Was there someone unlucky enough to witness all three sacks of Rome in the 400s? It is a fascinating notion to think that there might have been some people who witnessed the entire 80 year span of the Fall of the Western Roman Empire first hand so to speak, and who were in the midst of the chaos. Was there someone who witnessed the entire dissolution of the Western Roman Empire? Someone who was born when the Empire was still stable, and who died after the last Western Roman Emperor was abdicated? Let's try to find out if that might have been possible, and what such an unlucky person living in Rome in the 400s would have witnessed.

The history of the city of Constantinople is, similarly to the history of the city of Rome, often wrongly portrayed in many videos, books, movies and in media in general. The same oversimplifications as in the case of Rome, where it is often wrongly said that the city fell in 476 AD, when we by now have learned that Rome actually went on in 476 AD as if nothing happened, and the real disaster came 60 years later with the Gothic wars, these same oversimplifications are also applied to Constantinople, the new Rome. In the case of Constantinople, it is often said that when it fell in 1453, that this was the end of a magnificent and beautiful city, which was very populated and had many magnificent buildings. But, as we shall see in this video, the real disaster for Constantinople actually happened in 1204 AD, when the city was sacked by the 4th crusade, and in reality, by 1453, Constantinople had become more cow pasture than city. But what would an eyewitness have seen before, during and after, the sack of Constantinople in the year 1204 AD?

How would it have been to go to the baths on a nice day in Rome of the year 520AD, so 44 years after the date, which is in schoolbooks generally referred to as the "Fall" of the Roman Empire? How would that experience have been, and how would it have differed from the bathing experience during the times of the empire? Were the great baths of Rome even still functioning, or were they already beyond repair and had started to fall into ruin? Were the baths already overgrown with greenery and the waterpools empty, barren, and desolate? Or were they still frequented by the Romans and still a hub of bustling activity? Well, dear friends of Roman history, let's imagine how it must have been to go to the baths in Rome after the Fall.

Why are there no statues of some, nay, even most of the late Western Roman Emperors? It is as if after Valentinian III, the statues suddenly just stop, but even before that, both the number and quality of statues that have been found, seems to have dropped dramatically. There are simply no statues of Petronius Maximus, of Avitus, of Majorian, Libius Severus, Anthemius, Olybrius, Glycerius, Julius Nepos or Romulus Augustus! It is as if suddenly the emperors just stopped to have any statues made of them. So what had happened? Let us then try to understand why there was suddenly such a lack of Roman statues after some point in the 5th century AD.

Which was the most impressive city of late antiquity? By now, we have discussed in detail the urban layout and buildings of the three great cities of the late Roman Empire, around the year 400 AD. These were Rome, then the new Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria. And in this comparison, I also want to include the other great city of the Empire, namely Antioch. Each one of those mentioned cities was incredibly splendorous beyond belief in their prime, but which one would have appeared most magnificent to a traveller of the year 400? Which was the largest in those times, and which one boasted the most monumental buildings? Well, we shall see during the course of this video, that answering this question is not as easy as we might think.

What if the battle of the Frigidus river in 394 AD had never happened? What if that fateful battle between the eastern forces of Theodosius and Stilicho and the western forces of Eugenius and Arboghast, just never occured? How would that have impacted the further evolution of the Roman Empire? Well friends of late Roman history, I hope I will be able to convincingly demonstrate, that the world in which we would live right now, would be a very very different one, if that impactful battle of world history, had never taken place.

The late Roman Navy: Weak, degenerate, only a shadow of its former self. The once mighty fleet of the Romans that had dominated the Mediterranean, that had once defeat even mighty Carthage, hundreds of years later: In decline. In disuse. Slowly falling apart, by 400 AD incapable of defending the Mare Nostrum, the Mediterranean. Or was it? As so often with late roman issues of any kind, the late romans are often again portrayed as weak and degenerate descendants of mightier ancestors. We saw this same narrative with the late roman land armies, where I hope that I could show in several videos, that the late roman army was in fact until the very end a formidable fighting force. And of course, the late Roman Navy shares the same fate as the late Roman land armies, in that historians often brush over it, often in just a few sentences, and the verdict seems all to clear: Namely that the late roman navy was only a shadow of its former self. But is this true?

Probably everyone who is interested in the Fall of the Roman Empire, will have noticed some eery similarities between the late roman empire, and the state of the western democracies, especially western Europe, but to some degree also the USA. So let us explore the similarities between the state of the current west, and the state of the western roman empire in its last 100 years of existence. Well, this will certainly be a controversial video, but it is an important topic, so it must be discussed because Julius Valerius Maiorianus would not have shied away from such topics.

Why did the martial vigor of the Romans decline in the late Roman Empire? Had the Romans become decadent and lazy, as Edward Gibbon famously implied in his classic "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" ? Was the martial spirit of old gone, the Roman blood weak, and thus there was just no strength left in the native Roman population, so that the Western Roman Empire had to recruit more and more barbarian mercenaries that would fight in the service of Rome? Well, I hope that I will be able to show you in this video, that Gibbon's view is really outdated, and the reasons as for why the Roman martial spirit had seemed to decline, are manifold.

This is a bit of an unusual video, but since I am not only interested in roman history, but also in movies, I thought it might be a good idea to explore some movies set in the late Roman Empire, the era of the Roman Empire, which is the main focus of this channel. Because we know that there is a vast prodominance of movies that take place in the late Roman Republic, and the early Roman Empire. We have seen countless movies about Caeasar, or about Augustus, when Rome was in its prime. But what about the later Roman Empire, when the good times were already over, when the decline would start to set in? Are there any good movies set in that fascinating period, which is of utmost interest to myself and to anyone interested in the late roman empire?

Was the late Roman soldier really so degenerate and inferior compared to the Legionary of the late Roman Republic and the early to mid Roman Empire? Was the equipment in the late Roman Empire really so inferior, and the discipline really so declined as compared to the discipline of the legionary of earlier times? Well, friends of Roman history, I hope I will be able to show you, that even though on first glance it might look that way, in reality, the late roman soldier was as formidable a combattant as the early legionary.

If we look at early roman busts or statues, such as for example the famous Augustus statue of Prima Porta, we are immediately struck be the exquisite detail and incredibly high level of cratsmanship displayed. The statue almost feels life-like, the realistic facial features of the emperor, the incredible detail of the breastplate, and the realistic way how the cloth falls with all its creases. But then we look at a bust from the late roman empire, such as this one here of Valentinian III, we are immediately struck by the much lower level of detail and apparently inferior artistic complexity. The same picture with coins: Early roman coins until the crisis of the third century display a very high level of detial, but then in the 4th and especially 5th centuries, the quality dropped considerably. What happened? Had art started to decline? Was this a deliberate choice of the artists, was this a new artistic style, or was this a degradation of the art itself in the late Roman Empire? Let us try to answer that question, friends of late roman history!

Finally the time has come to paint a more realistic picture of a supposedly great emperor, who has been stylyzed mostly by the christian Church to have been excellent for the Roman Empire, but who in reality would do incredible damage to the very fabric of Rome. I hope I will be able to convince you that contrary to common belief, it was Theodosius and his deeds, that would greatly contribute to the Fall of the Western Roman Empire.

The late Roman City: Beautiful temples, vast Fora, more impressive and splendorous than even what many modern cities have to offer, a beautiful architectural style, lots of statues everywhere, often even coated with gold, an incredible amount of classical art, many people walking through the streets, busy shop owners, rich aristocrats, then the huge baths, meeting place for thousands of people, unmatched in their grandiosity, then giant libraries, gargantuan theaters and amphitheaters. In short, when we think of the late Roman City, we think of the more positive aspects of roman life back then. But was everything really so nice in late antiquity? Was the late roman city really as beautiful as our sometimes romantisized glasses through which we see ancient roman history, would want to make us believe?

What if I told you that one of the key reasons why the Western Roman Empire fell, was that the Roman army was just too damn large. What at first sounds like a ridiculous joke, I hope I will be able to demonstrate, in fact is a legitimate contributing factor, which would cause the Empire to spiral out of control, leading to the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire during the course of the 5th century AD.

It is commonly taught in school that the Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, but I have tried to show in many videos, that this view is not only oversimplified, but actually wrong. We of course all know that the Eastern Roman Empire survived the Fall of the West, and that actually was the continuation of the Roman Empire for 1000 more years after the Western Imperial authority collapsed. But even with this acknowledgement, the view that the Western Roman Empire fell in 476, is oversimplified. Namely, we shall see during the course of this video, that two large states actually survived the Fall of the Western Roman Empire for up to 10 more years.

It is now time to start going through all the different tribes of the great migration period, and to estimate their part in the Fall of the Western Roman Empire. We know that many different germanic tribes played some part in the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, and the Vandals were probably the fiercest, the most ruthless and also the most cunning of them all. This germanic tribe would play a crucial role in the Fall of the Western Roman Empire by conquering its most prosperous province and by managing to establish themselves as rulers in northern Africa. But how on earth could the Vandals achieve such feats? Well, friends of late Roman history, let's find out!

How did the Romans dress in the late western and early eastern Imperium Romanum? We shall see during the course of this video, that the clothing style of the romans changed drastically from the time of the republic, until the Fall of the Western Roman Empire. In fact, the Romans of the late Empire would not have been recognizable as roman to a time traveller from say, the late republic. Why this was and how we can imagine this change, we shall find out right now.
