Doing this section of the walkway took about 45 minutes, including cleanup. The Yardmax Mixer handled the High Strength concrete a lot better than the Fast Set mix I used last time. This may work well for different kinds of feed, but for standard chicken pellets or crumble, its a fail. Crumble, as expected, is just too fine to work well in a spring system, so I tried Pellets. The spring seems to release more pellets from the top than the bottom, and after two weeks there was about 2 inches of hard moldy pellet clump at the bottom of the spring. My chickens are now back to only using their Amazon Bucket Feeder which works much better. So, more lessons learned, and more crops going straight to the chickens. When I was digging these up, I noticed we had about 1 or 2 inches of nice soil on top of hard thick South Carolina clay. They didn't really have a chance. I spent a few hours adding soil conditioner, 10-10-10, and turning the soil over on this bed and the potato bed after taking these videos. Looking into possible deep compost methods to use over the winter to try and improve what we have to work with here. Hopefully in the spring we will be in a lot better shape when we plant Garden #2. Much less than we hoped for when we planted our first garden this spring, but I think we know what the failures were. 1. Preparation was lacking. We went from 'we should plant a garden' to making our first garden in a very short time. The clay soil was not tilled deep enough and mixed with enough compost, fertilizer or legitimate soil. As a result only the top foot or so was usable and then it was hard clay beneath. 2. Neglect. During this summer, we simply didn't do enough to keep the soil moist and fertile. No excuses here. We need to schedule at least an hour a day for garden maintenance in the future. 3. Lack of experience. I'm in my mid 50s, everything I know about gardening I pretty much learned from YouTube videos. This is not enough. Like most men, I learn by failing, so I'll consider this summer a Lesson and hopefully learn from my mistakes and have a more successful harvest next year. There is a definite learning curve for the chickens, but after two hours, and stealing their normal feeder from them, and slapping it for them several times, they have finally figured it out. So why did I buy this thing when the chickens were doing fine with the Amazon Bucket Feeder? Currently we cap the feeder every night to prevent insects or mice from getting in there. I'd like to get an automated door so we don't have to wake up at 6:45 am to let the chickens out, and I didn't see the point of getting an auto door if I have to go out and uncap the feeder in the morning anyways, so I started looking for a mouse proof feeder design. This design should keep mice and insects out and let the chickens start eating as soon as their door opens up in the morning. This feeder cost about $15 (not counting the bucket) and is apparently only made by one company in the UK. Chickens currently have the option of their old feeder or the new contraption. As of 1pm, chickens are still trying to figure this thing out. No pecks on the spring yet seen. At my 3pm lunch break, noticed one hen pecking at the spring, but they still are going for the easier feed in the old feeders.

Been thinking about setting up a watering system for the chickens so I took a shot on a cheap plastic 55 Gallon Drum on Craigslist. It looked clean, and didn't have any odor when I checked it out, but as soon as I started adding water to flush it out, it started to suds up and turn into a gray colored slurry. After letting it flush out for a good while, the water was still slick to the touch, so basically I paid $10 for a new trashcan. No big loss and a low cost lesson learned.
