Choose the Right Climbing Rose
Picking the right climbing rose for your garden can be a bit overwhelming with so many great climbers and ramblers to choose from. In this video, I'll highlight some of the most popular and sought-after varieties of climbing roses, including some from David Austin, others from Kordes and Meilland. I'll also discuss the basics of how to train them in the landscape.

Retirement
I've been working on a plan to escape my day job so that I can farm and garden full-time. It's finally happened: last week I worked my final shift as a perennial grower, and now I'm taking on the challenge of making my farm work financially and as a lifestyle. Wish me luck!

How Much Light Do Cuttings Need?
When you propagate plants using the cutting method, it's important to give special attention to the growing environment: light, temperature, air movement and humidity. In this video, I'll focus on light. The new cutting has limited access to moisture, so can't handle the same intensity of light as the "mother" plant, at least until it begins to root. One good way to get an idea of how much light you need is to use a light measuring app on your smart phone. It may not be very precise overall, but it can at least give you a comparison between the light levels in various locations.

Farm Tour: Veggies and Flowers feat. Serina from @YouCantEatTheGrass
I was fortunate enough to connect with Serina and Ian at Red Roof Family Farm in Kelowna BC - a few hours inland from my own farm location. On their farm they produce a wide variety of vegetables and also cut flower. They feature these growing challenges and successes on their own channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/YouCantEatTheGrass
Serina was kind enough to give me a quick tour and answer some of my questions about the business. Their generosity and openness is much appreciated.

Why Grow Miniature Roses?
Mini roses are in a class of their own! Tough, relatively hardy, fast to rebloom, and if you choose carefully, you can fit more color into less space. I've added 20+ miniature roses to my personal collection this year, and in this video I'll show you some of the ones that are performing well (even now, at the tail end of my season).

Skin a Greenhouse: Why and How?
If you've ever wanted a larger greenhouse or polytunnel, this video will give you some insights into the kind of job it is to cover the greenhouse with poly. I'll also discuss some of the advantages of growing plants in the greenhouse. The extra control over the growing environment can allow for an early start to the season in your nursery business, and can help you to produce better quality plants faster.

Pruning Tree Limbs Properly (Cordless Chainsaw)
When you cut a branch from a tree, be careful to do it the right way - first thing is to relieve the weight of the branch. This means cutting further away from the trunk as your first cut. In this video, I show you how to make those first couple of cuts, and I also discuss the use of pruning sealant (or rather, advise not to use it!).

6 Methods for Rose Propagation
Growing roses from cuttings is a great way to multiply plants (for free, if you don't count your own efforts in the cost!). In this video, I'll give you an overview of 3 kinds of rose stem cuttings, as well as three other common methods of rose propagation: layering, grafting and suckering.
I have some older videos that go into some of the methods in detail:
Semi-hardwood: https://youtu.be/211r10Jj_OY
Hardwood: https://youtu.be/nLgSxBufENw
Suckers: https://youtu.be/UKm1EgIRx-M

Growing a Moss Garden
A friend of mine is building a new moss garden in a ferny woodland area of his garden. I got a chance to look at this area early in development, just after he cleared away the ivy, lamium and other non-native plants. One approach to making a moss garden would be to apply a "moss milkshake" or buttermilk to surfaces, but from what I've researched, the better method is to "seed" the area with moss harvested from the local area. In this quick video I'll have a look at some of his new garden focal points and the work he's done so far.

It's August: Stop Pruning Your Hydrangeas (northern hemisphere)
Wondering when to prune your hydrangeas? At the time I'm shooting this video (August) I'm going to throw up a caution on timing. Many hydrangeas set flower buds on older wood - so the mopheads, the lacecap, oakleaf and climbing groups will lose flowering potential with a late summer prune. You can still prune to remove dead, diseased or damaged stems or to correct major structural problems with your shrub. Other than that, it's maybe better to wait until the following spring comes and goes, and then prune after flowering.

What's Eating my Roses? Holes in Leaves/Buds/Flowers
If you notice chewing damage on your rose, you may wonder what's eating your plant? Let's have a look at those holes in rose leaves. Careful inspection may reveal the culprit, and in this video I'll discuss some of the usual suspects: deer, rabbit, leafcutter bees, rose slug sawfly larvae, slugs & snails, Japanese Beetle, Rose Chafer and Rose budworm.

Software for Selling Online

From Cutting to Planting: Full Propagation Timeline
How long do you have to grow a cutting until it's ready to sell or plant in the garden? I've put together this video to explain the full timeline and stages to propagating from cuttings, based on my own local climate. Peat and Sphagnum for Growing Plants
Peat is not my primary potting medium - but I do use it for some propagation. As an ingredient in a soilless potting mix, peat does a wonderful job of holding moisture. When mixed with lime, a wetting agent and the appropriate size of perlite for the use, the resulting potting soil supports fast growth for annuals, tropicals, succulents, veggies, herbs and a wide range of other plants. Here I'll also discuss the ecological debate around the harvesting of peat from bogs (focusing on the industry in Canada). Yes, there are concerns around sustainability, but that's true of just about every natural resource in Canada or the world. To me, it doesn't make sense to target the peat harvest as a problem.
Here's the link to the article I mentioned on the Canadian Wildlife Federation Site: https://cwf-fcf.org/en/news/articles/for-the-love-of-peat_resource.html

Grow a Climbing Rose in a Pot
Yes, you can grow climbing roses in pots, so long as you manage all of their needs. A larger container is better - helping you to keep a stable soil temperature and consistent moisture/fertilizer. In this video, I'll show you some good climbers to grow in a pot on your patio or deck.

Pull up Cuttings to Check, or Leave Them Undisturbed?
It's well intentioned advice: "Leave the cuttings undisturbed - you'll damage the young roots!". My view is a bit different. I frequently check young cuttings in my propagation area for all sorts of things: leaf condition, new shoots, moisture and temperature. I also pull up my cuttings to inspect the base for the formation of callus, roots or early signs of rot. I find it useful to get early feedback on my cutting methods and growing conditions. Yes, I advise restraint once the cutting begins to "pull back" with young roots, but even then I'm pretty quick to tip a plant out of its pots to check if its rooted to the side. Are you a "hands-on" propagator? Or are you patient an well-behaved?

Alfalfa Tea for the Garden
Alfalfa tea is a liquid extraction of some of the nutrients and organic compounds in alfalfa - applied in the garden or in a plant container it provides relatively balanced nutrition to plants. Here I describe a simple mix: alfalfa and water for around 24 hours. Some recipes are much more complicated, including additional nutrients sources and organic additives, a fermentation stage, and even aeration. I'm not convinced that a tea (aerated or not) provides additional benefits in comparison to a direct application of alfalfa pellets to the soil. Here's one article discussing the science on compost tea: https://s3.wp.wsu.edu/uploads/sites/403/2015/03/compost-tea-2.pdf Here's one more summary https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2019-08-14-compost-tea-miracle-product-or-snake-oil I found another study where alfalfa tea applied at different rates did improve root growth - and more was better: but isn't this what we would expect? More nutrients should certainly help in growth (especially in a deficient soil) but I'd expect it tow work equally well with the addition of alfalfa directly or even with conventional fertilizer.
