Here's a buncha things to think about as you begin getting your online business set up. Now maybe you've worked out a few of these things already, but I'll betcha there's a few things that might be new for you.
So most importantly, you're gonna need something to sell, right? You'll need products or services that promise to (and deliver on) solving problems that your target audience struggles with. So, what will you sell? Will there be variations or different options available, and so on?
Next, what pages will you need to include on your online business website? A Home page, About page, and Contact page go without saying, right? But what other pages will you need to include on your website? The pages you'll need often depend on the kind of online business you'll be running.
For instance, you might need FAQ pages, pages for specific offers, a login area for your membership site...this sort of thing. So, figure out what pages you'd like to include on your online business website.
The next thing you'll need to do is sort out some of the techie aspects of your website...like registering your domain name, setting up your web hosting, and getting your business email sorted out. Now don't let this stuff stop you.
The good news here is, this stuff really isn't that hard or technical. Check the Show Notes below where I've left you some links to helpful resources.
You'll also need to decide how you want your website to look. So, what sort of layout do you want? What colours, images, and other content would you like to include? And in here, let's also include specific website behaviour that you'd like...like image carousels, video content, and so on.

how to sell more online business
If you're like most people, then when you think of "sales" or "salesperson," you probably associate words like "greasy," "sleazy," "manipulation," "used car salesman," and so on.
That's because we've experienced this kind of sales first-hand...maybe when buying our first car, or getting approached randomly on the street, or at our front door or with a telephone call that interrupts dinner.
But at the same time, as an online business owner and marketer, you know that sales are critically important, right? And so it's sorta like feeling stuck...you know how vitally important sales are for your business...
...but on the other hand you don't want to be that high-pressure dirt-ball like the guy who tried to get you to buy new aluminum siding. So how do we rectify all this? Well, I have some great news:
First, everything we've discussed here -- sleazy sales strategies, high pressure tactics, heavy-handed closing and all this stuff...everything you might be thinking sales is...isn't selling. All this stuff is more like, "what amateurs think selling is." But this isn't selling at all.
Second, the internet has changed everything. It's exposed, or is in the process of exposing, fraud, manipulation, and all sorts of methods and tactics that used to work. The internet is shining the light of truth in all sorts of different ways.
Manipulators and frauds are being outed. In fact, often they're outing themselves! It's not just that consumers are getting smarter -- and they're DEFINITELY educating themselves A LOT more -- they're also seeing first hand the truth about things coming to light.
So all this manipulation and heavy handed garbage no longer works and it's a losing strategy going forward. Really, the "new" form of "selling" is really an older, much more traditional form of "sales"...if you can even call it that.
Imagine a time before the internet...even before mass media and television. Where did you go to buy your groceries, your baked goods? Where would you go to get advice about your taxes? You'd go to local shops and businesses...who were people you trusted.
And it was in their best interests to genuinely help you, guide you, and serve you...because otherwise, word would spread fast and they'd be out of business. And this is exactly where things are heading...we're headed back to small town USA...but with high speed internet connections.
But what does any of this have to do with increasing sales in your online business? Everything, actually. Think of your business and your website as a small corner shop in small town USA. If you genuinely care for your customers, if you guide them, help them, and serve them...then word spreads.
There's no "selling" in the mass-market, heavy handed way that we might think. So online, we need to redefine what we think "selling" is...and take it back to it's original meaning.

what is most important in sales
A key component to increasing sales in your online business and helping and servicing your target audience can be summarized in a single word: Empathy. And empathy begins with two things: Being an honest, genuine, caring business owner -- which I know you are -- and with in-depth market research.
Here, you really need to find out what your audience needs, what they struggle with, what bothers them, what feels complex and overwhelming for them.
When you learn more about them and where they're coming from and what has them stuck, you can begin to empathize with them because maybe you know what it feels like to be there too...and you can begin offering them products, services, and solutions that can genuinely help them.
And once you begin communicating to them...perhaps through your marketing, your messaging, or even face-to=face, sometimes you have to teach them a bit and provide some insights.
For example, something like, "not only is this a painful, complex problem you have...but did you realize that it could be costing you here, here, and over here too?"
"Sales" isn't hammering them into submission or bashing them over the head with heavy-handed tactics. I think of "sales" as "teaching," "guiding," and "helping."
Because after all, as business owners and marketers, that's the best thing we can do -- have empathy, to enter their world and understand where they are and what challenges they face, to recognize and validate their concerns, then then guide them towards solutions.
After all, when the roles are reversed and you and I are struggling with a difficult, complex problem, isn't that what we want? We want someone's help. We want someone we can trust. And anyone who comes along with any sort of gimmicky sales strategy immediately repels us.

importance of communication in marketing
If you're in business, then you don't have the choice to NOT deal with people. Online, of course, we aren't dealing with people face-to-face...but the relationships and how people FEEL about you and your online business matter very much.
One key thing to recognize when you're dealing with people is that, whether you're aware of it or not, you're sending signals to them. In other words, you're communicating and sending messages to them both verbally and non-verbally.
And so in business, what you want to do is be as aware as you can be about the messages you're communicating. In fact, you could call this "influence" because your verbal and non-verbal communication is leaving an impression...it's making an imprint on them.
I'll give you a perfect, real-time example: Right now, in this video, I'm communicating and sending messages to you both verbally in the words and phrases I use and in the way I talk and the tonality that I use...and also non-verbally -- my mannerisms, my body language...
...even my clothes and the environment I'm in. All of this is influencing you and making an impression with you, either positively or negatively...you're sitting there listening going...
..."Do I Like this guy? Can I trust what he's saying? How can I use what he's saying in my online business?"...and so on. And your customers, your target audience, is doing exactly the same thing when they land on your web pages, see your offers, or read your articles.
So it's important to understand how we're coming across to our viewers...and to be as conscious about it all as we can be...because there's only positive persuasion that draws people closer to you...or negative persuasion that repels people.
Here's a great way to positively influence and leave a positive impression with someone who you'd like to serve in your online business: If you tell them something outright, they'll likely question it and doubt it -- you know, something like...
..."We're #1 for used tires!" or "Our product has saved our customers over $10,000 per year." We instantly doubt and question these sorts of statements, right? "Really, you're #1? Cuz the guy down the street says the same thing!" And so these sorts of bold, direct statements are actually negative persuasion.
Instead, what if you did your homework and found out the exact things your target audience struggles with? What if you uncovered some of their biggest, hairiest problems? What if they have a painful tax problem...or are struggling to lose those last few pounds...or just can't seem to grow their business?
Then, if you truly cared for them, if you genuinely wanted to serve and help them, you could send them messages and tell them what they're already thinking and wrestling with...
"Tax headaches are such a hassle!" or "Lose those remaining pesky pounds with this secret trick" or "A simple strategy to kickstart your business growth!" Here, you're telling them things they already know and want...and that's powerful and very positive persuasion. It acts like a magnet.

customers don't buy products they buy
People don't buy products or services. REPEAT: People do NOT buy products or services. What do people buy then? People buy solutions to problems. See, to online business owners like you and I, we think we're selling products and services.
But from the customer's perspective, they don't want to buy those things. They aren't interested in t-shirts, music, online courses, or whatever it is we're selling. They don't want those things. This is why we can't say, "Hey, wanna buy my online course?"
Instead, they're actively looking for solutions to their painful problems...problems that our products and services can help solve.
So if you are struggling to make sales, it could very well be because you're trying to sell solutions (remember, in the eyes of your market that's what your products and services are)...you're trying to sell solutions to problems that don't exist.
It's like this: What if I told you that I could help you increase sales in your online business by following just a few clear, simple steps...are you interested?
Would you care necessarily what format all this came in -- a book, an online course, or via a Zoom call? The actual product or service (a book, a live online course, or whatever) is secondary.
If you perked up with some interest when I mentioned being able to help you increase your sales, it was the SOLUTION to your painful problem that got your attention, not the actual form (that is, the product or service) that the solution came in.

Promoting your online business and building an audience around you, your products and services, and the work you do is one of the biggest challenges you'll face. I'll tell you directly, there are no shortcuts and no quick, easy fixes...and anyone who's telling you there is...
...well, let's just say grab your wallet and run! Really, all that's involved is a few simple, straightforward steps that you engage in over and over and over again over a prolonged period of time. Now all this said, it's important to get clear on a few things.
Let's make a few distinctions here. First, let's nail down marketing. What is marketing? Well, marketing is the intentional effort on your part as an online business owner to actively tell your target market -- the specific group of people you wish to serve -- about your online business, your products, and your services.
Now what's great here is that nearly all of your marketing efforts can be automated. Done right, your marketing can run itself, and functions as an army of 100 top salesmen would. Really, I suppose you could say that marketing done right is sales multiplied. Or, you could say that marketing is macro-selling.
So what about selling? Well first, this isn't the sleazy, slimy dirtbag kinda stuff that you're probably thinking about...you know, used car salesman, door-to-door, heavy-handed, hard-closing sales tactics kinda stuff. That's all an example of ONE thing:
Bad sales! Instead, what if you saw "sales" as teaching, informing, guiding...and then ultimately letting your potential customer make up their own mind? So in other words, sales could be thought of a sort of...
..."Hey, this is a big problem you have. And it's costing you in this way and in this way. Yet there's a solution that will give you benefit, benefit, and benefit. Here's how you can find out more if you think it's a good fit."
No pressure. No hard sell. No hard closes. So here, you could think of sales as micro-marketing.

how to create a sales funnel
As you continue building your online business and developing your marketing and sales messaging, you'll quickly discover that the sorts of people you attract to your online business and the work that you do fall into three broad categories.
First, you'll discover that the vast majority of online traffic and visitors to your website and to your offers will be "cold traffic." That is, people who've found you...but who 10 minutes prior had no idea who you were.
So really, they don't know much at all about you, your products and services, or what makes you different, credible, and trustworthy. Further, at this point they may only be aware that they have a difficult or painful problem...but they haven't yet begun actively searching for answers yet.
And so at this stage, it's really great to expose them to helpful articles, videos, and other free content that you've put together. Very often, this is how the sorts of people you seek to serve will initially find you online, too.
This is a great opportunity to not only provide value to your audience, but also to establish your expertise and build trust, too. Next, as people get to know you, keep finding your helpful content online, and as you continually build trust and likability, a segment of your cold traffic will warm up to you.
Here, they'll opt-in for your email list, sign up for your newsletter, take you up on an offer for a free quote or a free downloadable report or other helpful material. At this stage, not only do they know they have a problem...but they're also actively seeking out solutions...
...and they're keenly aware that the work you do and the products and services you're offering just might help them get the results they want. People who know who you are, who've consumed your free content start to get VERY warm.
They've begun recognizing you as an authority and someone they trust and someone who can help guide them and help solve the challenging problems they face. And so a segment of people who are warm become very hot once they decide to buy from you.
Your "hot" traffic knows you, likes you, they know all about your products and the value they provide. They know all about the benefits they'll get and so they take that last final step and enter into a voluntary transaction with you -- they exchange their money for your solution.
And as you might guess, hot traffic is the best kind of traffic. These are the exact people you want to serve and work with day in and day out. And as you might guess, they're the most valuable kind of traffic you can have in your online business.

SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) might sound kinda similar...and sometimes they're used interchangeably...but as a matter of fact, SEO and SEM are two totally different things.
So here's the difference between SEO and SEM: You could say that SEO is a strategy to rank web pages, articles, product pages, and other web content highly in search engines.
In other words, when someone searches for something online, we can purposefully and strategically construct our web pages in a very specific way to increase the likelihood that our pages will appear on search engine results pages.
And ideally, we want to rank our web pages in the top 10 search results...or even better, the top 5 results, for the sorts of words and phrases our target audience uses when they're searching online. And this can be discovered through careful keyword research.
So really, SEO is simply a set of guidelines to follow to increase the probability that your content will rank well. Next, we have SEM. This is a much broader term than SEO that actually includes SEO or search engine ranking.
But it also includes other marketing activities that relate to search engines...most notably, paid ads in search engines, PPC campaigns, promoted links, and similar strategies.
More simply stated, SEM is SEO + paid advertising. SEO is just, well, SEO! So that's the difference between SEO and SEM.

Although search engines are very secretive about their algorithms, SEO experts have spent a lot of time and effort painstakingly testing and experimenting to see what works and what doesn't.
And it's because of this painful trial and error over a long period of time that we've gained and understanding of how Google and other search engines rank pages.
That said, Google does give us some information about what we need to do to successfully rank our web pages, articles, and other web content well. Here's some critical SEO info directly from Google -- directly from the horse's mouth:
First, it's strongly recommended to create a highly useful, helpful, and valuable website that's filled with great content. And on your web pages, blog posts, and articles, make sure to use title tags and alt tags. And, make sure they're useful and descriptive.
Further, use clean, easily read URLs for pages, and be sure to include descriptive and applicable keywords in your URLs, too. And if you have old, broken links, make sure to use 301 redirects to point them to the new version of the web page.
Another guideline Google gives us is to create a navigation structure for your website that's clear and easy to follow. No page should be an island or orphaned off by itself. Instead, each page on your website should be linked to from at least one other page on your site.
Here's one another build your website and web pages for your visitors and for the sorts of people you want to help and serve in your online business...not for search engines. One of the worst things you can do is use deceptive tactics or try to trick either Google or your website visitors.
For example, keyword stuffing, cloaking content, or showing one version of a page to search engines and a different page to Google. All of this falls under "black hat" SEO...and while some underhanded tactics may work temporarily, Google WILL find out.
And when they do, they'll ban your site entirely from search rankings. So always stick with "white hat" SEO and build content for your visitors.

As a small business owner, creator, or self-marketer, I'm sure you've heard about the importance of SEO. But it seems like somewhat of a mystical art, doesn't it? After all, how come some websites consistently appear at the top of search engine rankings while others don't?
And how can you get your website to start showing up in Google and other search engines, too? Well, without a clear understanding of SEO, what it is (and isn't) and how search engines work, then even your best efforts may fall flat.
To begin, it goes without saying that search is huge, SEO is huge, and learning how to use it for your small business website is also huge. Interestingly, the two most popular websites on the planet also happen to be the two biggest search engines on the planet: Google and YouTube.
Of course, there's also Bing, Yahoo, and others, but these two are the biggies. And of course, search engines are one of the most powerful and direct ways that we can reach our audiences. So let's clarify things here.
As business owners and marketers, we need to recognize that SEO isn't the be-all, end-all. SEO will not make or break your business. Yes, search engines can drive a huge amount of traffic to your site. Yes, SEO is important.
But keep in mind that search engines are just one of several lead generation strategies you may choose to make use of in your business. SEO is just a single tool in a workshop full of tools that are available to you and your online venture.
So let's be sure to keep some perspective on it! I like to clarify and specify SEO as exactly what it is -- a method for generating traffic -- because I think that a lot of online business owners put their entire focus on it and make it into something bigger than it actually is.
I hold the same view with social media. The world's third most popular website is Facebook. So, many online business owners believe social media is also one of these make or break components for their business...as if getting your business on Twitter and Instagram will guarantee revenue. It won't.
If success were guaranteed by simply using SEO or opening a Facebook page for our business, then we'd all be multi-millionaires! It just ain't that simple. Instead what I'm suggesting is a combination of tools and strategies, and using them together. SEO is just one such strategy. Does that make sense?

SEO may seem like complex subject, but it's actually fairly straightforward once you have a handle on it. While it may seem somewhat mystical or shrouded in the dark arts, you just need an understanding of basics. It's important too to know what you can safely ignore.
Here, you'll get three solid methods for implementing an SEO strategy immediately for your online business. I call this my Small Business SEO Checklist.
Alright, now before we dive in I should mention that this post is much more strategy-based or tactical. If you don't yet have a full understanding of SEO, what it is (and isn't), and how search engines work, then you may want to check out a few of my other posts.
Okay now, as you might guess, there are a whole bunch of things you can do to improve your website's SEO. And it's easy to get overwhelmed.
So this is why I want to give you my top three techniques -- the three absolutely most important things -- that you can apply immediately to get your website, products, and articles ranking in Google. Even just these three methods can make a huge difference for your online business.
The first big thing you can do to get going with an SEO strategy is to begin publishing keyword-targeted, helpful, valuable content for your audience. This means publishing articles, blog posts, and even videos that relate directly to the sorts of things your target audience is searching for.
As you begin publishing content on a regular basis, search engines like Google -- or even YouTube for video -- will begin picking up your content and ranking it in search results. The whole key here though is that you have to know what sorts of keywords your audience is using when they search online.
Research is a critically important aspect of your SEO strategy, and I'd love to show you exactly how to do it effectively. In the meantime though, something else you can do to get moving with your SEO is to set up what's called a sitemap for your website.
A sitemap is just a list of links to all the pages in your website. Back in the day, we'd manually create these page by page, link by link. But these days there are plenty of free tools that automate this process...and automatically add listings as you add pages to your website.
As far as SEO is concerned, what a sitemap does is provides search engine crawlers with exactly what they need to index all the content on your website, all in one place. This ensures that Google and other search engines know about and index all the pages on your website...without missing any content.
Finally, the last critical thing you can do for your online business's SEO is to make sure that your website is mobile-friendly. All this means is that your website works and functions well on tablet and smartphone devices. How does this relate to SEO?
Well back in 2015 Google updated it's search algorithm to prioritize mobile-friendly websites. This means that if your website isn't mobile friendly...then it's going to hurt your chances of ranking on search results pages. The good news is, nearly all modern website templates and themes are mobile friendly.
But it's a good idea to double-check that your site functions well on mobile devices. So there's a look at the three most critical SEO tasks you can get to right away. Again, start publishing high-value content for your audience, set up a sitemap for your site...
...and finally, make sure your site is mobile-friendly. Again, SEO isn't complicated or difficult -- you just have to have a way to separate the wheat from the chaff and figure out what's most important.
And you might be sitting there wondering about other aspects of SEO that you may have heard of, like alt tags, titles, and heading levels.
That's all important stuff too, but not nearly as important as our three-item SEO checklist for small business that we just went through.

This might not sound all that important to your search ranking strategies, but making sure your website functions well on smartphones and tablets actually plays a big role in how well your website and your content ranks. In dorky web design terms, this is called responsive design, or mobile design.
How does making sure your website works well on mobile devices relate to SEO? Well, back in 2015 Google updated it's search algorithm to prefer websites that are mobile-friendly. Why did Google do this?
Well, prior to responsive design, websites often had two or three different versions of their site to work on different kinds of devices. I remember those days...it was a freakin' headache! This of course created tons of duplicate content...and duplicate content created a big problem for Google and other search engines.
Firstly, duplicate content meant more pages that bots had to crawl through and index, creating a huge strain on resources. Second, how can the search engine tell what content is legitimate and what's fraudulent?
After all, couldn't website owners just create four or five duplicates of the same content in an effort to get higher rankings? So Google solved these problems by changing it's algorithm to prefer mobile-friendly websites.
That solved Google's resource and duplicate content problem, and made mobile or responsive design a key ingredient in successful SEO. So in short, if your website doesn't adjust and respond to different screen sizes and devices, Google will penalize you by ranking you lower than websites that are mobile-friendly.
So, as you begin building your website design and layout, you'll want to make sure it functions well on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. And note too that this isn't just about SEO. It's also about your visitor's experience, too.
I don't need to tell you that more and more people are spending their lives on their phones, surfing the web, searching for content, and shopping online. So, ensuring your site is mobile-friendly serves your audience, too.

If you're unsure, a sitemap is simply a list of all the pages and posts you have on your website. What this does is gives search engines like Google an easy to find list of all the pages and content on your website.
This makes it easy for Google to crawl through your site and index your content. Essentially, what you're doing is giving Google a crawlable structure of hyperlinks for your entire website.
Now there are a few different ways to set up a sitemap for your website. You could create one manually from scratch, which I suppose is fine. Or you could use a website add-on or plug-in to create a sitemap for your site.
This is a great option if you're using a platform like WordPress (which, by the way, is highly recommended!) Finally, you can also use an automated online sitemap generator if you like.
Whichever way you go, know that including a sitemap on your website is a great SEO strategy. Know too that sitemaps also come in a few different file types...but I'd suggest you stick with what's called an XML sitemap. They're the most widely used and accepted.
So if you haven't done so yet, add setting up a sitemap to your list of short-term website to-dos!

Are we too late? Are Google, YouTube, and the web overall completely oversaturated? Is it worthwhile to bother with SEO and trying to rank our web pages in search?
Is it even worth it to try and publish videos on YouTube or try to use some other social media platform to bring people back to our home base on the web, our website? Well guess what? People were asking those sorts of questions 10 years ago.
And 10-20 years from now, we'll look back and go, "Man, those were the good old days. It was so much easier then!" Remember that the internet is still very young. Really, we've only had the commercial web as we know it for about 20 years.
Look at how long the concept of newspaper publishing, book publishing, television, and radio have been around. Imagine someone in the 1980s saying, "Eh, radio's completely oversaturated...it isn't worthwhile anymore...forget it!"
So let me ask you: Does Google look like it's struggling? Remember, the core of their business is search. And for online business owners like you and I, that means SEO is still a viable strategy...maybe now more than ever. And obviously, Google and the internet aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
So while it might seem like your competitors might have a head start on you, there's still plenty of room. Only about half the world's population is online. And besides, even if things look oversaturated, if you have a strong work ethic, you can easily out-work others.
You can publish web content to rank in the search engines more frequently than they do, optimize your content better than they do, and you can play the long game longer and harder than they do.
