How should we structure our workouts?
How should we structure our workout?
There are many different approaches, but I like to prioritize the exercises that require the most skill, strength, and power.
After a good warmup, our athletic ability USUALLY diminishes throughout the workout (then we heal and come back stronger!)
The good news is that not all of our workout needs us to be at maximum ability. Endurance and muscle can largely be built by pushing hard.
So a sample layout might be:

Warmup Phase:
-Dynamic stretching
-Easier versions of main exercises
-General warmup (jumping jacks, running in place, etc)
Phase 1:
-Explosive movements (clapping pushups, explosive squats, etc)
-Skill work (handstands, lever training, etc)
-Partial ROMs (half rep one arm pullup, etc)
Phase 2:
-Compound key movements done to near failure.
Phase 3:
-High rep endurance work
-Cardio
Cooldown Phase:
-Static stretching
-Shaking muscles loose

Joints hurt during exercise? Try this!
If exercising hurts your joints, isometrics are an effective, simple way to train your body. The lack of movement allows you to use greater pain-free force than you normally would - building more strength and muscle!
Isometrics can build muscle, by the way. There's no reason they can't. The studies that show lack of hypertrophy usually have very low-intensity exercises that wouldn't build much muscle even if they were dynamic. OR they are done at such low volume that the metabolic stress required is not present.
I like combining isometrics with full range of motion at lower intensity. Sometimes MUCH lower intensity if needed!
However, some people are unable to do reasonably do full ROM even when heavily assisted. Start with what you can and work your way up!
Take your time. Patience matched with consistency can yield great long term results!

You CAN do pushups... in better video quality.
I JUST uploaded this video, so no updates yet! Here's the information:
1.) Find a pushup variation you can do competently with good form.
2.) Practice this variation until you hit the Goal standards. Do 2-3 Sets once or twice a week.
3.) When you're able to hit the goal standards, move on to a harder variation.
Progressions:
Wall Pushups: 3 Sets of 50
Incline Pushups: 3 Sets of 40
Advanced Incline Pushups: 3 Sets of 35
Knee Pushups: 3 Sets of 30
Full Pushups!
