My Blacksmith Husband Made a Big Axe for a Tournament Prize | And Then Had to Play With It
This is a 15th century German great axe that is a prize for an upcoming SCA tournament in the Middle Kingdom. This was a "common" medieval weapon (as opposed to a knightly weapon). Not that a knight would not have owned such a weapon, but the knightly battle axe was constructed differently (it was constructed to imitate a poleaxe). Commoners in Germany were well-armed, but did not carry weapons publicly without good reason, for instance, while traveling or while being part of a criminal hunt.

The axe head is made from high carbon steel and the handle is ash.

How to Draft Blackwork Embroidery Patterns from Holbein's Portraits & Apply to Costuming
Step by step of how I draft early 16th century blackwork embroidery, aka Holbein stitch or double-running stitch, patterns from portraits painted by Hans Holbein the Younger.
❤️ SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO AND WANT MORE ❤️
Hans Holbein the Younger was a European painter, just like his older brother Ambrosius and his father, Hans the Elder. If you hear the term 'Holbein stitch', it is in reference to Hans the Younger. From his friendship with Erasmus, he had a letter of introduction and found himself in England to eventually become a court painter in the court of King Henry VIII of England. Compared to other artists at the time, Holbein painted numerous portraits with blackwork embroidery in them.

Blacksmith Husband Making a Bickern Stake for an Upcoming A&S Class
My blacksmith husband decided he needed a bickorn or bickern stake for an upcoming Arts & Sciences class that he will be teaching. Funnily enough, the two names for this pointed stake actually have different etymologies. "Bickern" is "beak iron", while "bickorn" is "beak horn". They are handy little tools. However, he has always improvised them with drifts or punches held in the vise. Now that he will be demonstrating, he decided to get it together.

This is also one of his first serious uses of the chain holdfast. Works great! But it does make using a sledgehammer rather awkward, having to short-stroke every swing because of the location of the stirrup. Even so, it is a hundred times more preferable to using a one-handed hammer, and makes this kind of heavy work possible alone without power tools.

Historically Accurate Linen and from Which Vendor?
The search for historically accurate linen is an ongoing rabbit hole for me: first, to try to figure out what plant made 16th century linen for embroidered textiles; second, what weight is historically accurate linen; and third, is there a modern store that sells this potential historically accurate linen?

Holbein Stitch is Blackwork Embroidery (a Double Running Stitch)?
Hans Holbein the Younger was an artist from the early half of the 16th century, who became a court painter for King Henry VIII of England. The blackwork embroidery in so many of his portraits were so detailed that this particular type of double-running stitch (also known as Spanish Work) earned the nickname of Holbein Stitch.

Linen vs. Ramie | Which One is Historically Accurate for 16th Century Embroidery?
Ramie is similar and sometimes can be confused with linen (flax). In fact, ramie's nickname is China linen. Both were known in Europe during the Middle Ages. So, which fabric is historically accurate for 16th century blackwork embroidery?
❤️ SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO AND WANT MORE ❤️
Join me as I share what information that I have learned so far about this rabbit hole that I have been going down. For years, I simply purchased my linen wherever I could get it for the best price, not necessarily paying attention to the weight (as long as it said "linen", I was happy). However, I have found that some places may sell ramie (voile), while labeling it as linen.

Holbein Stitch Step by Step Embroidery of 16th Century Pattern
Holbein stitch, also referred to as double-running stitch or Spanish stitch, is a reversible stitch used in early 16th century blackwork embroidery. Follow along step by step as I embroider a flower inside of a braided diamond pattern. Both of these patterns are located on Jane Bostocke's embroidery sampler from 1598, currently at the V&A Museum in London.

I brought some of my blackwork embroidery (aka Holbein stitch or double-running stitch) for my first time entering a Tournament of Arts. I have participated in numerous A&S (arts and sciences) displays, as well as Craftspersons Greens and A&S competitions. However, this was my first TOA.
