orwell.” This was the jumping off for Mamet’s 3 hour long conversation with Rogan. The more Mamet shared, the more curious I became about his new book.

“What is a Woman?” — The Documentary Review
To say “The Times They Are A-Changing” is as true now as it was 60 years ago. But the modern times are transitioning in ways that are hard to keep up with.
Case in point, a documentary released on June 1st, 2022 has generated mountains of controversy for daring to ask the elemental question— “What is a woman?” A film exploring this question wouldn’t have ruffled many feathers years ago, but we live in an era of forbidden questions.

Clarence "Frogman" Henry Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The original Clarence "Frogman" Henry Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
Now, there is an interview floating around out there of Paul Leslie interviewing rhythm & blues singer Clarence “Frogman” Henry, that was recorded in the Frogman’s home in New Orleans. But, there was an interview recorded over the telephone from before that. It went out on the radio in 2008, never to be heard again. Until now. We’re making it available.
Jimmy Buffett once sang “I cut my teeth on gumbo rock, Benny Spellman and Doctor John, Sweet Irma Thomas and Frogman Henry use to boogie woogie all night long.” It was a fitting tribute. Jimmy Buffett is just one of many singers influenced by Clarence “Frogman” Henry.
Frogman’s songs like "I Don't Know Why, But I Do," have been loved by young and old. With over SEVENTY years in show biz, his artistic name originates from the lyrics of million hit "Ain't Got no Home."
Frogman is one of the original performers of New Orleans Rhythm'n Blues. He is voted into Rockabilly, Westbank, Delta and Gulf Halls of Fame (and several more) including the prestigious Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
Clarence “Frogman” Henry has entertained our Presidents and toured with the greatest - from The Beatles to Tina Turner, Dr John, James Brown and Little Richard. Frogman appears at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year where he always makes new fans and friends.
Frogman Henry joins The Paul Leslie Hour to talk about his life in music, what makes New Orleans unique, his time touring with the Beatles, and his friendship with Jimmy Buffett.
Speaking of which, June 3rd, today is the national theatre premiere of the fun and fascinating documentary film Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story. Please go out and see it, you’ll be very glad you did. And please let Paul know what you think!

Sonny Landreth Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The Sonny Landreth Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
We’ve got something exceptional from the archives. This is an interview Paul did with one of the most exceptional musical artists he has ever encountered. It’s rare that someone is able to perform at such a high ability in so many ways: as an instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, live shows and on records. Paul has frequently named him as a favorite recording artist for the great sound he gets out of his chosen instrument and his unique vocal styling.
This is an interview with Sonny Landreth, the originally broadcast on the radio in 2008. It’s not been heard since the original airplay.
The special guest, Sonny Landreth is a master of the slide guitar who joined Paul to talk about his album “From the Reach.” Sonny Landreth is a solo artist, but has worked with greats like John Hiatt, Eric Clapton, and on the road he’s also been a frequent guest of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.
Sonny Landreth discussed his early influences, and recording with the great artists that appeared on From the Reach, people like Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Vince Gill, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Nadirah Shakoor and Jimmy Buffett. Now that’s, but one album in Sonny Landreth’s discography. All of his records are really great and worth checking out!

Willie Nelson Shares “A Beautiful Time” — The Album Review
Willie Nelson turned 89 years old, but we’re the ones who got the gift. He used the occasion to release a new record: “A Beautiful Time.” It’s astonishing for any recording artist to make 72 solo albums, but even more remarkable is the consistency of quality Nelson achieves. It’s without peer.
Back as producer is Willie’s friend and regular songwriting partner Buddy Cannon. The title of this record is fitting. Listening is a beautiful time from beginning to end. It’s one of the best Willie Nelson records of the last 10 years, which is saying a lot given his bountiful output.
“A Beautiful Time” finds Willie at his most pensive, but also full of his trademark witticisms. What always enthralls me about Willie Nelson’s records is how he marries his original songs with songs from other writers that resonate with him. The songs form a cohesive sojourn.
A Willie Nelson record is like life. It’s got some smiles, but there’s going to be some tears too. True to the title, the songs come back to one of Nelson’s favorite subjects: the nature of time. And yes, the inevitably of time slipping away.
I’d love to share with you some of the vantage points on “A Beautiful Time,” released on April 29, 2022 on Legacy Recordings. I hope you’re up for it.

Hey, folks! Thanks for tuning in and dropping in on… The Paul Leslie Hour. David Letterman and his company Worldwide Pants are household names. Dave has been in the news lately because his show on Netflix, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is debuting the fourth season on May 20, 2022.
Some years ago, Paul had a chance to speak with Rob Burnett of Worldwide Pants, Incorporated. Rob Burnett is a man who has worn a lot of hats, or as we say in this interview, has a lot of titles, but what you’ll find is a man who seems to really enjoy his work…whatever it may be. Many people know Rob Burnett as a producer or the President & CEO of Worldwide Pants, the company owned by enduring talk show host David Letterman.
In this talk, Rob talked with Paul about his project We Made This Movie. We Made This Movie is about five high school seniors who create what they believe will be a blockbuster movie. Perhaps they are overestimating their own importance, but they decide to film every single “behind-the-scenes” moment. This is where the real magic is, and we hope you not only take a moment to listen to Mr. Burnett talking about the film, but also will watch it for yourself!

Hugo Duarte Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The Hugo Duarte Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour
We have an interview from the archives with Hugo Duarte: a singer, songwriter and musician of great talent who has since passed away. This interview was recorded down in Key West, Florida at the Hog's Breath Saloon, and was originally broadcast several years ago. Hugo Duarte had just come out with his album “Don’t Be Fooled By the Hat.” Paul had hoped there would be another interview with Hugo sometime along with some in-studio performances, but that never materialized.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1955, Hugo resided in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he passed away in 2014. Although Hugo Duarte performed in many places, he was a regular on the Key West music scene, playing some of the most famed venues, both as a solo performer and with his musicians in The Full Sail Band.
Hugo Duarte was an exceptional storyteller, he was really one of the best. A lot of his songs were historical in nature. Hugo was a photographer, golfer and Civil War history buff, it’s hard even describing him succinctly. If you ever had the chance to see him live, you never forgot that.
This interview was somewhat brief, but it’s our sincere hope that it inspires you to find his albums. Here it is folks, a rare interview with Hugo Duarte.

So…some of the interviews Paul has done have been a bit unusual…this one is another of those things you never knew existed. The fans of Jimmy Buffett are sometimes called Parrotheads. No doubt some of you listening consider yourself to be one.
After hearing there was an Honors class at the University of North Carolina Wilmington called “Parrothead Studies,” Paul wrote the professors a letter asking about it and the entire class called him on the phone. He could hear them all in the background laughing. They invited him to visit.
They asked me questions during the class and afterwards Paul got to interview the professors Dan Johnson, PhD & Candy Ashton, PhD. About this unusual class. It was broadcast on the radio and Paul also wrote a short article about the experience, which was published in Jimmy Buffett’s official print periodical, The Coconut Telegraph.

Dylan’s last public performance in Atlanta was seven years ago when he played the Fox Theatre in 2015. He has performed in Atlanta more than 30 times through the years beginning in mid ‘60s.

Gene Mitchell Landshark Tasting on The Paul Leslie Hour
Gene Mitchell and Paul Leslie have a LandShark Lager Tasting on The Paul Leslie Hour.
Hey and welcome to an episode of The Paul Leslie Hour that’s a bit of an anomaly. Okay?
So, this segment was an idea Paul Leslie dreamed up with the smart folks at Margaritaville Brewing Company in Jacksonville, Florida, that’s the Sunshine State. Now, we should note that Margaritaville Brewing Company is a part of Anheuser-Busch out of St. Louis, Missouri. Ya know, Missouri—the Show-Me-State. Anyhow, this tidbit of trivia and two bucks may get you a cup of coffee, maybe a beer in a dive bar. Paul Leslie was the first person in the state of Georgia to drink a Landshark Lager, which is an island-style lager. It’s a beer that you can drink with a lime wedge…or without. We don’t like to tell people what to do.
At the time, you couldn’t even get Landshark Lager in Georgia. Well, there’s always a way around everything. The folks who make the beer sent it to Singer-Songwriter Gene Mitchell. Gene Mitchell is a great Florida-based artist in the world of island music. I mean, he’s like the best. He’s so talented and also has a tiki bar at his house. What a guy.
Anyhow, the brewers sent a couple of cases of Landshark Lager to Gene Mitchell who in turn sent one case up to Paul. They sampled the beer via telephone which was broadcast over the radio. It was an interstate beer-sampling, which you are about to listen to. Paul was told he was the first person in Georgia to drink one.
You know, we mentioned the 2 dollars. The Paul Leslie Hour could use your help, no matter what the amount we are kept going by you the listeners. Simply go here. We thank everyone who is contributing.
It was the other day, Jeff and Allison stopped by The Paul Leslie Hour world headquarters. The brought a bottle of something and a little lime wedge. You never know what will spark a memory, but know this… Paul’s heart was certainly warmed. Jeff and Allison are like that though, always thinking of the other guy.
So, here’s a piece of history for you, no matter how significant or insignificant.. I think it’s time to start the show!

St. Somewhere Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The St. Somewhere Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour
Some of you heard Paul’s interview with Matt Hall, a singer who got his fame with the band St. Somewhere. Paul was a great fan of the band, as most certainly many of you are.
Before St. Somewhere broke up and after Matt Hall and Aram Takvoryan departed, the band consisted of Quincy Yeates, Kevin Wiley, Trey Sansom and Dave Sansom. They were a great band under that incarnation also. Paul was pleased to interview them in-studio prior to one of their concerts. He was still learning the craft of interviewing and it was not easy and as Paul sometimes remarks, it’s still not easy to interview an entire band.
You know, The Paul Leslie Hour is basically a semi-public archive of tons of recorded interviews that we make available to you. It takes work and time, but thanks to you all - it keeps on chuggin’ along. You can help. Just go to http://www.thepaulleslie.com/support We thank everyone who is contributing.

Jim Morris Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour
The Jim Morris Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.
This is an interview from the archives with someone who won the hearts of so many people, who has since passed away.
Jim Morris was perhaps the most popular independent singer-songwriter and recording artist making island-inflected music. He was quite a songwriter and his albums are filled with some great stories.
To say he was a Jimmy Buffett clone is not at all accurate. Although influenced by Jimmy Buffett, Jim Morris was even more influenced by singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker and much of his songwriting was very lyrical. He was a storyteller first and foremost.
This interview Paul did with Jim Morris was recorded in an empty bar in Key West, Florida several years back. He told the story behind several of his popular songs and how he came to be the Jim Morris people traveled very far to see and hear. If this interview increases interest in his great work, our mission is accomplished.
