Secret Ingredient: Natural Fungicide Spray
I've added a new biopesticide to my rotation. What's that? In combination with baking soda (and other potassium salts used as fungicidal treatments) chitosan was shown to increase effectiveness dramatically. In this video, I'll show you how I've formulated my spray application and discuss the reasons I'm starting this mix into my rotation for foliar disease control (mainly).
Here are links to two of the studies I used to help formulate this mix:

Youtube Alternatives: Comparing Video Sites
This video is a comparison between Youtube and it's competitors (such as they are!) Odysee, Rumble and Dailymotion. My honest take on these alternatives to Youtube is a bit underwhelming: none of them are ready to offer a viable option for small creators without some serious growth and change. Odysee and Rumble are about the closest I could come as long-form cempetitors: it's easy to move existing video content onto these sites, and their overall usability is good. However, I also offer a couple of suggestions for changes they'd need to make in order to be truly competitive.

Sharpen Pruners (Bypass Pruners & Loppers)
Whether pruning or for propagation, your plants will benefit from clean, sharp blades. This video will cover basic sharpening, disinfection and tightening adjustment for bypass pruners (secateurs) and loppers, particularly those styled after the Felco models. I use a carbide sharpener because it's fast and relatively easy. I clean with household hard surface cleaners like Lysol or Clorox wipes (but *not* with bleach).

2021 Rose Nursery Successes and Failures
For every win in our small farm business, it seems there's also a failure to be accounted for. While I admit that there's a certain amount of "Fake it 'til you make it" that we engage in while promoting our farm, I also want to be frank about where we've struggled. This year it was the tough balance of trying to give enough attention to the farm while also wrapping up my time at the day job. Some things did fall through the cracks to be sure, and I'm happy to be on the other side of 2021.

Does Size Matter? (and other greenhouse considerations)
It's not just a matter of personal greenhouse envy, size really matters when it comes to performance. In this video, I'll discuss some of the thermal properties of larger vs. smaller structures, and how you can deal with some of the challenges of a smaller greenhouse. I'll also quickly discuss a few of the hazards of DIY and kit greenhouses when it comes to severe weather. It's so important (IMO) to install and brace securely (or hire someone to do it for you)

Preparing for a Cold Snap
We're facing an unusually cold forecast - and my mind goes to how to protect my plants in the greenhouse, the landscape and in containers. Do they need additional protection? In this video, I'll quickly move through my steps to prepare roses and other plants for the weather to come.

Why Won't my Rose Bloom?
If your rose plant doesn't bloom, there isn't just one quick reason to explain why. In general, modern hybrids are "programmed" to bloom as soon as they have the right conditions. In this video, I'll discuss some of the more common reasons roses fail to form flower, or those flowers fail to open.

Get Rid of a Stump Fast
Stubborn old stump, let me introduce you to a nice hot fire! There are plenty of ways get rid of a stump. You could use stump grinder to chip it apart; sounds like fun, but I don't have one of those. You could cut it apart with an axe or a chainsaw. A little labor intensive, but it'll work. Or you can try to rot the stump - not a fast process. I got tired of waiting, and decided to try a modified "burn barrel" technique. This video will show the results.

The Portland Roses: Old Garden Roses
Last in my series of the old garden roses, here's a summary of the Portland Roses. The Portlands are an unusual class because they all descend from one rose of unknown provenance; Duchess of Portland. Later genetic testing puts them as descendants of the Autumn Damask and gallica roses. They were unique amongst the European roses that they reliably rebloom.
Here's my playlist on the different types of roses, including all of my previous videos in this series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQR908v3Cexx92kTIhbTMnePbE0ty7AHa

Is There a Rose Shortage?
There's been a spike in rose demand, but for the reasons in this video, I wouldn't call it a rose shortage. There's a production difference between own-root and bare-root roses that will come into play. The faster production time of own-root roses will help to fill the gap over the short term, and over the longer timeframe I'm quite sure the bare-root suppliers will catch up.

Plant Tags and Signage
If you're selling plants, you'll probably have to spend some time thinking about plant tags, signs and labels. It's kind of a pain, to be honest. In this video I'll talk a bit about how I decided on the tags and signage for our newly opening plant nursery (after years of selling mainly through farmers markets and events). As much as possible, I use free software, existing printers, inexpensive stock, and local printing solutions. I don't expect that my choices are right for every plant business, but I hope you find the discussion useful, and please drop a comment below if you feel like exploring the topic further.

Preserve Old Roses
I've said that "Roses Are In Trouble": https://youtu.be/DYvKY1rP-S8 but what to do about it? Happily, I've heard from rose gardeners around the world who are taking a hand at collecting out-of-trade (or nearly so) roses and propagating them for future generations. The safest spot for any rose is in when it's grown in many gardens!
I said I'd give you some book recommendations: "Classic Roses" by Peter Beales, "A Passion for Roses" Peter Beales, "Roses" by Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix, "Old Roses" by Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix, "Roses" by Orietta Sala. That should give you a start! Here's an Amazon link to help find them:

Groplanner LED Grow Light: For Other Plants Too!
I find that most LED lamps are marketed for a pretty *ahem* specific kind of growing. In this video, I want to take a more general approach. I'll show you the Groplanner O Series 200w bundle, which I think is a highly adaptable lamp for all kinds of growing. I'll definitely be using it for my seedling starting in spring, but in the meantime I can use it for overwintering young plants (cuttings from this season's propagation) and light-hungry indoor plants as the natural light diminishes. I mentioned some coupon codes, and here they are with links to the respective online stores:

Remove Heat from Peppers
For those who can't handle super-hot peppers, this is a fairly quick way to reduce the heat level (amount of capsaicin) from the fruit, and therefore make the pepper less spicy. In this video, I treat an 'Armageddon' pepper (around 1,000,000 scoville) with regular cooking oil and a paper towel to remove some of the heat. Also, a quick flood update (at the end) for those concerned about the farm.

Plant ID Apps vs. Google Lens: Identification Performance Reviewed
This is a comparison between plant ID apps (PlantNet & PictureThis) vs. a more general identification application like Google Lens. I'll go through a number of shrubs and perennials in my fall landscape to see how well the software can match it to the right genus/species.
The app company behind PictureThis offered me 5 premium one-year memberships to give away with this video. No easy way to do it fairly, so it's just the first five viewers who want to give it a try based on comments below the video. Those memberships have now been given away! Overwintering Peppers & Roses: Almost the Same!
Most people wouldn't immediately associate peppers and roses as similar in their overwintering requirements, but think of it this way: they're both perennial flowering shrubs with a long growing season. In containers, they can both be successfully overwintered by pruning them back to a bare framework and held at temperatures where they go nearly dormant. The only major difference is the temperature: rose you can hold in the range of 35F, and can tolerate freezing temperatures. Peppers require a base temperature closer to 50F. Either one can be damaged or killed by long periods below their temperature tolerance, and each one will return quickly to flowering a fruiting the following season once warmer temperatures return.

Epsom Salts, Banana Peels & Other Magic Fairy Dust for the Garden
Should you use Epsom salts for your garden plants? How about banana peels, rusty nails, egg shells, vinegar, raw fish, coffee grounds, biochar, aerated tea - do the magical-sounding claims around these garden amendments make any sense at all? In my view, beginning gardeners are often misled into focusing on a "miracle cure" rather than basic proven horticultural techniques. I don't like to play the debunker, but here are a couple of Youtubers who are pretty good at it:
Robert Pavlis (Garden Myths): https://www.youtube.com/c/Gardenfundamentals1

Oh and here's that link to the NPK's of various organic amendments: http://www.lundproduce.com/N-P-K-Value-of-Everything.html I don't see references, so take with a grain of Epsom salt

Right Time to Prune Roses
If you're wondering when you should prune your rose, the most common advice is "In the late winter or early spring, just as it's coming out of dormancy". The longer answer is: "It depends..." In this video, I'll go through a flowchart you can use to decide if it's the best time to prune your roses.

Under Bench Heat Project: Protecting Our Young Plants from Cold
In this DIY bottom heat project, we used PVC pipe and roof heating cables to put heat under the plant benches in our greenhouse. The results are that we gain around 3.5C/6.3F consistently over the overall greenhouse temperature (which is generally a few degrees above outdoor temperature, at least during the daytime). Our hope is to keep the young roots of newly propagated plants from the damage of deep cold during any uncommonly cool stretches.
While this is primarily intended as cold-weather protection, there's a good chance I'll also use the heat to "wake up" the roses early in the spring, and as overflow space in propagating roses in early summer.

Remedy for Powdery Mildew & Spider Mites: Sulfur
The oldest pesticide known to mankind, sulfur, is amazingly still highly effective to get rid of powder mildew (and other foliar fungus) and spider mites. At the same time, it's virtually non-toxic to animals, plants, and most beneficial insects. In this video, I'll recap some of the qualities of elemental sulfur as prepared for garden use.

Strip Leaves From Your Roses?
Some formal rose gardens strip all the lower leaves from their roses, leaving a "Dr. Seuss" top heavy, "bare knees" look that has become fairly distinctive to the hobby. But is it necessary? In this quick video, I'll discuss the benefits of the removal of lower/inner leaves.

Make Clay from Garden Soil
You can extract clay from home garden soil (dirt) - and the method is easy to understand using the "mason jar" clay soil test. This method is not-so-fast and dirty, but quite easy! It allows rocks, sand and silt to settle out from a soil suspension, then siphons off the "clay water". Given time to settle itself, the resulting layer of clay is relatively pure as shown at the end of my video. Whether this clay would be suitable for pottery, bricks or other uses is beyond the scope of my own knowledge, but fun project nonetheless!
