Last Great Forest In World Under Threat From Demand In Asia 2
Russian police have smashed a massive illegal logging operation led by an 'Asian' businessman who covertly harvested millions of pounds worth of timber from ancient forests in Siberia.
Police did not specify the final destination for the timber other than to say it was a "foreign economic contract to one of the states of East Asia".
However, logging bans in China’s forests have generated a vast demand for timber – both legal and illegal – from neighbouring countries. Police have identified sales of RUB 1.3 billion (GBP 14.6 million) so far from the gang arrested this week.
Around two-thirds of Russian timber exports are to China, where factories process it into furniture and flooring. The products are either exported around the globe or, increasingly, sold to the country’s soaring middle class.
Not just China but also other countries in the region like South Korea, have been implicated in receiving illegally harvested timber from the vast forests of the Russian Far East and Siberia, representing one of the last great forest wildernesses in the world.
These forests containing large expanses of boreal and northern temperate forest type are of global importance as a habitat for rare and endangered species, for the richness of biodiversity in areas such as the Sikhote-Alin Mountain Range and Sakhalin Island, and to help mitigate against the effects of global climate change.
However, despite the seeming vastness of the forests in the Russian Far East and Siberia, they are becoming increasingly fragmented, particularly in the accessible southern areas of Siberia and the Russian Far East and much of this fragmentation is a result of industrial forestry.
In the latest crackdown, employees of the East Siberian Region Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia confirmed the arrests saying that the gang purchased illegally harvested wood in the Irkutsk region.
They then set up a company that submitted deliberately false documents on the origin of goods to the customs authorities.
After that, sawn timber was sold under a foreign economic contract to one of the states of East Asia.
More than 200,000 cubic metres of wood were smuggled out of the Russian Federation, and the damage amounted to over RUB 1.3 billion.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Police General of the Russian Federation Vladimir Kolokoltsev, said in a statement obtained by Newsflash that eight people had so far been arrested and detained and search was going on for others involved in the massive fraud.
He said: "They are accused of committing 44 episodes of illegal activities related to forest smuggling, illegal creation of a legal entity, legalization of money obtained by criminal means."
He said that the criminal gangs started operating in 2017 when a 'citizen of one of the states of East Asia' together with an Irkutsk businessman, created a criminal organization which specialized in the illegal circulation of timber and its sale abroad.
He said: "They involved local residents and foreign citizens in illegal activities. The community had a clear hierarchy and structure, the roles of the participants were distributed.
"The head office was responsible for the documentation of activities. He was also responsible for financial transactions on transactions, obtaining phytosanitary documents, entering information into a specialized information system.
"In addition, the so-called production unit functioned as part of the community. His duties included organizing the acceptance, processing and storage of illegally harvested timber, the supply and departure of lorries.
"The reception points were equipped with various equipment: loaders, sawmills, cranes."
During the investigation, more than 130 witnesses were interrogated, more than 50 searches and seizures were carried out, a large number of documents and technical equipment were seized, more than 30 different examinations were appointed.
The property of the accused was seized for an amount exceeding RUB 70 million.

Russia Shows Troops Training For Combat With Modernised T-80BVM Tanks In Occupied Ukraine
These images reportedly show Russian troops training combat using modernised T-80BVM main battle tanks in occupied Ukraine.
The footage reportedly shows the upgraded T80BV tank in action as it races around the training grounds and opens fire on mock targets.
The images also show the tank crew operating the war machine inside the tank.
The images were obtained from the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday, 9th February, along with a statement claiming: "Servicemen of the motorised rifle unit of the Central Military District (CVO) at the training ground in the rear area of the special military operation are practising combat missions on modernised T-80BVM tanks.
"Gunners and tank commanders use modern, computerised fire control systems when firing at targets from 125-mm cannons and 7.62-mm anti-aircraft machine guns at a distance of up to four kilometres.
"New tanks make it possible to significantly expand the crew's ability to control the combat situation through a variety of cameras, sensors, special software and an installed thermal imager.
"Drivers hone the control of a combat vehicle in off-road conditions and difficult terrain."
We have not been able to independently verify the claims or the footage.
The T-80BVM main battle tank is an improved version of the T80BV tank. It was first revealed in 2017 and reportedly boasts improved armour, greater range and greater accuracy than its predecessor.
Its main drawbacks are said to be a high rate of fuel consumption and difficult maintenance. It is unclear how many of them Russia currently has in its arsenal.
Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February 2022 in what the Kremlin is still calling a "special military operation". Today marks the 351st day of the war.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between 24th February 2022 and 9th February 2023, Russia had lost about 135,010 personnel, 3,255 tanks, 6,468 armoured combat vehicles, 2,244 artillery units, 463 multiple launch rocket systems, 232 air defence systems, 295 warplanes, 285 helicopters, 1,967 drones, 796 cruise missiles, 18 warships, 5,121 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 211 units of special equipment.
Russia has claimed that its casualties have been much lower but provides infrequent updates on its latest figures.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Europe to provide his country with combat aircraft and long-range heavy weaponry as soon as possible during a visit to Paris.
Zelensky said as he arrived at the Elysee palace on Wednesday: “The sooner Ukraine gets long-range heavy weaponry, the sooner our pilots get planes, the sooner this Russian aggression will end and we can return to peace in Europe.”
Zelensky met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Olaf Scholz, urging them to be “game changers” and send modern combat planes.
Zelensky said Macron’s stance had changed regarding Ukraine and the war. The French President had initially tried to keep communication channels open with Russia in the early phase of the conflict.
But Zelensky said: “I think he [Macron] has changed.”
He added: “And he’s changed for real this time. After all, he opened the door to tank deliveries. He also supported Ukraine’s candidacy for the EU. I believe it was a real signal.
“We had a lot of conversations with France, Germany and other countries. I believe that trust is real today.”
Zelensky’s visit to Paris comes after he made an emotional speech to the UK’s Parliament early on Wednesday, saying: “I appeal to you and the world with simple and yet most important words: combat aircraft – for Ukraine! Wings – for freedom!”
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that “nothing was off the table”.
The UK has also pledged to train Ukrainian pilots on advanced NATO fighter jets, with Sunak saying that it will “ensure Ukraine can defend its skies well into the future”.

NO CHARGE: Apartment Block Filled With Smoke As Electric Bike Bursts Into Flames
This video gives pause for thought about the dangers of having electric vehicles inside the house even when not being charged.
This electric cycle caught fire after being left in the hallway of a property in the municipality of Denzlingen, near Freiburg, Germany.
The bike is a model of the type that has an electric motor inside in order to provide extra power to whoever is peddling, and in the middle of the night, had caught fire even though it was not on charge.
Freiburg police said in a statement obtained by Newsflash on 6th February: "Rescue workers were quickly on site, and the burning bike was quickly carried out of the house. The pedelec was a total write-off.
"The stairwell was filled with heavy smoke so that it had to be ventilated.
"But thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire brigade and the favourable fact that nothing flammable was within reach of the fire, the fire did not break out to any major extent.
"Nevertheless, one resident had to seek medical treatment on suspicion of smoke inhalation. It is not yet clear how the pedelec, which was not attached to a charger, started to burn.
"At the moment it looks as if signs of wear or a defect in the cable routing could have caused the fire to break out. Police investigations are continuing."

Footage of the rescue shows emergency workers in Hatay Province racing to free the woman from under a giant slab of concrete before it falls on top of them.
As the woman - wearing green, polka-dot pyjamas - is inched out of the wreckage, it becomes clear that she is wearing a neck brace.
Rescuers help her to her feet and she is able to take a few shaky steps.
Despite the race against time, her rescuers gently place her on a stretcher and carefully strap her in before she is taken to hospital for medical checks.
And as they work around her, she can be heard saying: "Thank you so much. I love you all."
At one point, she strokes the face of one of her rescuers as her tears well up at the relief of being safe.
Local media named her as Semra Et and said she was one of 32 saved by specialist search and rescue teams from Kocaeli.

The footage appears to show large swathes of the Russian front lines being hit by an impressive display of Ukrainian firepower.
The images also appear to show a Ukrainian drone dropping a bomb on a tank.
The images were obtained from the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Thursday, 9th February, along with a statement saying: "You can endlessly look at three things: how the fire burns, how the water flows and how the Zhytomyr paratroopers 'minus' the Russians.
"Soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the 95th Separate Assault Brigade shared a video of their work. The result is that a considerable amount of the occupier's manpower was destroyed, their equipment was destroyed, and the Ukrainian land will soon become even more fertile from a new portion of 'fertiliser'.

SHARP SHOOTERS: Man Who Rushed Out Of Home And Attacked Cops With Knives Is Shot
A man who armed himself with 2 knives at his parents’ was shot and injured when he advanced towards armed police officers.
A Volusia sheriff’s deputy shot at Michael Collmar, 43, as he emerged from the front door of the property. He was later transported to hospital.
The incident happened after a call early afternoon on Lakeshore Drive, in New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County, Florida.
The police said it was the second time they had turned up following a mid January incident in which his mother reported he was armed, screaming, paranoid and possibly hallucinating during an apparent mental health episode. He was not receptive to deputies’ attempts to communicate with him and connect him with counseling services.
Sunday’s call brought similar circumstances, and deputies again attempted to negotiate with Collmar with no success.
Eventually, after entering the house through a back door, deputies attempted using multiple Taser deployments and a less-lethal shotgun to subdue Collmar.
Despite these efforts, Collmar headed out the front door where more deputies were stationed just outside the house.
As a result the deputy fired as Collmar charged toward the group. Collmar was shot and fell to the ground, where deputies then moved in to provide life-saving aid.
Collmar’s parents were not injured in the incident, and neither were any of the deputies involved.
Collmar was recently released from Florida prison in October 2022 after serving about 4 years for charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
His arrest, in that case, came after he stabbed a Port Orange man multiple times in July 2017. His Florida criminal history includes 31 felony charges with 17 convictions and 33 misdemeanour charges with 19 convictions.
Michael Collmar is charged with 4 counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, 2 counts of false imprisonment, and 1 count each of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.
He is also charged with violation of probation supervised release.

Buried Smoker Gets Cigarette To Satisfy Nicotine Craving Before He Is Pulled To Safety From Hole
This is the moment a Turkish smoker is given a cigarette to satisfy his nicotine addiction even before he calls out of the hole to the safety and distracted away by rescuers.
The rescue attempt of the man named Soner Tuğtekin was carried out in the Turkish city of Adıyaman after he was buried in the rubble when his apartment collapsed.
But the cigarette was getting in the way of trying to wrap his arms under the blanket in the stretcher, and one of the wrestlers can be heard saying: ""Uncle just drop that cigarette and lay on your back. I'll give you one once we're at the hospital."
But he appears to be completely unfazed and continues to attempt to smoke a cigarette, saying he'd rather have a cigarette and did not want to go to hospital, amazing rescuers.
Trapped underground he was apparently unable to smoke, and the first thing he did as you approach the surface was light up a cigarette.
As he is strapped to a stretcher in order to be taken to hospital, he still has a cigarette in his mouth as rescuers from the Turkish Engineering Battalion elements of the 3rd Army Command then picked him up and carried him to safety.

Incredible Rescue Of Criminal From Capsized Stolen Yacht Who Had Vandalised Goonies House
A man wanted by US police after he dumped a load of fish on the doorstep of a house featured in The Goonies was arrested after a coast guard rescue when a boat he had stolen capsised.
A video of the shocking incident shows US Coast Guard crews hovering over the boat as it is hit by a huge wave and turns over shortly before the rescue from the Columbia river.
The river is the largest North American river flowing into the Pacific Ocean and is known as “the graveyard of the Pacific” for its notoriously rough seas.
The rescusers later discovered the boat was an allegedly stolen P/C Sandpiper yacht belonging to a lawyer.
The aircrews of the US Coast Guard has been conducting a training mission at the mouth of the Columbia River when the boat got into difficulties.
They were able to reach him in only minutes after receiving a 'MAYDAY' broadcast from the stolen vessel.
Aircrews had him enter the water when rescue by boat was deemed to be too dangerous after the yacht overturned.
A swimmer was able to get Labonte and safely recover him out of the river.
Labonte was reportedly flown back to Coast Guard Base Astoria where he was treated by medics.
After the Coast Guard shared footage of the rescue, local police recognised the yacht to be a vessel that was previously reported stolen.
Although it took a while, police soon realised that the rescued man and boat thief, as well as the crook dumping dead fish in front of the 'Goonies' house were all Labonte.
He was then taken into custody on charges of theft, criminal mischief, endangering another person and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
The man who saved Labonte’s life reportedly said he has no regrets.

This footage detained draft dodgers after they were busted heading to the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains in minibuses.
The images were obtained from the State Border Service of Ukraine on Tuesday, 7th February, along with a statement saying: "Thirteen residents of the Chernivtsi and Kyiv regions, aged from 22 to 52, were taken to the border by means of transport.
"They planned to illegally cross the border with Romania on foot in the mountains.
"The equipment was discovered by operatives of the Chernivtsi border detachment together with the border unit of the 'Krasnoilsk' department.
"In particular, in the course of events in the border area of the Chernivtsi region, servicemen stopped Mercedes and Opel minibuses for inspection, which were moving in the direction of the border.
"As it was previously established, the car passengers planned to cross the border to the neighbouring country on foot in one of the mountainous areas of the Ukrainian Carpathians."
All offenders were taken to the border unit to be prosecuted under Article 204-1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure "Illegal crossing or attempted illegal crossing of the state border of Ukraine."

Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark have issued a joint statement saying that they will provide Ukraine with at least 100 refurbished Leopard 1 main battle tanks.
The defence ministers of the three countries said in the statement that sending Ukraine the refurbished, older tanks was “to support Ukraine in their endeavour to withstand Russian aggression” and that the war machines would be delivered to Ukraine “within the coming months”.
The Ministry of Defence of Germany has said that some Leopard 2 main battle tanks will be ready for Ukraine by the end of March.
The head of the German defence company Rheinmetall has also said that it plans to send 20 to 25 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine this year.

Ukraine’s top national security official, Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s national security and defence council, has said that he believes Kyiv will eventually be supplied with American F-16 fighter jets and that it was “only a matter of time”.
Danilov also suggested that Ukraine could strike Russia on its own territory, beyond occupied Ukraine.
The UK Ministry of Defence has said that Russia “lacks the munitions and manoeuvre units required for successful offensives”.
The UK MoD added: “Senior commanders likely make plans requiring undermanned, inexperienced units to achieve unrealistic objectives due to political and profession pressure.”
The Minister of Defence of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, has said that Western weaponry supplied to Kyiv is “dragging” NATO into the conflict, which could lead to an “unpredictable level of escalation”.

Ukraine’s military said on Tuesday that the previous 24 hours had been the most deadly in the war so far for Russian soldiers.
Ihor Klymenko has become the new Ukrainian Minister of Interior Affairs and Vasily Malyuk has become the new head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the country’s main intelligence and security agency, after their appointments were approved by the Ukraine’s Parliament.

Russia Says Its Su-25 Fighter Jets Fired Missiles At Camouflaged Ukrainian Positions
Russia has said that its Su-25 fighter jets have fired missiles at camouflaged Ukrainian positions and armoured vehicles, as these images purport to show.
The footage begins by showing one of the Russian aircraft being refuelled and resupplied with defensive measures before it can be seen taxiing on a runway at an undisclosed location.
Two of the aircraft can then be seen taking to the skies before they are seen flying low over snow-covered countryside.
One of the aircraft can then be seen firing missiles at unseen targets before coming in to land back at base.
The images were obtained from the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Wednesday, 8th February, along with a statement claiming: "The crews of the Su-25 attack aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces in the zone of the special military operation launched rocket air strikes on military facilities and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"Missile launches were carried out in pairs from low altitudes.
"After the use of aviation weapons, the crews performed a manoeuvre, releasing heat traps and returned to the departure airfield.
"As a result of combat use, camouflaged fortified field positions and armoured vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were destroyed.
"After the sorties, the engineering and technical staff completed the tasks of servicing aircraft and preparing aviation equipment for a second combat sortie."
We have not been able to independently verify the claims or the footage.

These images show Ukrainian troops destroying a Russian tank after battering it with mortar fire, tank fire and Javelin missiles.
The footage shows the Russian tank advancing along a snow-covered road before it is apparently repeatedly hit by Ukrainian ordnance.
The images were obtained from the Separate Brigade of Territorial Defence of the city of Dnipro of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Tuesday, 7th February, along with a statement saying: "The last seconds of an enemy tank!
"This Russian tank refused to shoot at our positions, but instead became the object of hunting by several units: our mortars, neighbouring tankmen and, finally, the masters of the holy Javelina joined. The tank has been turned into a pile of scrap metal!"

Woman Turned Gun Cops On Grandson Because She Didn't Recognise Car
A 24-year-old man was gunned down by police as he slept in a parked car outside his grandmother's house after she had reported a mysterious stranger.
Victim Anthony Maclin had been fast asleep in the car in Indianapolis, Indiana State, USA when his gran called police.
She had not recognised the vehicle as her grandson's, as it was a rental vehicle registered in Florida.
Officers surrounded the still-running vehicle and spotted a Glock 9mm handgun on Maclin's lap.
But when they woke him by banging on the front passenger window, claim police, he reached for the gun and was shot at point-blank range by the officers.
Bodycam footage of the shooting on 31st December shows how police fired off more than 30 rounds at Maclin.
It is impossible to prove from the footage, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) admits, whether he was reaching for the gun or not.
During the chilling footage, one officer is heard saying: "All right, let's wake him up... If he draws on that gun or does anything, yell."
Astonishingly, he survived the shooting and even obeyed police orders to get out of the car.
One officer is heard shouting: "Get on the f*cking ground."
Police are seen rolling the critically-injured man on his face while they snap handcuffs on his wrists.
An IMPD statement says: "He was detained, and IMPD officers then provided medical aid until paramedics arrived."
As officers try to stem the flow of blood from Maclin's wounds in the video, one is heard saying: "F*cking sh*t."
It was only when the young man was outside the vehicle on the ground that Maclin's horrified gran realised she had turned the police on her own grandson.
She said: "I'm so sorry, baby".
She also asked why he did not come in the house, and he told her he had not wanted to wake anyone up.
Maclin's lawyer has since said his client has undergone six operations in just 17 days and will be unable to work for at least three months.
Maclin said on 6th February: "I am in a lot of pain. I mean a lot of pain. It's hard to sleep. It's hard to eat certain foods. My breathing is bad.
"Hopefully, I will recover and have a good recovery. I am just not sure how things will be."
His grandmother said: "I never would have expected anything like that. The gunshots, it was just so many, so many."
Attorney Stephen Wagner said of the police footage in a statement on 7th February: "You never hear an officer yell, 'Drop the gun!'
"When Anthony turns toward the officers and appears to raise his right arm slightly - when one officer was commanding him to raise his hands - you do not see a gun in his right hand."
He added that the officers "needlessly and recklessly shot a man who was doing nothing wrong".
