Life Comes FULL CIRCLE — Contemplations 003
Moving back to the country had been on all of our minds for a while, so when my friends and I were able to collectively share our visions with one another, it really got the ball rolling into a forward direction. Now two years later, we have found a place where we can call home. It's surprising how quickly we've gotten back into "step" with what we used to do as children. It's as if being in nature inspires that which brings us immense joy.

WEEDY BED Transformed to Beautiful Garden for MEADOW HOME — Ep. 123
It took several weeks of work throughout the last several months to get this bed to where it is today—and it's still not complete! But at least we've gotten it into a place where it can rival the beauty of the newly renovated (yet still a work-in-progress) Meadow Home, which had been an old nursery office up until two years ago.
This episode is brought to you by Espoma Organic, which is a fourth-generation family-owned and operated company focused on providing gardening products for the home gardener.

Best BULBS on a BUDGET — Ep. 122
Fall is in the air and it'll be time soon enough for fall bulb planting. It's a bit of a patience game, however, because we'll have to wait until spring to enjoy all those blooms. But when buying bulbs, there are ways to be a bit more budget-conscious, so I'll share some of those tips here.

BORING LAWN To DIVERSE POLLINATOR GARDEN — Ep. 121
It's hard to believe that around 10 months ago, this was nothing more than a lawn, but now this pollinator garden is planted up with close to 260 different varieties of plants—many of them native and that provide pollen sources for specialist pollinators, like solitary bees, for example. We'll take you through a meditative tour of this lawn-turned-pollinator haven.

FOOD SECURE: Grow Your Food, Support LOCAL FARMERS — Ep. 118
Having and supporting a local food system has always been important, but that reality came into the general public's attention more clearly during the pandemic when there were intermittent food shortages and supply chain challenges. This encouraged many people—including us—to start focusing on growing food and strengthening the local food system by supporting local growers.
The Finger Lakes area has been a local agricultural hub for some time—producing many of the state's vegetables, fruits and grains. A good portion of the farms here are also organic or biodynamic–making them more resilient to price hikes for petroleum-based fertilizers, for instance, since products like that aren't used in their farming practices. Additionally, when farmers only have to travel short distances (typically within 30 miles) to market their products at the farmers market or local cooperatives, then rising gas prices don't pose as much of a problem. This makes the overall local food system a lot more resilient to larger global issues and political whims.
The Ithaca Farmers Market is an incredible place to experience local food and arts and crafts if you're in the area. Established in 1973, the Farmers Market is a vendor-owned cooperative that is opened year-round. In the summer, that's when you can find a plethora of produce, local victuals and provisions, and crafts and wares.
To find out more about the market, you can visit www.ithacamarket.com and to find other great places to hang out and visit, head over to http://www.visitithaca.com, which graciously sponsored the making of this video.

Our HERBAL & MEDICINAL Cabinet Tour for Medical Preparedness — Ep. 116
One of the first things that we got when we finally got to the new homestead was a first aid kid, because inevitably—injuries, ailments and illnesses happen. Plus we know being out in the country—we're further away from hospitals and ambulances, so the more that we can be self-sufficient as far as medical supplies go—the better off we'll be. We started to not only streamline some of our medical supplies but also organize them so it's easier for anyone at the homestead to find something to help their condition, ailment or injury.
Additionally, we teamed up with Jase Medical—the sponsor of this video—to beef up on our supplies of emergency antibiotics, which we think is also important to have on hand in times of need.
To get your Jase Case and schedule your consultation, head over to: jasemedical.com/flockfingerlakes and you can use the code: FLOCK10 to get $10 off.

LOW-MOW NATIVE LAWN: Success or Failure? — Ep. 115
Back in November 2021, we first seeded a low-mow, native lawn (and then re-seeded it again this spring, May 2022) with a custom mix of native grass seed as an experiment. This is a recap to share some of our initial learnings within that 9-month period. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the results!
Thanks to the sponsor, @American Meadows for helping supply the grass seed mix, which contains Bouteloua gracilis, Bouteloua dactyloides (both warm-season grasses), and Festuca rubra, (a cool-season grass).

20-YR OLD ORGANIC 2.5-ACRE VEGGIE Farm Feeds 100+ People — Ep. 114
We went to tour Muddy Fingers Farm —a 20-year old 2.5-acre diverse veggie farm and CSA (Community-supported agriculture) based in Hector, NY. Liz and Matthew had a dream of building their own farm but it took a number of years to get there. Now 20 years into their operation, they have a 75-person CSA, farm stand, and frequent the farmers markets in the area.
Liz and Matthew recently reached out to the community to help fund some low-income CSA shares, so we were able to put some of the funds we set aside for the community and earmark them to the CSA for that purpose, which you'll find out more about in the film. This is all made possible through viewers like you! So thank you, thank you, thank you. This was matched by our partners over @Espoma Organic (espoma.com), so this is able to fund 10 families' CSA boxes for the whole year.
Find out more about Muddy Fingers Farm and their CSA box program here: https://muddy-fingers-farm.square.site/ and in this video!

FOOD PRICE HIKES and SHORTAGES: A FRAMEWORK for FOOD PRODUCTION — Ep. 110
Earlier in the year we discussed some of our major projects we wanted to accomplish—but food production wasn't one of them. Given the more global, out-of-control issues that nearly everyone faces, including food shortages, price increases, and a devalued dollar—we've decided that we'll get our food production started sooner rather than later. But we can't do it all, so we came up with a 5-point framework for deciding what food crops we'll start growing this year.

When we first came to see the land at Flock, we were both surprised and thrilled to see an assortment of mature trees, particularly all the Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) cultivars.
Though not a tree we would have initially gravitated towards planting in the landscape—after learning more about the Japanese maple, we became enrapt by their four-season beauty, versatility and cultural history. So much so that we started to get more to plant within the landscape. In this video, we'll take you for a tour through our Japanese maples and share tips on selection, growing and care.

3 PRIVATE GARDEN Tours Through Syracuse — Ep. 106
Though I couldn't attend the full annual conference of the North American Rock Garden Society this June, (which was conveniently hosted in Ithaca, NY), I did take up an opportunity to visit three private gardens in Syracuse that gave us a sense as to how a labor-of-love and decades of gardening can transform a land. Though I didn't have a chance to interview the gardeners personally, I put together this compilation to give you some garden inspiration.

Planting a MULTI-GRAFT PEAR — Ep. 105
One of our more special fruit trees that we're planting is a 4-in-1 multi-graft pear. We filled up our orchard area already, however, so we're instead dotting in some orchard varieties like this one in the interstitial area, which has many other fruiting trees and shrubs like serviceberry, aronia, and viburnum, for instance.
Special thanks to our sponsor, Espoma Organic, which is a fourth-generation family-owned and operated company focused on creating superior organic gardening products. You can check out their products at www.espoma.com.

Pay Attention to Your WEEDS. Here's Why... — Ep. 104
Weeds. If you garden, you get 'em! But what are weeds after all? These misplaced plants are often villianized, but can also be intensely useful too.
After creating our orchard berms, we let the first group of errant weeds crop up in the beds so that we could learn from them. What weeds grow where can give you clues as to what may be happening in your garden bed (e.g., soil not well-draining enough? too little nitrogen?).
Additionally, once you take an overall assessment of your weeds, you can decide whether those plants are even a problem for you at all—and sometimes it's just what lens you choose to look through.

ACID-LOVING, EDIBLE GROUNDCOVERS for Front Garden Bed — Ep. 102
Planting season is in full force here at Flock and we're tackling one garden bed at a time. Though the front garden was one of the first gardens we started to officially work on (as far as pulling out some barberry), we didn't really get around to planting it up because we weren't quite sure whether we would be extending the deck on the Common House (and quite frankly—we're still not sure)!
With all the beautiful fruit-producing native plants and pollinator plants in the Shade Garden, we thought we would extend this garden with some more edible groundcovers—namely lingnonberry and cranberry—both which require a more acidic soil.

Planning and Planting the ORCHARD — Ep. 101
We're busy planning, prepping, and planting the orchard—just in time for the spongy (aka gypsy) moths to take over eating their leaves. Waa - waa. But seriously—the orchard is a big step for us as far as future food production goes. We wanted to get the trees and shrubs in because we know they'll take time to increase in size and begin producing fruit. We'll have updates as the seasons progress. And fingers crossed the trees and shrubs survive this plague!

Our LAND USE PLAN Via PERMACULTURE ZONES — Ep. 100
Can't believe it's already the 100th episode, but here we are!
Over a year and a half has passed since we have made our way to Flock, so it's given us some time to traverse, experience, and enjoy the space.
There have been some surprises: When we initially arrived, we didn't think we would "get to" the lower part of the land. But earlier this year, we decided to renovate the old nursery office. That also led to rethinking the barn. One project often seamlessly blends into another. And when you put a little effort in every day—things start to manifest and shape up.
Food production has been on our minds since we got here: but we really needed to concentrate on removing the exotic species like multiflora rose and Japanese honeysuckle that were crowding out the land.
So 1 1/2 years later—here we are; we've started to map out how we would interact and engage with the land. It has been helpful to do land use planning via the lens of "permaculture zones", which we'll describe more at length in this video.
