This Italian chain pattern is from a 16th century embroidery sampler, located at the V&A Museum in London. This particular pattern is near the top, close to the center of the sampler. There is a variety of artwork from the 16th century that shows women wearing detachable sleeves. So, today's project is to make myself a pair of detachable sleeves to go with the kirtle that I am making. ❤️ SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO AND WANT MORE ❤️ For servants and lower class, I could easily see these sleeves having been made from either linen or wool (probably depending on the temperature outside). Today I am making myself a shift to eventually go with a Viking apron dress! In later centuries, a shift became known as a smock or chemise. It is the layer worn closest to the body to help absorb bodily oils. Danish Viking women preferred plain undergarments, while Swedish Viking women preferred pleats. Neckholes were typically triangular or rounded. In the 16th Century, dress hooks were quite useful for English and Dutch women to hold up their skirts and/or to hold down their partlets. ❤️ SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO AND WANT MORE ❤️ 16th Century historical dress hooks from the Renaissance / Tudor periods typically found in museums were typically made from silver gilt (silver gilded in gold). However, for lower class people who may not have been able to afford silver, then other metals were used (such as brass). ** Fair warning, though, if brass is used. If the metal gets wet, it may discolor the fabric. So, these brass hooks will specifically be used with a belt to hold up the hem of the over-skirt, rather than being permanently attached to the back of a partlet, where it could discolor the fabric over time.
