Why are there no statues of some, nay, even most of the late Western Roman Emperors? It is as if after Valentinian III, the statues suddenly just stop, but even before that, both the number and quality of statues that have been found, seems to have dropped dramatically. There are simply no statues of Petronius Maximus, of Avitus, of Majorian, Libius Severus, Anthemius, Olybrius, Glycerius, Julius Nepos or Romulus Augustus! It is as if suddenly the emperors just stopped to have any statues made of them. So what had happened? Let us then try to understand why there was suddenly such a lack of Roman statues after some point in the 5th century AD.
