How a Professional Grower Selects Pots & Trays
Let's talk about nursery pots & trays. Different size & shapes of pot may more useful for a particular plant or stage of growth. In this video I'll first discuss the effect of pot height on water (and thus air) holding capacity of your potting mix. Next, I'll talk about the practical differences in using square or round pots/trays. I'll also discuss material (mainly plastic) and overall soil volume.
Here's the link to that University of California article on soil porosity & pot height: https://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=29390

Can Your Bird Feeder Do All This? Netvue Birdfy Feeder Cam #netvuebirdfy @Netvue
I enjoy making space for all sorts of wildlife in my garden, but I've never been much of a bird-watcher. Maybe this wireless Feeder Cam from Netvue could help to get me started in the hobby! It connects to my WiFi network and then makes all the video clips of birds visiting the feeder available right on my cell phone. What's more, it uses artificial intelligence to offer guesses at the ID of the birds in the footage. The video quality is really decent, the hardware is solid, and I like the interface a lot! I can launch the app at any time for a live view of the camera. You can even opt for notifications.
I'm reviewing this product because it was provided free for evaluation by the supplier, but they haven't paid me any fee or asked for any control over the contents of the review.

5 of my Favorite Garden-Related YouTube Channels
Here's a video summary of some of the YouTube Channels I subscribe to, and am happy to watch as time allows:
Olga Carmody https://www.youtube.com/c/OlgaCarmody
HortTube with Jim Putnam https://www.youtube.com/c/HortTubewithJimPutnam
Savvy Dirt Farmer https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc8OLpOSZKXNs3Iw6jSl0rA
Mike Kincaid https://www.youtube.com/c/MikeKincaid79
Off-Grid with Curtis Stone https://www.youtube.com/c/UrbanFarmerCurtisStone
A couple of quick notes on my choices:
First off, I'm under no illusion that these channels want or need my endorsement or approval, and I wouldn't pretend to speak for them. They're just what I'm watching these days, and I figured that my audience might also enjoy them too.
Secondly, there's loads of channels and YouTubers I definitely could have highlighted in the same topic areas. As regards the specialized channels on roses, I already talked about my pics in this video: https://youtu.be/qUYraU6DWM0 so it would have been pointless to list them again. Any list like this is going to be more than a little arbitrary, but if you think I've missed someone worth mentioning, please do feel free to add them in the comments section below!

Fruit Fly & Black Fly Bait Trap Results
I really appreciate these kinds of passive bait traps for pest insects like fruit flies and black flies. Unlike pesticides and sticky traps, these are quite safe and targeted. They also make the grade for ease of use and effectiveness. In this video I'll discuss the results of two inexpensive commercial traps, and also compare the store-bought fruit fly trap vs. my own DIY apple cider vinegar improvised trap.

10 Remarkable Perennials for September and October
Looking for colorful ornamental plants for the fall garden? These 10 perennials will not disappoint in September and October(if you live on the temperate northern half of the globe!). I've featured some of these picks in past videos on perennials, and some are brand new recommendations. Some of these late bloomers could technically be called shrubs (because they're woody to a degree) but in practice I take them down to the ground in spring and grow them as herbaceous perennials. Only one (mirabilis) is tender, and it can be saved by digging the tubers.

Why Are These Roses Misfits?
With so many roses introduced through the years one way gardeners and growers keep them straight is to sort them into "classes" of roses with similar characteristics. You've heard the names "Hybrid Tea", "Floribunda" and "Damask" - but what on earth is a "shrub" rose? Aren't all roses shrubs anyway? It's a catch-all category to lump together the roses that don't fit in with other classes - either because of their characteristics or genetics.
Here's my problem: for these classes to remain relevant and useful, they need to keep up with the needs of the hobbyists. When my customers are asking about David Austin roses, and it's confusing that they're lumped in a class with a hodgepodge of shrubs they share very little in common with. Meanwhile, there are roses with very similar form and genetics offered by other breeders, and they're lumped into different classes.
IMO for the same reasons the Hybrid Tea roses were created as a new class as distinct from the catch-all Hybrid Perpetuals (because they're distinct enough, very popular, and it's useful to talk about them as a different class) the David Austin-influenced roses should be split off from the shrubs.
TBH, I honestly think the Rugosa hybrids and the Hybrid Musks are also "different enough" to warrant their own classes, but I know opinions will vary on the matter.

This One Thing Will Improve Your Cuttings Success
For those who are troubleshooting their plant propagation by cuttings, I'll talk about the one change I made this year that is sure to make your cuttings root faster and at a higher success rate. So often we talk about technique and growing conditions of the cuttings, but in this video I argue that the condition of the "mother" plants (the ones you take the cuttings from) is equally important. In fact, so long as you have the propagation basics down, preparing your mother plants with a little extra TLC might be the easiest way to improve your results.

Breed Your Own Rose: Hybridization in 4 Steps
To hybridize a rose is a simple matter, but it does take a little bit of planning and preparation. In nature, roses are cross-pollinated by bees - but for controlled breeding, you will need to collect the pollen yourself and transfer it to your chosen "mother plant" (seed parent) without interference from those same bees. With a little care, this can be done over the course of 3 days or so, then it's just left to waiting for seeds to develop and germinate as normal. In this video I'll go through rose hybridization step-by-step at an amateur level.
I mentioned the Rose Hybridizers Association Forum, and here's the link: https://rosebreeders.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=2

When to Deadhead Lavender and Other Growing Tips
Cutting the fresh flowers from your lavender plants can provide a number of benefits: obviously, it's nice to have the cut stems for culinary use, fragrance or floral display, but a moderate prune after blooming can result in another flush of flowers, and also improve the quality and extend the life of your lavender plants. In this video I'll quickly discuss deadheading of lavender and then also give some other general growing an planting tips as I dig in my new lavender bed.

Plants for Texture (New Garden Design)
This design is focused on texture of foliage and flowers. It is the second of 8 "themed" gardens on our farm that we're using to show both a wide variety of plants, but also different design considerations: color, texture, symmetry, nature, patio, structure, fragrance and movement. The videos can be taken in any order (or stand-alone) but the first video I made for this series is linked here: https://youtu.be/8YUauVpGgPM

12 Roses You Can Propagate Without Breaking The Law
Here are my 12 choices for roses you can propagate by cuttings without having to worry about patents. They also happen to be great roses that perform well on their own roots (don't need to be grafted). For background, you may have seen plant tags that say something like "Unlicensed Propagation Prohibited" on newer releases of roses and other plants. That's because a rose breeder/introducer is given granted 20 years of exclusive rights to propagate that plant.
There are, however, many thousands of fantastic roses that were never patented or where the patent has expired. They form the backbone of the offerings at my small nursery, and there's no reason individual gardeners shouldn't try out some cuttings of their own!

Finding a New Home for This Lonely Duck
This cute little black duck was the survivor a coyote attack on our farm, and as you'll see from the footage, she doesn't like to be alone. She's taken to following humans around the farm and visiting the neighbors when we're not handy. Planting the Color Garden
I'm choosing plants and designing some themed gardens for our retail nursery, and this one is called the "Color Garden" - with plants choses for colorful flowers and foliage over a long season. I'll fill the gaps with annuals, but for now the focus is on establishing the shrubs and perennials. I may be a professional grower, but when it comes to garden design, I'm still just an amateur following the basics: taller plants to the mid and back, odd numbered groupings where possible, and with (some) attention to spacing for the final size of the plants. Anyhow, we're always happy to take suggestions, and soon I'll be moving on to the "Texture Garden" for the next 12 ft of the border.

Our Plant Nursery. How the Business Looks in Year 1
We've been growing and selling plants on a small scale for several years, but this is the first season since we took the plunge and opened our backyard plant nursery for retail business. It's taking some time and effort to build an inventory of plants and to attract customers. In the meanwhile, we're working on the flow and presentation of the property. In part, our efforts have been guided by viewer feedback on previous design tours:
https://youtu.be/goJt79jW09s
I can't even express how thankful Lisa and I are for the advice and feedback we've received from viewers. And now we have 8 more gardens to "populate" so I'm nudging you for suggestions!

Deadhead 6 Types of Roses (including Knockout)
Deadheading roses can encourage faster rebloom - and who doesn't want more flowers? In addition, it can help to maintain your roses in better shape and condition if you approach it with the right method. In this video, I'll go through the various ways to deadhead the different types of roses: single flowering like the hybrid teas, cluster flowering like the floribundas, climbers, old garden roses, knockout roses (landscape roses) and rugosa roses.

Canada's Secret Garden: Summerland
Here's a video of my trip to Summerland Ornamental Gardens in the Okanagan Valley. This public garden has been built and tended over the course of a century, but is still basically unknown outside of the local community. In this tour, I'll talk to Bonnie and Connie, volunteer directors of the Friends of the Garden, about the joys and challenges of maintaining this unique garden in an unforgettable setting.

Reblooming Old Garden Roses
Old garden roses have unrivalled fragrance, excellent flower form, graceful habit and are proven survivors. Some gardeners value their charm, history and romance as much as their scent - but there's one hesitation: many antique roses only bloom once in the season. It's a glorious flush of blooms, but most people would understandably prefer an extended bloom season. In this video, I'll go through some of the old roses that offer the best of both worlds, fragrance and charm, but also bloom repeatedly:

1:29 Portland Roses
2:54 Bourbon Roses
4:11 China, Tea and Noisette Roses

Professional Watering Tips: Plants in Pots & Containers
In this video I'll share what I learned about watering plants in pots & containers as a professional grower.
Here's the full story of the watering "contest":
The owner of the nursery where I worked (John) had bought a watering tunnel, which did pretty much what you saw in the first pot. It attached to the end of the conveyor at shipping, and absolutely drenched the plants before we were to load them on racks. You saw how much water runs off the pot after the quick soaking. My guys on the load dock were pretty irritated by the "water park" this was creating in the loading area. Everyone was going home soaked!
The owner (who BTW is a great guy!) had 3 reasons for insisting on this: 1) he had paid for the watering tunnel, and wanted to see it used, 2) he thought it was the best solution, and 3) he didn't have to lift the pots on the loading dock!
The hero of this story is Paula, who was my boss at the time. If she thought the watering tunnel was doing a great job, I'm sure she would have gone along with the owner. What she saw was that it was leaving loads of water splashing all over the load dock, but she was still getting complaints from customers about dry plants.
So she challenged John to a contest. She asked him to prepare a couple of flats his way (through the watering tunnel) and also prepared a couple of flats her way (by watering the plants several times while still on trailers before labelling). She made good an sure that all pots were dry at the beginning of the trial. A day later, they went back and checked the pots.
John scratched his head at the results, but was gracious enough to remove that wretched watering tunnel the following day.
Morals of the story:
1) Don't be afraid to challenge upwards when you can back it up
2) Don't bet against the shipping manager when it comes to shipping plants!

20 of the Most Fragrant Roses
I've selected 20 of the most fragrant roses to put in your garden - renowned for their various perfumes, but also chosen for a diversity of flower colors, forms, growing habits and bloom cycle.
I mentioned I would link to the David Austin guide on rose fragrance: https://eu.davidaustinroses.com/pages/rose-fragrance-guide
There are more than a few ways gardeners can describe the scent of their rose: sweet, Damask, fruity, spicy, myrrh, citrus, tea and musk. I've given some examples for most of these. One important note: not everyone can agree about the character if the fragrance of a given rose. That's biological, I'm told, with some people being far more sensitive to some scents over others. So the real test about the "best" rose perfume is in the nose of the beholder, so to speak.
