Xenocortex - AvP2 Custom Map (Complete Playthrough)

Map review:
Xenocortex is a marine based skirmish map built by the collaborative efforts of Windebieste and Psykore. The map was originally a multiplayer map, but a skirmish version was made afterwards for singleplayer. The setting is an underground base overrun with alien infestation and a hive. The difficulty is pretty much fair, although if one is not careful they can easily fall to their death as I did numerous times in the video. There is also two turrets that can be activated to help a the player a bit, but it also spawns a facehugger as a consequence. This is actually one of my favorite skirmish maps in that I really like how the terrain constantly changes from corridors, to ladders, to narrow platforms, to tunnels, etc. Xenocortex is recommended.

Xenocommand - AvP2 Custom Map (Complete Playthrough)

XENOCOMMAND is a classic AvP2 map that takes inspiration from Atari's Missile Command. It is essentially a tower defense-style map and perhaps the most unique map for AvP2 ever in that it truly creates an arcade feel. The premise is that there are three small bunkers each with 3 marines in them (the player is the middle one in the middle bunker). These marines must defend their little bunkers from increasingly difficult waves of enemies. If the enemies manage to strike a base three times, the base is destroyed. It sounds pretty easy, but its actually quite hard. The enemies will typically all focus on the player. If the player's base gets destroyed, they die.
Right from the start the player is treated to a cool, in-game menu to shoot at and select the options. In this menu the difficulty can be adjusted to easy or hard. It should be noted that the author of the map was only able to beat the map on hard once. I've tried both difficulties but I prefer the easy mode, as the hard mode is very frustrating (more on this later). Also in this menu lies a marine selection option, which lets the player select the marines they want in each bunker. For whatever reason, some of the marines have new names. Regardless, the player can shoot them to pick which they want in each position in the bunkers. Each marine has a different weapon, so marine selection could make a crucial difference fending off waves.
Once the game is started, level one will commence with waves of attacking drone aliens. There are ten levels in total. As the levels increase, the number of enemies increases. New enemy types such as praetorians, missile-firing trucks and missile-firing helicopters will also appear. In the tenth level, the boss will emerge. The boss is a queen alien with a mounted missile-firing backpack of sorts. It's ridiculous but great. To help the player combat the increasingly difficult waves, random power-ups will appear that the player can shoot at to get. The power-ups include repairs to the bunker, ammo and new guns.
There are three special power-ups too. The first is exos, which when activated spawns a few exosuits to help fight off the aliens. The second is "cow" (this didn't appear in my gameplay unfortunately), which when activated, it spawns a series of cows being bombed on to the battlefield. The third and best power-up is the nuke. When activated this blows all enemies on the battlefield to hell. It's awesome. It should be noted that there exists at least two versions of this map. The first version is packed in the UMP2 map pack. It is very similar to this version, except it is lacking all the power-ups, has very basic enemies and unfair difficulty on easy or hard.
XENOCOMMAND is one of the best AvP2 maps. Just make sure you play the version with power-ups as the other version isn't as fun. XENOCOMMAND is highly recommended.

Valley of Death is a custom map that takes the original first level of the marine campaign (m1e1) and reworks it to be a singleplayer skirmish map. This is the predator version of the map and it's very hard to beat. Although, it's a bit easier to beat than the marine version of the map. The map starts with the player spawning in a safe garage area to gear up for the onslaught. As soon as the player opens the garage door, there are non-stop chasing aliens that will continuously respawn. The strategy for the player is to keep moving while shooting off the aliens. However, the aliens slowly chip away at the player's health. Therefore, the player must constantly be hitting the ammo boxes, which serve as a health replenishment as well.
Unlike the marine version of the map, where fully automatic guns and the flamethrower excel, the predator's arsenal differs a bit. The spear is useful in fending off multiple aliens, as are the plasmacaster and pred pistol. Although those two weapons run out of energy fairly quick with so many npc enemies on this map. The speargun and netgun don't help much here. The last major weapon at the player's disposal are the bombs which have a high risk in using as it's easy for the player to blow themselves up. Like the marine version of the map, there are several traps the player can trigger to destroy the aliens such as the explosive barrels on the bridge and the blown up truck on the hill.
The player can beat this skirmish map by eliminating the three queens that spawn on the map and then reaching the exit. The real trick of this map is to get the aliens and specifically the queen into the traps. I preferred using the bridge with the explosives. This trap deals massive damage and eliminates all the aliens rather quickly.
This playthrough was my first time playing this map with the predator. I died a few times primarily due to either blowing myself up or one of the aliens blowing me up by attacking the explosive barrels while chasing me. Overall, the difficulty here is significantly lower than the marine version of the map due to the predator's ability to run and jump away significantly faster. However, anytime I made a wrong turn and got cornered by aliens, it was game over. This is a nice change of pace for a skirmish map and it's super fun blowing the bridge up over and over. I would highly recommend this map to players who are looking for a challenge.
Note: I'm using some HD textures via Yaji's High Quality Resolution Textures v2 and my Blood n' Guts mod for the gore.

Attacking the aliens in this map is difficult with most of the guns because the player can't afford to miss much. Fully automatic guns and the flamethrower are the go to guns to keep the alien pressure off the player here. In addition to the guns, there is an exosuit and several traps the player can trigger to destroy the aliens. While the exosuit is great in that it allows the player to move twice as fast to evade the aliens, ammo is limited. Also if the exosuit energy is expended too much, the player will come to a stall and be destroyed.
It should also be mentioned that this skirmish map is unique in that it can actually be beaten. There are three queens that spawn on the map. After all three queens or eliminated the player can finish the map by reaching the exit. The real trick of this map is to get the aliens and specifically the queen into the traps. I preferred using the bridge with the explosives. This trap deals massive damage and eliminates all the aliens rather quickly.
This playthrough was my first time playing this map. I died quite a bit because I didn't know where the power ups were located. Once I became accustomed to the map, things got easier. However, anytime I made a wrong turn and got cornered by aliens, it was game over. This is a nice change of pace for a skirmish map and it's super fun blowing the bridge up over and over. I would highly recommend this map to players who are looking for a challenge.

Under The Hunters Moon - AvP2 Custom Map Campaign (Complete Playthrough)

Under the Hunter's Moon (UHM) is a massive campaign loosely based on the 2004 Aliens vs Predator film. In UHM, the player controls a predator and is accompanied by two predator npcs who can be issued basic commands of holding position or following the player. The beginning of the campaign starts off at the snowy, whaling station. Here the player will face a few human npcs. Once the player enters the tunnel, the player will encounter the underground pyramid. Upon entry, the rest of the campaign will occur in the pyramid among its various rooms and chambers.
The best part of the map has to be the pyramid itself. While the entire campaign is textured to look very much like the movie, the pyramid contains many moving parts and traps. Many of the traps have an Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider feel to them. However, some traps can be a bit too harsh, such as solid floors that suddenly break dropping the player into a pit of spikes. There are also many traps that are triggered via pressing the wrong switch or walking in the wrong path. Some traps will trigger environmental hazards, while others will spawn aliens to attack the player. The enemies in the temple are nearly all aliens, minus a few human npcs that are carrying plasmacasters. Like in the AvP movie, the predators are attempting to retrieve their weapons and continue their hunt. So the player will face similar mission objectives in UHM.
Even though UHM is a campaign, it is also a mod in that it brings some new weaponry and models. The coolest addition in my opinion is the shuriken replacing the smart disc. In fact, my AvP movie electrovision skins (the green aliens in the vision mode) are included in this campaign too and they look great with the redone vision mode. However, much of the predator's weaponry is missing from the whole campaign. This may be a design choice to limiting the weaponry to the predator weapons as seen in the AvP film.
While I love a lot of this campaign, I have some major gripes with it as well. UHM is by FAR the most difficult campaign/map (minus the first level) ever made for AvP2. I appreciate difficult maps, but the challenge here is excessively difficult at times to the point at which it becomes totally unfair to the player. My playthrough took a little over two and a half hours. I probably cut about 15 minutes of wandering around trying to figure out what to do. Many times in the campaign there is no indication or hint as to where to go. Some walls that must be broken, look like normal dirt and one wouldn't know that these walls have to be destroyed to pass if not randomly attacking everything.
Although my biggest frustration lies in the alien npc ai. The aliens are VERY headbite-happy in UHM. They will even headbite while pouncing in mid-air. This can actually be quite a fun challenge, but the player's weaponry is limited. To deal with multiple instant-killing aliens the player should use long range weaponry such as the plasmacaster. However, the energy sift (tool for replacing energy to use said plasmacaster) is omitted from the campaign. Thus, ammo is extremely scarce and the player is forced to use a lot of melee. Predator melee is a LOT weaker against insta-kill, headbiting aliens. Predator healing is also omitted. So the player must quick save often hoping to have enough health to finish the map. After each map the players health and ammo is restored to maximum. The only way the player can heal is finding the rare secret pool to take a dip in. I found only one in my playthrough.
There are parts in the campaign where aliens will infinitely spawn. Even if the player kills a dozen aliens in a row, they keep spawning until eventually overwhelming the player. The parts that have infinite spawns are sometimes traps, whereas other times they aren't and are forcing the player to run to safety. If the player encounters the queen, this type of event will occur, except the aliens that spawn are 100% invincible. This is an intended trap (it is subtlety mentioned in the readme file) but I forgot and quick-saved after triggering the trap. Thus, I was entirely screwed. I realized there was a way around the trap by leading the invincible aliens into lava, but they never died and just kept screaming while stuck.
I should also mention that early in the campaign the ally predator npcs would collapse to the ground after getting injured/attacked by aliens. Later on towards the end of the campaign, one of the same predators would instantly die every time he was attacked. This was extremely frustrating, bordering on 007 protecting Natalya frustration.
UHM as a whole is pretty great. It has great presentation and a lot of content. I really think it needed some balancing with the ai, or at least a boost of the player's weaponry. If one can look past the frustrating moments, there is a lot to enjoy here.

Trooper Style Skirmish is a singleplayer skirmish map for the marine against waves of aliens. You have three marine teammates that will either follow you around or hold their ground upon selecting them. Once you open the ammo boxes within the compound, the alien waves will commence. There seems to be about 5 waves with increasing difficulty that will loop after each other. The map is great, but it would be great if the difficulty continued to increase past the praetorian wave. I highlight all the initial waves in the video, but then skip ahead to some other tough waves. I eventually quit the map as the waves never became overwhelmingly difficult nor did my player die.

Map review:
Timebomb is one of the best horror based singleplayer custom maps out there. The concept of the map is simple; you are stuck in a spooky subway with a bomb set to go off in five minutes (once you walk past the red laser wires). There are two ways to complete the map. The first is making it to the apc, while the second is defusing the bomb itself.
While it is a short map, it is quite excellently made. It has a very creepy atmosphere with a ton of custom textures, skins and sounds for added effect. The added tension of the bomb going off makes it even better. Unfortunately, Artalavista left one missing texture in the map that sticks out at the start on a door. However, this doesn't ruin the map at all. I highly recommend this one if you enjoy the scarier AvP2 maps.
