how to use content marketing to grow your business
As online business owners and online marketers, if we're leveraging platforms like YouTube or if we're following an SEO strategy and ranking content in Google, or even if we're using some social media platform, then it's very important to understand YouTube's top priority and Google's top priority.
Us online business owners, online marketers, and creators are NOT YouTube or Google's priority. Instead, YouTube and Google are focused entirely on their end users. In the case of YouTube, their priority is to keep people on YouTube for as long as possible.
Google's top priority is to provide their users with the best quality search results for whatever it is they're searching for. Why is this important for us marketers and online business owners? Because if we can help YouTube, Google, and other platforms with their priorities...they'll help us.
For example, if you provide the best possible content for specific search phrases and keywords, that helps Google help their end users...and as a result, Google will reward us by ranking our content.
And for us, this entire process starts with finding out exactly what the sorts of people we want to attract to our websites are searching for online. Or in the case of YouTube, the sorts of content they like to view. This is what market research and keyword research are all about.
Once we know what sorts of things our audience is searching for, that helps us better serve them because now we can create the exact sorts of videos, articles, and blog posts that can help them the most and give them exactly what they're after.
Said another way, if you want traffic landing on your website and product offers...if you want to build an audience around your online business, then you have to provide to people the sorts of things they ALREADY want to consume. Here, it's simply a matter of giving them what they already want.

difference between successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurs
The only difference between successful people and non-successful people is 1) What they know (knowledge, skills -- skill stack), 2) What they believe (mindset, worldview), 3) What they can get themselves to consistently do (habits)
It isn't education, connections, or skill. It isn't the family they were born into, the college they went to, or how lucky they are. There are plenty of rags to riches stories to disprove these sorts of things.
Instead, it simply boils down to the distinctions they've made -- the clarity they've gotten. What if you were just 10 distinctions away from your dream life? What if you knew you were only 5 big distinctions away? What would you do?
If you're smart -- and you're no dummy -- then you'd start knocking down those distinctions as quickly as you could. You'd hit the library, dig through books, slog through blog posts and podcasts...do whatever it takes to find the answers you need, right?
Listen, on any given business topic...(pick a topic: Pricing, branding, content marketing, e-commerce...doesn't matter)...there are two separate realities:
There's the reality that's created by our opinion, and then there's ACTUAL reality and fact. If you believe, for example, that people won't pay very much for your product, that OPINION (not fact) creates your reality.
Meanwhile, a completely alternative reality exists alongside this imaginary reality that says that people are indeed willing to pay a lot for a product like yours.
So each distinction you make in business is knocking down a false belief you have about reality and how things work. And I don't know about you, but what I want most is to not live in a hallucination, but to rely as much as possible on objective facts.
And as for making distinctions, think of it like this: Next time you're out on the highway, look for the mile markers along the side of the road. These mile markers are like distinctions...and the more we pass, the closer we get to wherever we're going.
Some people are just starting out. Others have been on this road for years and years and have passed hundreds or even thousands of mile marker distinctions. If you've only passed one or two, keep going. Again, what if you're only 5 or 10 distinctions away from where you want to go?
The business world is littered with stories of people who were just a few steps away from their destination...but they couldn't get themselves to keep going. They quit too soon. They quit because they had false beliefs in their heads that they mistook for fact and reality.

how to create demand for a new product
Have you ever launched what you thought was an absolutely killer product or service...only to have it fall completely on deaf ears? In other words, all you got was crickets? Well the good news is, you're in good company! Every entrepreneur goes through this experience.
So where do you go from here? Crickets are not your customers...so launching to crickets is no good, right? Instead, you want to launch to an engaged audience of rabid customers, right?
So it all begins with realizing (usually after launching once or twice to crickets) that you're an entrepreneur and online business owner...not an inventor. The reason why you launched to crickets is probably because nobody needed what you were trying to sell.
Said another way, the product or service you launched didn't solve any painful or frustrating problems for anyone. It solved YOUR problem of needing to launch an absolutely perfected product that was sure to solve all your money problems...but it didn't solve anyone else's problems. Hence why the crickets came out.
So, you're an entrepreneur, not an inventor. You don't need to invent anything. That's the most important thing to know. You don't need to re-invent the wheel, come up with something that's way better than sliced bread, or come up with the next the pet rock.
Instead, all you need to do is find out what your target audience needs. Don't come up with an invented need. So not, "I've got a great idea for a business" but, "How can I serve my audience and help them solve their problems?"
And you know what? It costs very little to find out. Yet most business newbies are either afraid or unwilling to find this kinda stuff out...because they're so in love with their idea and want so badly for their idea to work.
A lot of entrepreneurs say, "I want to sell what I want to sell...not what people want to buy!" Oh okay, so you're an artist, not an entrepreneur. Artists do work they want to create...and then go look for customers. And hey, that's totally fine for artists. Nothing wrong with that.
But we aren't artists. We're entrepreneurs. And that means doing the opposite to what artists do: We go and find potential customers, and then create what they want us to create...in a way that fits our preferences, skills, and personality.

how to develop a skill set
Here's what super-successful people do: They use their natural interests, preferences, and passions as a foundation to construct a unique set of skills -- skills that are in demand, hold market value, and that other people are willing to pay for.
This set of skills is what's called a Skill Stack. This is a concept popularized by a number of people, including Scott Adams of Dilbert fame. Here are a few interesting points about all this:
1) It's a myth that you have to be "the best in the world" at one thing. Truly successful people (however you want to define that) have a mixture of skills.
For example, you might be the best drummer in the world or the world's greatest tango dancer, but if you don't have complimentary skills to go with these, then they aren't much use to you beyond personal enjoyment. And this leads us perfectly into the next point:
2) Obtaining complimentary skills. This is what your Skill Stack is really all about -- it's a stack, or a collection, of skills and abilities that compliment each other, that increase your probability of success.
If our "best in the world" drummer or tango dancer want to make a career for themselves, what additional skills could they develop to increase their probabilities of reaching this goal? Sure, geographic location, connections, their personal situation, and other issues factor in, but what else can they develop?
What other interests and skills do they have, or could they develop? For instance, if you know who Jimmy Diresta is, then you know that his skill stack goes, "General Contractor Skills + Creativity + Video Recording & Editing" or if you follow Adam Savage and Tested, then his goes, "Prop Building + Engineering + Social Media + Childlike Curiosity"
Here's the next point: Super-successful people use their natural abilities, interests, and preferences as the foundation for their Skill Stack. It all starts here. Initially, they follow what comes naturally to them...and then they build on top.
And by the way, this includes accumulating skills, knowledge, and abilities that they may not be all that interested in...but they add them to their skill stack anyway because they compliment the skills they already have.

why online business is important
If 2020 Didn't Convince You That Online Business...
We all witnessed the craziness and downright insanity of 2020...lockdowns, the destruction of local businesses, wide-scale unrest, the emptying out of major cities...
I just read and article about Toronto condo "for sale" listings surging 215% beyond the same time last year. And Toronto's not that far from where I am -- north of Toronto by an hour or so out in the country. And here, real estate's going ballistic.
Why? People are leaving major metropolitan areas. After 2020, all the benefits cities offered are now irrelevant.
For example, most people lived in or near cities for work...but now for many of us, geographic location is irrelevant for work because we're working remotely. What about being close to world-class restaurants, theatres, sporting events and other live events? Well, a lot of those are closed, bankrupt, or otherwise unavailable.
And as 2020 progressed, one of my biggest concerns was small business owners. Small mom and pop shops...dry cleaners, restaurants, bakeries, salons...small business owners are my people! And small, physical, brick and mortar businesses suffered big time. Many will never return.
But you know who didn't suffer? Online businesses...that is, businesses that were detached from a physical location...who could work from anywhere, who could serve their customers without the constraints or limitations of a physical location or physical distance.
So you know what? If you have strong ambitions to build, run, and grow a business...you shouldn't need any more evidence beyond the events we all witnessed in 2020 that online business is the way to go.
Yes, we will always need more traditional, physical businesses -- grocery stores, dry cleaners, and so on. But at the same time, one of the things that 2020 has taught us is this:
That anything that *CAN* be done online, including things like learning, one-on-one consultations, workgroup meetings, and so on, *WILL* be done online. It's clear as day: Online business is the future...and 2020 gave us the push over the edge that we needed.
So if you're a yoga instructor for example, think about how you might do that online. I can hear people now, "Well you can't do that online!" Great, you're dead in the water before you even got started! Seriously, use a bit of creativity.
Can you offer one-on-one custom coaching via Zoom? Could you put together a self-paced online course? Could you narrow down your market to, say, mom's who've had their first baby and want their pre-pregnancy body back? Get creative -- that's what you're being called to do!
Yes, it's hard work. Yes, it takes creativity and ingenuity. Yes, there are major obstacles in front of you that, if you haven't hit them yet, you will. Sounds positive, doesn't it?! But that's the truth. So don't expect everything to be easy sailing.
The way I look at all of this is like a set of tests or a series of trials that we have to overcome -- we're tested and thrown all sorts of challenges, problems, and obstacles to overcome to see just how committed we are.
So yeah I know 2020 has been crazy. It's been devastating for many. Life isn't fair and life isn't easy. But as small business owners we can take advantage of all these radical changes we're seeing, we can harness easy to use, readily available technology...
...and we can begin building an online business doing work that's fulfilling to us, that matters to the people we want to serve.

i want to quit my job and start a business
Don't fire your boss just yet. As much as you hate his guts and want to smash his face into his latte grande...the truth is that you need him, and your paycheck, for now. Hang in there. You can fire him soon enough.
In the meantime, plot your escape. Start by deciding what kinds of people you want as customers. Who is it that you want to serve? Do you want to work with urban planners? Dentists? Expectant mothers? What kinds of people do you want to work with and serve all day long? Decide now.
Next, find out what sorts of problems and challenges the target audience you've identified has...and figure out if any of these are viable business opportunities. Here's what "viable business opportunity" means:
1) Does the solution to this problem intersect in any way with your unique set of skills, knowledge, or abilities? 2) Will these people pay for a solution to this problem, and 3) Can you engineer a solution that you can sell to them at enough of a profit to make the whole thing worthwhile?
The next thing you need to do is to think up a business name. Truthfully, the name of your business doesn't really matter, but make sure it relates somehow to your solution or your product. And this leads perfectly into your next step, which is to...
...register your domain name. This one's an easy one and only takes a few minutes and a few bucks. Check out the Show Notes below where I'll leave you some links to tutorials that'll walk you through the simple process.
Next up, maybe a bit of a detour: Business cards? Okay fine. But keep them simple and make sure this doesn't devolve into an exercise in vanity. Forget foil embossments or UV Spot finishes or any of that nonsense. Just tell us what the hell you do and how to contact you. Simple.
Continuing on the detour -- and actually before your business card detour -- what about a logo for your business? Okay fine, but for godsakes don't spend much time or money on this. A really great, clever logo does not guarantee that your business idea will be successful.
Just like business cards (and stationary, and embroidered shirts, and new office furniture) this whole project can quickly careen out of control into a deep (and useless) exercise in vanity. In terms of what you need to know, the short version is that your logo's simply an emblem for your business.
This means that at least starting out, good enough is good enough. Just hire someone on Fivver or 99Designs, throw $100 at it and call it a day. You can always rebrand and unveil your $500,000 logo after you're a millionaire, right? What matters most right now is sales!

why is wp engine so expensive
WP Engine is a very popular web hosting company with a solid reputation. They're a top choice for small business website hosting and e-commerce hosting. But, they may not be ideal for every business.
WP Engine specializes in offering just one kind of web hosting: Premium Managed WordPress Hosting. This means that a team of WordPress experts looks after and manages your website for you, taking care of security, performance, and any technical details that may arise.
This makes WP Engine among the best WordPress business hosting services. Review WP Engine and you'll find their managed WordPress hosting is geared towards business owners and more experienced users.
So if you're a busy business owner who doesn't want to be bothered with day-to-day technical details of running your website, then WP Engine is a perfect fit.
Here, WP Engine is all about performance, security, and management. They work hard to optimize their web servers so that your site runs as fast as possible. And, their team of experts are there to oversee that your site's well looked after.
However, this does mean that WP Engine has higher monthly costs than other hosting options. So they may not be suitable for every business website. But, what you're paying for is the aforementioned performance, security, and management.
If it's performance you want, it's performance you're gonna get! Within WP Engine's specialized hosting service, they offer four plans, Startup, Growth, Scale, and Custom. Their cheapest hosting plan, Startup, starts at $35 per month.
That price tag might give you a bit of shock, especially considering some of the other, lower-cost business website web hosting options we've discussed. But remember, they're all about speed, performance, and management.
Further, each WP Engine plan comes with a free SSL certificate (a must for your business website), free CDN, daily website backups, and a few more extras too.

use of psychology in business
As marketers and online business owners, we have to be very careful about the associations we make with our messaging and marketing. Here's what I mean: I remember years ago there was a Dairy Queen commercial that advertised their new hamburger.
In the ad, they showed this new hamburger on top of an ice cream cone. I suppose the thinking was, Dairy Queen is known for ice cream so they wanted to inform viewers that they also served burgers.
But the way they did this visually, by stacking the burger on top of the ice cream cone was repulsive...to me at least. The association this immediately made in my head was "Hamburger = Ice cream," "Hamburger = Ice cream," "Hamburger = Ice cream." Uggghhh, disgusting!
It made me immediately think of hamburger-flavoured ice cream, or beef-flavoured ice cream. It made me wonder what that might taste like. Disgusting!
Here's another example: I went to use the washroom at a sports bar. I go inside, and there what they'd done is made the men's urinals out of old metal beer kegs that had been cut open.
My immediate first thought was, "That's not necessary...why not just have regular urinals, who cares?" Then, as I "continued using their facilities" let's say...I began thinking, "Huh, returning the contents from which it came. Interesting."
But then I started making the following association: "Beer keg = Urine," "Beer keg = Urine," "Beer keg = Urine"...ugghhh gross...beer at this bar tastes like urine! Disgusting! Needless to say, I didn't finish my pint!
Now these are of course negative associations, but what about positive associations? Can you think of any? What association do you have when you think of your favourite luxury brand? How does that make you feel? Big brands work very hard to keep their associations positive...things like elegance, exclusivity, quality...things like that.
So for yourself, consider the messaging that you're sending. Are you keeping things positive and making your audience feel good when they think about you? Or are you maybe making some negative associations that you aren't aware of?

can your target market be everyone
The truth of the matter is that most of your audience won't buy from you. That's just how it is. And really, this is what having a sales funnel is all about.
Really, it's just a numbers game -- you want to attract the exact sorts of people who you want to work with and help, and dissuade everyone else.
Trying to serve everyone and please everyone and trying to sell everyone is futile. It's totally an uphill grind that's completely unproductive...because it costs you tons of time, money, and energy.
Why focus on unproductive tasks when there's only 24 hours in a day? Why not focus your efforts on helping the sorts of people you want to work with?
So here's a strategy to help separate the majority of people who won't ever buy from you in a million years from others -- your exact target audience of ideal customers: Simply ask them to put some skin in the game.
Tell them about all the great benefits and value and problem-solving solutions they'll get...and then ask them to put something in -- their email address, some kind of small, nominal fee...*something!*
I'll give you a quick example: I put together a short, direct, concise book called Online Business Building Blocks. This book completely lays out everything online business owners need in clear, simple steps. And I charge a whopping $7 for it.
Now this isn't a sales pitch for Online Business Building Blocks (but you can grab a copy for yourself over at tentononline.com if you like)...instead, I'm trying to illustrate creating some kind of a tiny barrier.
Putting up a bit of a wall that says, "Hey, here's this really great thing. It's going to lay everything you need to know out into simple, clear steps...and it's only a few dollars."
And you know what this does? This pre-qualifies your customers. This instantly separates people who are serious about getting specific results for themselves...and everyone else.
So think about how you might use this in your own online business. Could you offer a low-cost product or service? Could you create something that potential customers can only get if they exchange their email address for it?
The key here is that it has to be "low friction." What I mean by that is, you have to make it really easy for the exact sorts of people you're seeking to attract to say "yes" to your offer.
Something like, "Just $7? Sure that's nothing!" or "just my email address and I get tis really useful thing? No problem!"

importance of personality in marketing
An unbelievably persuasive character trait is anything positive. People want to feel good. They want hope that they aren't alone and that there are fixes to their pressing and painful problems. They want a guide to show them how. And they want to feel good in the process.
Here's a quick example: Remember the show Myth Busters? Who was your favourite on the show? While Jamie is very smart and clear-thinking, most people gravitate to Adam. He's warm, fun, relatable, and goofy. In short, anytime Adam's on screen, we feel good.
And for your online business, that's exactly what you want. You want your audience, your prospects, your website visitors, and your customers to feel good anytime they're interacting with you, your content, your messaging, and whatever else you have for them.
You can do this in any way that you like, so long as it's casual and natural, not forced. The other point too is, don't go way overboard. People who appear to have had 17 coffees that morning or who are maybe on recreational drugs are too much to take.
Tone it back and keep everything light and fun. Here's a quick example of how I do this with Ten Ton: If we met in person, you'd discover that I'm just as relaxed, chilled out, fun, casual, and kinda goofy in real life as I am here.
I just worked all this stuff into what I do cuz it comes naturally...Plus, I wanna have fun in my business too, right? But admittedly way back I didn't really recognize or understand how powerful this is in terms of making people feel good and attracting people to my work.
My students started telling me things like, "Your online course was awesome! I laughed as much as I learned" or "This is such great content. Highly informative and delivered in such a fun, casual way." What I realized was...in short...I was making people feel comfortable. I was making people feel positive and good.
So think about how you can use this for yourself in your own online business. If you decide to use humour or be super-laid back or whatever direction you take, just make sure it's authentic and natural.

If you decide to use humour or be super-laid back or whatever direction you take, just make sure it's authentic and natural.

does subscriber count matter on youtube
Subscriber count on YouTube channels, or follower counts on other platforms, really don't mean nearly as much as people seem to think. In fact, from an online business perspective, it's the wrong metric to track.
On YouTube at least, 80-95% of individual video views come from people who are not subscribed to the channel. Really on YouTube, subscriber count doesn't mean views. Most views don't come from subscribers. So if subscribers aren't driving views, then where are views coming from?
Well, views are coming primarily from search and from suggested videos -- videos that get suggested alongside the current video, and that display at the end of a video. Here's what I mean:
If I look at the lifetime analytics for my YouTube channel, just 2% of my views come from my subscribers, 34% of my views come from Suggested Videos, 26% comes from YouTube Search, and 23% comes from outside YouTube.
The remaining views come from my channel page, browse features, video cards, and others...none amounting to much. Of the views that come from outside YouTube, 72% come from Google search and 8% come from my website, tentononline.com.
So really, subscriber count means nothing. The only value subscriber count has is 1) Social proof, 2) Vanity. Other than that, subscriber count means nothing for the sorts of things that are important in your online business...like the size of your mailing list, number of sales, revenue, and so on.
Even channels that have hundreds of thousands of subscribers often struggle to get more than, say, 6000 to 10,000 views on individual videos. Remember, a subscriber or a follower is simply someone who, at one point in time in the past said, "Well okay, I guess I'll follow this person."
Where are they now? Very likely, they've moved on to something else and are no longer really paying any attention...otherwise individual video views would be much, much higher. So don't get hung up on followers and subscribers. Again, it's of very little value in terms of your online business.
Subscriber or follower count tells you nothing about the age, demographics, or purchasing power of your audience. It says nothing about if they're willing to buy, how engaged they are, etc. It's meaningless beyond, "how many people have clicked Subscribe during the lifetime of this channel."

do subscribers matter on youtube
If you're using social media as a way to share helpful and useful content for your target audience, then it's very easy to get caught up with metrics like views, subscribers, likes, followers, and so on. EVERYONE focuses on these. This is what EVERYONE wants. But guess what? They don't matter!.
As an example, my best-performing video on YouTube has 170k views and does NOTHING for me, my business, or my bank account. In fact on YouTube, subscriber count only accounts for 2-5% of your views. Seriously, go look at big, big channels...and look at how many views their videos get.
Now this isn't always the case. Sometimes a video will have more views that the channel has subscribers. But by and large, video views will only be 2-5% of the channels subscriber count. Why is that?
Because subscriber count is a metric that says, "here's how many people follow this channel over the entire lifetime of the channel." It's like a half-hearted non-committal vote. "Yeah sure, I'll follow you."
So while having a big sub count can maybe help a bit...it's not all it's cracked up to be. In other words, it's the wrong metric to pay attention to. This is because subscriber count or follower count is uncorrelated to your online business's revenue.
If you decide to go the paid ad route on YouTube for example (which I don't suggest as the core of your business), here you get paid per x-number of views. So here subscriber count doesn't matter. Instead the two metrics that matter are watch time and view count.
Subscriber count on YouTube or number of followers on some other social media platform is the equivalent to number of RSS subscribers on your blog. All that number means is, in the lifetime of your blog, how many people have clicked "subscribe?"
It doesn't indicate how many people come back and view your content each month. It doesn't indicate how many people joined your online business's mailing list...and of course, it doesn't indicate at all what your online business's revenue is.

choosing a career based on money or passion
If you want, you can play games that have a very high probability for making you lots of money doing work that you don't enjoy at all. That's fine.
But if you despise the game you choose to play for the majority of your adult life in exchange for all that money, then you'll be no more fulfilled than someone condemned to a life of poverty. The world is filled with people who have more than enough money, who are absolutely miserable.
Instead, the key word here is "fulfillment." yes, money's important. Yes we need it to survive, thrive, and even to have fun and adventure...but it isn't everything and it certainly isn't a cure-all.
You know what money does? All money can do is solve money-related problems. That's it. Sure it's important to solve money problems...but money can't fix your family problems or give you genuine friendships or give you lasting happiness. All those things have to come from somewhere else.
So rather than chasing money, why not play games that have a high probability for personal fulfilment? See, this is the opportunity that the internet and online business gives us. We can do work that we enjoy, serving the sorts of people we want to help, and we can make a really great living at it too.
I can't imagine a better opportunity! What a blessing that we were both born when we were, with the opportunities we have, with all this cheap and readily available technology. So we don't have to play zero-sum status games. Instead, we can play positive-sum games where everyone wins!
