The Roman Empire would not have fallen if these decisions were made differently.

When we think of the fall of the roman empire, we tend to think that it was inevitable. That all human made empires have an expiration date, and that every empire, no matter how stable it is, has to fall at some point. We think that the roman empire had become old, corrupt, weak and had to fall sooner or later. But to the contemporaries, the fall of the empire was never a given, and in fact many Romans thought even as late as the fifth century that the troubles of the empire would pass again. Had the empire not already seen very bad times and had survived? Had the empire not withstood barbarian invasions before, during the crisis of the third century, and had survived? Alemanni and goths had invaved the empire during the crisis of the third century and had destroyed many cities in northern Italy in the late 250s AD, and later again in the early 270s. Had these attackers not been repelled by Gallienus at the battle of Mediolanum in 259, and by Aurelian in 271? Had the empire not suffered a humiliating defeat against the Persians, where emperor Valerian himself was taken captive by the persian king in 260? Had the empire not fractured before into three separate entities, with the gallic empire declaring independence from Rome in 260 AD, and with the palmyrene empire following in 270? Had not as a result of this huge crisis, even the roman trade network broken down in many parts, causing also huge economic trouble and rampant inflation? And yet, the Roman Empire had prevailed and survived these very dark times, thanks to heroes such as Aurelian? So why should the empire fall now in the fifth century. Who was to say that this wouldn't be remembered as the crisis of the fifth century, and that the roman empire would withstand these turbulent and chaotic times. So let us now examine the times where the roman empire could have been saved, had the right people been in charge at the right time, or if history would have diverged for whatever reason, from the path it took in our timeline.

In the last video we spoke about five momentous events in the history of the late western roman empire, from the battle of Adrianople in 378 AD to the invasion of Africa by the Vandals, from 429 to 439 AD. Now we will continue with the later roman empire, the very last tries to save it, and we shall even continue with the remaining eastern roman empire, it's ambitions to restore the lost provinces in the west and to restore the Imperium Romanum to its former glory.

Salvete Amici. When we read about the decline of ancient Rome, we often read that after the fall of the western roman empire, the dark ages would start in Italy and in Rome. We are lead to believe that the splendorous city that Rome had been, and still was to some degree in 476 AD, was now beginning to fade with the collapse of the western empire. But I hope I can show you in this video, dear friends of roman history, that nothing could be further from the truth.

Rome was by far for a very long time the largest city in the world in ancient times. Depending on which sources you consult, it is written that Rome had anywhere from 1 million to even 2 million inhabitants during its peak. Using archeological evidence and records of how much grain and pork was supplied in different times, we can reconstruct that the most probable number of inhabitants must have been from 800,000 to 1.2 million inhabitants in the time of Augustus, so around the birth of Christ.

When we see reconstructions of ancient Rome, we are quite amazed at how large this city must have appeared 1700 years ago. On these paintings here by Joseph Bühlmann, which he painted in 1887 and 1888, we can see Rome at the zenith of its splendour. It must have been quite a sight to behold, and Bühlmann in my opinion perfectly captures the might and splendour of Rome at the zenith of its might, when it reached its greatest extent. This was surprisingly late, in fact, Rome reached its largest extent in the early 300s AD, and Bühlmann chose the triumph of the emperor Constantine as a backdrop for his paintings, after Constantine defeated Maxentius at the famous battle of the Milvian Bridge, about which we of course will talk in a separate video. Because the fate of the world was decided in this battle, and it therefore deserves a lot of analysis, and will serve as a branching point for alternate history considerations.
So we are surprised to find Rome reaching the zenith of its might quite late in its history, in 312 AD. It is one of these ironies of history that Rome reached its peak not so long before the decline started. In fact we shall see that it was Constantine himself who is celebrated in this triumph like in the old traditions, who would initiate the decline and eventual downfall of the city of Rome.

The prime of Constantinople was surprisingly early, namely around 540 AD. About 200 years after Constantine had made Byzantium the new capital of the Roman empire and named it the New Rome, did this city already reach its zenith. In those days, Constantinople had around 500,000 inhabitants, and many incredibly impressive buildings, many of them going back to the days before Constantine. Many pagan temples were still standing in the city, many old classical statues and works of antiquity, many fountains and Nymphaea, and many imperial Fora were to be found throughout the new roman capital. A giant imperial palace complex, a large hippodrome second in size only to the Circus Maximus in Rome, many churches, and the impressive Theodosian land walls, which would time and again save the city. But many of the old buildings were destroyed in the Nika riots of 542, and even though rebuilt, Constantinople was after that not able to keep its old splendour for long. Already after 626 AD, the city started to decay visibly.

There are a few roman emperors that I truly admire, and of course I will dedicate separate videos to each and everyone of them. There is for example Flavius Julianus, the last openly pagan emperor of Rome. He was a brilliant man, who realized that Christianity had subverted the old societal structure, upon which Rome was based, and tried to restore the old faith, as he knew that if he would fail, so would the fate of Rome be decided. There was Eugenius, who would restore the altar of Victory to the Curia, the senate building in Rome, after Gratian had ordered the removal of this old pagan symbol. Eugenius had the roman temples of old open once again for the last time as late as 394 AD, the old rites being performed for one last time, as if the light of Rome was to shine brightly one last time, like a radiant flame amidst the growing darkness.

When the last western Roman Emperor Romulus Augustus was deposed by Odoacer, it is commonly taught that the Wester Roman Empire ended. But wait, the last rightful Western Roman Emperor was Julius Nepos, and he continued reigning in Dalmatia, so Dalmatia was a Western Roman remnant that remained under Roman rule until Julius Nepos' death in 480 AD. But wait, there was the kingdom of Soissons, the realm of Syagrius, which was a Western Roman remnant that remained under roman rule until Syagrius' death in 486 AD. But wait, there was the Mauro-roman kingdom, that was under rule of romano berber kings after the invasion of the Vandals in 429 until 578, when it was re-incorparated into the now Eastern Roman Empire. But wait, after Constantinople fell, there was still the Empire of Trebizond which fell as late as 1461. But wait, there was the principality of Theodoro, that fell only in 1475. But wait, there was despotates of Epirus and Morea, and Vonitsa, the last byzantine stronghold of Epirus fell as late as 1479 AD, thus marking the official end of the last roman remnant state, 2232 years after the founding of Rome.

Another topic where a lot of oversimplification occurs, when trying to understand the transformation of the late roman empire towards the middle ages, is the topic of the decline of paganism, and the simultaneous rise of Christianity. We can often read or hear things like: Constantine, after winning the battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, made Christianity the dominant religion of the empire, and in 394 AD, emperor Theodosius would ban Paganism, so that not long afterwars, Paganism all but ended. As is the case with the oversimplification of how the western roman empire ended, where we saw that actually the date of 476 AD is only one of multiple possible dates for the fall of the western roman empire, or where we saw that the city of Rome even experienced some sort of golden period after the supposed fall, here too, we shall see that many oversimplified statements are circulating around on the internet.

It is commonly taught that the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, a notion that is very oversimplified. In reality, not much changed in 476, and the Western Roman Empire was by that time only an empire by name, and the emperor did not hold real power any more. But when the last emperor was deposed, nothing changed for Rome. Rome did not suddenly turn into a field of ruins. In fact, by that time, Rome still had 2 to 300,000 inhabitants, and despite having been sacked three times in the fifth century, in 410 by the Visigoths, in 455 by the Vandals and in 472 by Ricimer's barbarian soldiers, the city recovered every time, and many of the damages were actually repaired by the urban prefects. Yes, urban decay was starting, especially in the outer lying parts of Rome, but the inner core was well maintained and repaired even after 476. Rome would have looked still very magnificent even after it supposedly fell. Only after 536 did the city start to deteriorate fast, when the Gothic wars devastated the city, reducing the population to 30,000 and utterly destroying anything that was left of the old roman aristocracy and institutions.

What would it have been like to live in those dark times, and what could we have witnessed, if we would have a time machine and could travel back to that fascinating but also frightening epoch, where a whole civilization fell?

It seems that there is a trend nowadays of whitewashing history. Suddenly the dark ages were not so brutal after all, instead it actually was a quite pleasant time. Or the germanic invaders, who caused the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, were actually really friendly guys, they just were poor, innocent refugees, who peacefully settled on the Lands of the Western Roman Empire. Well, unfortunately, the archeological evidence of giant, brutal battles between the Romans and the germanic invaders, as well as the contemporary sources, do not confirm that rosy picture, in fact in many cases, the opposite seems to have been the case. Countless cities in Gaul and Spain were brutally sacked, many Romans led into captivity, and many killed. The Vandals were especially brutal in their conquest of Africa, as attested by contemporary historians. The narrative of a peaceful settlement of the Germanic invaders on roman land tells us more about modern ideological trends and our wish that all refugees are per definition super friendly, than it does tell us about what actually transpired in these dark times.

It is commonly taught in school that Rome fell in 476 AD. This is wrong. The last legitimate Western Roman Emperor actually lived until 480, and then the city of Rome itsel continued unchanged from this event, and so did all Roman institutions. Only the Gothic wars some 60 years later actually ended the glory of Rome and destroyed most roman institutions and infrastructure of Italy. But even then Rome didn't end, because the Eastern Roman Empire continued for almost another 1000 years, and this empire, better known as the Byzantine empire, was actually the legitimate continuation of the Roman Empire. We can thus see, that saying Rome ended in 476 is a gross oversimplification, and in fact, the Roman way of life continued for 60 more years in the West, and for 1000 more years in the East.

Rome was founded in the year 753 BC. The age of kings lasted until around 500 BC, then Rome was a republic for almost 500 more years, until then the Roman Empire was established in 27 BC. The empire split into multiple parts in 284 AD, the split became final in 395 AD, when an Eastern and a Western have was permanently established. The Western part dissolved in the course of the fifth century AD, but the east continued for another 1000 years. Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire fell in 1453, but some roman city states survived. The despotate of Morea fell in 1460, the roman remnant Trebizond in 1463, the principality of Theodoro in 1475 and the despotate of Epirus as late as 1479. Thus, Romen history officially ended, and so it spanned an incredible length of 2232 years.

There are many reasons that make the fall of the roman empire one of the greatest tragedies of human history. From the lost marvellous and beautiful architecture of antiquity with its splendorous temples, statues, impressive domes, large baths, and impressive imperial Fora. To the lost works of many great philosophers of ancient greece, whose works were held in many great libraries throughout the empire. To the loss of surprisingly advanced technologies of science and engineering. In this video we are going to explore the most advanced roman technologies that were in use in the time of the roman empire, which were lost when the Imperium Romanum fell and had to be rediscovered many centuries later.

There were many good roman emperors, and of course we immediately think of Marcus Aurelius, or Trajan or Augustus, or the others of the five good emperors of the 2nd century. While these were all indeed great emperors, I have a personal favorite, because without him, the Roman Empire might have fallen already in the 3rd century AD. I am talking about Aurelian. During those days, there was constant civil war and barbarian invasions threatened the Empire on every front. Aurelian defeated the Alemanni, the Goths, the Vandals, the Juthungi, the Sarmatians and the Carpi and thus secured the borders of the empire. He reconquered the splitaway Palmyrene empire in 273, and then he reconquered the splitaway Gallic Empire in 274. He also was responsible for building the giant walls of Rome, that still stand in parts to this day, and he introduced a monetary reform in order to stop the devaluation of the roman currency, which had created huge economic problems. Thus, at least for me, he is the best emperor because he saved the Roman Empire from a premature collapse.

People often imagine a world in which Rome didn't fall, as a super futuristic cyberpunk world, in which our technology is 1000 years further ahead. But that is based on the assumption that technological progress would have just continued uninterrupted. If the timeline had deviated in 60 AD, with Heron of Alexandria going a step further and inventing steam engines, then yes, our world would look vastly different now, and we might live in a futuristic romano-cyberpunk world. But if the timeline would deviate a lot later, say with Majorian achieving to save the Western Roman Empire in 461 AD, then this does not automatically imply that there would have been immediate technological progress. In fact, technology might have developed at a similar pace as in our timeline, because a late surviving Western Empire would have been quite static and stable, more akin to the Eastern Roman Empire of our timeline, and that empire was not technologically far ahead of the others. So the question then fundamentally becomes when and how the timeline would deviate from ours, because that would determine how different that alternate world where the Roman Empire survives would look.

What is the single most important event, which lead to the Fall of the Western Roman Empire? Well, there are many different possibilities here, but I am going to argue that there is one event of special importance that could be called the beginning of the end for the western roman empire, namely the crossing of the Rhine in 406 AD by a coalition of many different germanic tribes. This event would lead to a devastating chain reaction of further negative events, which would culminate in the fall of the western roman empire 70 years later. Let us then examine how it could come to such a disaster, and why most attempts for damage control failed, and also what consequences this momentous event had, on the western roman empire after that fateful year of 406 AD.

We have already answered the question why the Eastern Roman Empire survived longer than the Western Roman Empire, but that doesn't explain why the East survived so incredibly long, despite being attacked basically all the time from all sides. Well, the answer can be essentially boiled down into one single word: Constantinople. That city was designed as an impregnable fortress, and we can really thank the strategic location of the city, being surrounded to three quarters by water, with port access, so that during sieges, the population could still receive provisions by sea. And of course the ingenious defensive design of the Theodosian land walls. These walls were really a bulwark and made it basically impossible for any attacking army to sack the city. Many attacking armies tried to take the city and failed, in fact from 378 to the final fall in 1453, Constantinople was besieged unsuccessfully an incredible 21 times, 21 times where Constantinople proved to be an unimpregnable fortress. And this was the strength of the Eastern Roman Empire, because had Constantinople had a layout like Rome, then the Eastern Roman Empire would have probably fallen already as soon as 626.

With all the reasons for the Fall of Rome, one big reason is strangely often overlooked, namely the damaging deeds of one single man: Flavius Ricimer, the supreme general of the Western Roman Empire. In a time where the Western Roman Empire faced countless problems, from germanic invasions, to endless civil wars, the empire would have needed a powerful, unifying, benevolent person. Instead, it got Ricimer. He killed the last best hope of the Western Roman Empire, namely the emperor Majorian, who had almost managed to restore Western Rome. It is speculated that he had the next emperor killed because he was dissatisfied with him. In 468 then, he likely sabotaged a united Eastern and Western Roman effort to reconquer Vandal Africa, by probably killing the able commander Marcellinus, who would have been instrumental in this operation. Afterwards he sacked the city of Rome in 472, causing tens of thousands of Romans to die, and killing the Western Roman Emperor Anthemius, who was after Majorian a very able emperor who might have stabilized Rome. After Ricimer then died in 472, he left the Western Empire in such an utterly desolate state, that only four years later, it dissolved.

Ancient Rome was from 150 BC to 455 AD, so for 600 years, the largest city on planet earth, and from 133 BC to around 370 AD, so for 500 years, Rome had an incredible 1 million inhabitants. The first city in Europe to reach such population figures again was London in 1800, so 1430 years after Rome. But how was this possible? Rome only had a comparatively small city area of 20 to 25 square kilometers, yielding a mind boggling population density of 40 to 50 thousand inhabitants per km^2, so it would still rank among the most densely populated cities on earth, even today. How could it achieve this without skyscrapers? The answer lies in the insula, or roman apartment building. Rome had during its peak 46,600 of those buildings, and each one housed around 20 people on multiple stories. The height was at some point 8 stories, until they were restricted to 5 or 6 stories, because too many of them had collapsed. And this is in essence how ancient Rome achieved 1 million inhabitants.
