Cordless Electric Pruning Shears: Worth Using?
This cordless electric pruner was sent to me for evaluation courtesy of Kebtek. Overall, I found the product to be powerful and easy to use, and it held up well over some large jobs. Because of its size, I'm not sure I'd carry it around for casual pruning, but if I have a larger job in mind, I'll definitely use them to save the strain on my hands and wrist.

Why Would a Rose Change Color?
What would you think if your garden rose suddenly bloomed in a different color or shape of flower? There are couple of good explanations of why this could really happen. Some people explain is as "cross pollination" - no, that's not on the possible causes, and I'll explain why.

Grow Lavender in Garden or in a Pot
There's a key difference to growing great lavender in a pot or container: to be successful, you need to pay far more attention to watering. Once established in the landscape, lavender is drought tolerant. However, it relies on an extensive root system to pull moisture from the soil. In a pot, the "reservoir" of soil is far more limited. I also discuss how to prune lavender in the plug/productions stages as well as for a mature plants.

Get Rid of Aphids: Fast and Easy
If you're looking to protect your plants from aphids, you have all sort of allies in the garden: ladybugs, hoverflies, wasps, etc. Sometimes, the damage to your plants is so severe, that you can't wait for beneficial insects to do the job. In this video, I'll survey a few of the less toxic methods of killing aphids.
For a more complete discussion of aphids and their natural enemies, here's my vid on the topic: https://youtu.be/luy-sPWRDTQ

Maintain Colorful Stems: Willow and Dogwood
Brightly colored plant stems can really brighten up the garden. I enjoy the ornamental bark of many trees and shrubs, but the star of my "winter garden" are the willows and dogwoods with their yellow, orange and red stems. To keep the color every year, these shrubs should be pruned down low in the spring. BTW, here's a scene with the resulting shrub: https://youtu.be/n3axUaMXGa4 I missed putting it in.

When Can I Ditch the Day Job (to Farm Full-time)
One of my goals is to take my small-scale farm to the next level and make a real living from it. This video is a discussion of my considerations in taking the side-hustle to full-time. One thing I don't discuss (because it's already like 13 minutes) is that balancing the demands of my day job with the needs of my farm is becoming increasingly difficult. At some point, I do need to make the decision to go one way or the other.

Is Landscape Fabric Worth It?
Weed control fabric (landscape cloth) combined with mulch is a popular method in landscaping - but you may want to give some consideration to the short-term vs. long-term impacts. The duration of weed control may be shorter than you'd imagine - as weed seeds and decaying organic matter accumulate above the cloth. Over time, the cloth does impact the movement of organic matter and soil life through the profile of the soil, so you may end up with all of the negatives (including an ugly, deteriorating layer emerging from your mulch) with very few of the benefits.

Roses are in Trouble
When a rose drops "out of the trade" there's a risk that it also falls out of the hobby. Demographic changes have taken their toll on rose suppliers, concentrating some large portion of sales into "landscape style" roses. Meanwhile, old garden roses and other garden-worthy modern roses are left to individual gardens and hobbyists to preserve.
Here's the link to the Bill DeVor presentation I mentioned: https://youtu.be/1fGsRSW02Vk?t=729
I didn't discuss it much in the video (I was already going long) but I think Facebook special-interest groups are a promising alternative to in-person garden clubs to connect gardeners who share your goals. In Canada (only), we're working together to preserve garden-worthy roses in this group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CanadaRoseExchange

Timed Propagation Mist DIY and Save Money
I prefer to propagate plants from cuttings under timed mist (as compared to humidity domes or "tenting") - the better air circulation can reduce the risks of rot. This DIY project lets you install timed mist at a small fraction of the cost of a professional system. It's a great way for beginners to plant propagation to get some experience with managing mist - without breaking the bank!

Do I Mix My Own Potting Soil?
I don't mix my own potting soil - I used to do it a long time ago, but found it very time and labor intensive. BTW, the soil supplier I mentioned at the front end of the video is Sumas Gro Media: https://www.sumasgromedia.ca Serving BC's lower mainland, Vancouver Island, and into Washington State, I think.

Dark Spots on Rose Stems
Dark colored spots on the stems of roses can be unsightly, but are they damaging? And should you prune them off? The answer should depend on the overall condition and health of your roses, and I suppose also on your own tolerance their appearance. The likely candidates are black spot & botrytis (both are common enough) but it also could be a number of other fungal diseases. The spots may appear red, purple, brown, or almost black - and can remain as small speckles or enlarge to blotches.
Here's a link to the Houzz forum I referenced: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2953107/what-are-these-red-spots-on-my-rose-canes-and-are-they-bad

Rose Pruning the Easy Way
Pruning roses doesn't have to be complicated. In this video I'll prune two example roses, one of them fairly overgrown. I generally start from the base of the rose, thinning out old and congested growth first. When I have a well-spaced framework down low, I can then choose a manageable height and a pleasing shape.

Evaluating Vinegar Uses in the Garden (Sorry, No Miracles Today)
Recommended uses for vinegar in the garden include: weed killer, fungicide, insecticide, animal repellant, rooting hormone, fertilizer, amongst others. Is there any truth to these claims? In this video, I'll go through some of the most common garden "folk remedies" involving vinegar, and evaluate if they make sense:

3 Stages of Growing Seedlings for Beginners
If you're a beginner to starting seeds indoors, I'd like to share the three basic steps: germination, early development, and hardening off. Each stage requires an adjustment to the growing conditions for the best results. Neutralize Wood Ash for the Garden
In response to those who drone on about the risks of applying wood ash to neutral or alkaline soils, I made a quick video to put my spin on the issue. At the recommended rates of application, the dangers of wood ash are greatly overstated IMO, and are easily counteracted by a small application of acidifying elemental sulfur. Elemental sulfur is inexpensive (around $25 for a 50lb bag last I looked) and widely available. For those who may take me to task for recommending a soil amendment without soil tests, I'll say only this: keep it in context - we're talking about a light application of wood ash and sulfur over a large area. In comparison to the wood ash ending up in the landfill, I think it's a decent compromise.

Bordeaux Mixture Preparation: Preventive Spray for black spot & other plant diseases
This is how to prepare Bordeaux mixture at the rate recommended for overwinter (dormant) spraying as a plant disease preventive. If you spray thoroughly on dormant plant, the spray will help to reduce overwintering spores (downy & powdery mildew of grapes, apple scab, etc on orchard crops). I'll use the formula today to reduce blackspot on my dormant roses.
Bordeaux mixture preparation:
For each gallon of water, separately dissolve 6.5 tsp of Copper (II) sulfate and 3 tbsp of Hydrated lime. Stir well, and let sit for 15 minutes. Strain the 2 resulting solutions together into your spray tank.

Get Rid of Fungus Gnats - for Propagation and Houseplants
If you get these little black flies on your houseplants or greenhouse, they're probably fungus gnats - and it's best to wipe them out because the larvae can be damaging to young roots. I find them particularly annoying and damaging for my plants in propagation. In this video, I'll go over three kinds of biological controls to help you get rid of fungus gnats.
