BEFORE/AFTER Home Renovation with CLAY, LIME and TADELAKT Walls — Ep. 148
For the past year, we've been busy on renovating an old nursery office-turned tiny home that we're calling the "Meadow House." Given some of our choices, it's been a process, but we're really thrilled with how those renovation and design choices are turning out. For one, we took the garish pink, pistachio, and lime green-painted walls and transformed them using earthen products, including clay, lime, and also a tadelakt lime process in the bathroom. We had previously trialed the clay in another old nursery office building, which we'll be turning into a chicken coop—and LOVED the look of it, so decided that we'd do that in the main rooms of the house. But given the humidity of the bathroom, we opted for limestone-based applications, including a wet-use lime process known as tadelakt that had been perfected in Morocco.
We hope you enjoy this process and transformation! We think the "before" and "after" is such a drastic difference!
Thanks to Matteo and Peaches from Cob Therapy http://www.cobtherapy.com/ for assisting us through the process of clay, lime and tadelakt!

Our Projects for 2023: A Look Ahead + Sander Q&A — Ep. 147
Last year around this time we sat down to discuss what projects we would aim to accomplish in one year. Making those broad stroke lists, really help keep us on target with our goals—and also surprise us when we're able to squeeze a bit more out of life. Now that we've fully gotten "stuck in" on the land–with many projects in the works—we have a clearer idea of what we can finish within what time period. Of course, some of that is out of our control–and plans DO change, but we feel up to the task!
Plus, some questions for Sander get answered!

Should You BUY LAND as a GROUP? Here's What to Consider... — Ep. 146
Over two years ago, we decided to go in on land together as a group of friends. It allowed us to not only get a larger slice of heaven but become more resilient, now that we were acting as a more coordinated group. That all sounds hunky dory but the reality is there are a lot of considerations that need to occur before going in on a group purchase.
We've covered some of those topics in the past, but since we get a constant flow of these questions in via email and via the comments, we wanted to put out another video to help anyone interested in this concept think through the process better.

Friends Buy ~90-Acre NURSERY & Turn into HOMESTEAD: 4 YRS in 10 MINS— Ep. 145
It’s nice to start the new year off with reflection and a plan.
Four years ago, we came together as a group of friends to discuss partnering on purchasing some land together—a sort of communal homestead that we would be able to co-work, co-live, and co-create on. At the time, all of us were living in New York City—but we were all originally from the country or a small town and knew we would eventually settle in a small community again where we could commune with nature more.
Two years of what would eventually become nail-biting searching ensued (2018 - 2020), and then towards the tail end of that two year process, we were fortunate enough to find a beautiful piece of earth, which had been a plant nursery for 30 years prior.
This is our story of how we came together and what we’ve been able to accomplish within those two years of time on the land. And a little of what we’re looking forward to in the New Year.
May 2023 bless you with joy, friendship, and journey…
Thank you for watching.

SNOWSHOEING in a Preserve — Ep. 144
It's been brisk these past number of weeks, so we decided we'd head out and enjoy the snow by doing a wintry walk with our snowshoes at the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve, which is a 537-acre preserve opened to the public across all seasons. The Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve spans the mile-wide floor of the Cayuga Inlet valley and stretches up a glacially- steepened hillside where it borders Danby State Forest to the east. You can find out more about the preserve here: https://www.fllt.org/preserves/lindsay-parsons-biodiversity-preserve/.
And if you'd like more information on what to do or where to stay in the Ithaca area, head over to our partner-sponsor's site at: https://www.visitithaca.com/
Also, our snowshoes were awesome. If you'd like to know the brand it's below:

MEDICINAL HERBS for COVID-19 (What CHINA & INDIA Recommend During the PANDEMIC) — Ep. 143
After two family members contracted the latest virus in 2022, I became curious as to what treatments were being offered in other parts of the world—namely on the Asian continent—and if any respected, peer-reviewed science journals were looking into alternative anti-viral treatments to help modulate one's immune system in face of the virus.
What I started to unearth shocked me.
As I did more and more reading, it was clear that the The Ministry of AYUSH, a ministry of the Government of India, that is responsible for developing education, research and propagation of traditional medicine systems in India and the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, were offering a suite of traditional anti-viral medications that are essentially available over-the-counter. Given their rich, thousands-of-years old history of herbal pharmacopeia, I began to seek out respected, peer-reviewed science journals that could corroborate what I was seeing. And it was unbelievable how much is out there in the scientific literature!
This extensive video will take you through many of the herbs that are being used in the treatment of viruses, and more specifically—the one that has rocked the world in the past three years. Watch all the way to the end for information-rich viewing.

We Are REPLANTING a NATIVE FOREST — Ep. 141
We didn't know whether we would get to planting these trees in the ground—all of which we got earlier in the year, but luckily before the wind and snow came in—we got the job done. This area used to have a monoculture of tall, non-native forage grasses, so we're going to manage this area as a native forest, which will also give us a better buffer between us and our neighbors. Once we see these trees establish, we'll be able to plant more trees come spring and fall.

FAMILY Builds a TIMBER FRAME TINY HOUSE to Achieve Financial Freedom (30 Min Timelapse) — Ep. 140
Chris and Blessing Gibson have decided to architect their life by building the tiny home of their dreams—a timber frame with all the fixings! They called on the help of their extended family to see through the project, so it was definitely a family affair. They were able to build and assemble the entire tiny house within the barn at FLOCK, so we were fortunate enough to film the entire process, which you'll get to see within 30 minutes here.
If you're looking to stay in a timber frame similar to this one, you can check out Dean, the builder's location here: http://www.smallgracesatforgetmenotfarm.com/farmstay

COMPANION PLANTING Plan for Stone Raised Beds — Ep. 139
We had just enough leeway in the weather to act quickly and fill up these newly completed stone raised beds in preparation for spring. (I mean, spring is just four looooong months away, right???) That way when spring does come around, we'll be as ready as we can be for planting them up. Though we won't be working the landscape much in the winter, the cold season does give us time to do some planning, so we'll show you the finishing up of the beds and the companion planting plan that we have in store.

6 Popular HERBAL REMEDIES Right Now — Ep. 138
We partnered with Herb Pharm to highlight 6 of the most popular herbal extracts and remedies at the moment. Looking at the top sellers in the herb world can really give us a sense of the state of the world at the moment and give us a clue as to what 'ails' us.
I will remind everyone that the FDA does not evaluate claims of herbs and herbal remedies. And this information is not meant to treat, diagnose or cure any disease or ailment, but is meant as educational information that hopefully can serve you in your exploration and research.

GAZEBO & RAISED STONE Veggie Bed Build — Ep. 137
One of the key landscape design elements we wanted to create here at Flock was both an outdoor community gathering space and central fruit and veg bed. Summer Rayne had her eye on an iron-wrought gazebo and her heart set on some raised stone beds. She sketched out what she was looking for and together we refined the design. First we had to remove the old wooden raised beds and prep the area. And together with O'Brien Masonry, we erected the gazebo and then let them do their great stone work. Here are the results.

Permaculture ORCHARD GUILD Framework — Ep. 136
We've been planting up our orchard since April and are looking forward to seeing it flush out again come spring—(and hopefully without the spongy moth!). Instead of planting it all up at once, we took our time to think about what plants we'd like to plant within the guilds. This is a video on the framework we're using.

Bold & Beautiful: Planting 3,000 ALLIUMS in the Meadow — Ep. 135
This was the first year that we saw the 7-acre meadow flush out since having cleared out 32 tons of trash in what was once a former nursery. Some of the seed that came up, like the annual sunflowers and lupine, was what we had planted last December—and some of it was just seed that was already in the seed bank.
We decided we would continue to "add on" to the meadow by planting some bold, beautiful, and stately ornamental Alliums. Our goal was to plant around 3,000 Alliums of various species so that we could see a succession of purple, white and yellow flowers from May through August. Late July through September is when grasses and other perennials would be at their peak, so would take over where the Alliums left off.

Designing and Planting Our BIGGEST GARDEN BED Yet! (Pssst, it's a Shrubbery) — Ep. 134
This garden bed wasn't in our plans. It didn't even make the list of "things we may want to do this year." But as we started to progress with our garden beds and paths in the front yard near the Common House, we stepped back and thought we just may be able to make this ginormous garden bed happen.
The first plants were in the ground in September 25th, 2022 and by early November, we put in the final plant, (which you'll see in this video). Admittedly we prolonged the gardening process a bit because we wanted to find time to film it all, but this may be one of the biggest (and quickest) garden beds we've put in to date. This garden will primarily be considered a shrub garden, featuring many different types of shrubs, shrubby groundcovers, and herbaceous perennials, which have a propensity for spreading into groundcovers.

Woman Builds 30-HOME POCKET NEIGHBORHOOD with COMMUNITY at CENTER — Ep. 133
Sue Cosentini is not your typical contractor. Sure she gets stuck into framing and building, but she also really thinks through living space—indoors and out—to encourage connectivity between family members and neighbors. She developed an urban "pocket neighborhood" called the Aurora Pocket Neighborhood in Ithaca, NY and she's now in the process of finishing up a more suburban pocket neighborhood called Amabel.

"HEALTH CARE" SUCKS, So This Town Started a FREE, INTEGRATIVE MEDICAL & HERBAL Clinic — Ep. 132
We all know that health care (some say "disease care") needs major reform. Even as a healthy adult—the health care costs in this country are extraordinarily expensive and the medical care is not always up to people's needs and expectations. In 2006, Paul Glover and other interested members of the Ithaca community got together to come up with a community-based healthcare program that would provide integrative medicine to those who need it the most. Now 16 years later, the Ithaca Health Alliance formed the Ithaca Free Clinic, which features conventional and herbal medicines and other alternative practices—for free.
We speak with herbal practioner, 7Song, about the Ithaca Free Clinic and his role in shaping it.

Planting 10,000 MORE BULBS in Our Lawn — Ep. 131
Back in October 2021, we planted over 70,000 bulbs in our front lawn, but we never had an opportunity to plant the sloped portion of our lawn, which was in the original plan. So this year we're making up for it by planting another 10,000 more bulbs by hand. We'll have to wait until spring to see how it turns out, but in the meantime, we got to get some planting done!
This video is graciously sponsored by the European Bulb Exporters Union and http://www.FlowerBulbs.com.
We have a giveaway that is sponsored by FlowerBulbs.com: One (1) lucky winner from the United States will get a $500 gift certificate for bulbs from an online retailer. You have until November 12, 2022 at midnight EST to enter: https://bit.ly/3DNEvLW — just log on using the prompts and from there you can find out how to increase your chances of winning. Good luck and happy planting!

15 SPECIALIST POLLINATOR PLANTS for the Garden — Ep. 129
If you're interested in attracting native specialist pollinators to your garden like we are, then you may want to consider these 15 plants that have co-evolved with a group of pollinators that rely on them. This is a multi-part series of videos focusing on supporting and growing the specialist pollinator community—and you can just do it in a small space, if that's all you have.
We have a free handout, which highlights the native plants based on region of the United States, which you can access here: https://bit.ly/3sktBYJ
Feel free to take that handout to your local nursery or garden center and encourage them to carry more specialist pollinator plants.

Are We SAVING the RIGHT BEES? Create a GARDEN For SPECIALIST POLLINATORS — Ep. 128
Over the past number of years, great emphasis has been placed on honey bee health—particularly after colony collapse disorder. However, that downfall may have masked or deemphasized another graver concern, which is a severe reduction and loss of our native pollinators, particularly specialist pollinators, which are pollinators that rely on a specific species, genus or family of plants for their sustenance. In this episode, I cover what specialist pollinators are, why they matter, and how we can encourage them into our landscapes. This will be the first video of many on this channel highlighting specialist pollinators—so stay tuned here if this topic interests you!

NATIVE PLANT SHOPPING at Catskill Native Nursery — Ep. 127
Sander and I had to take a little road trip across the state to the Catskills and en route we were sure to stop at Catskill Native Nursery, which has a range of plants—including some hard-to-find native plants and new cultivated varieties of native plants. We decided we would put in a large garden relatively last minute (more on that in a future episode), but needed a few more plants to round out that bed.

Planting METAL URNS with FALL FESTIVE COLOR at the MEADOW HOUSE — Ep. 126
We’ve encountered some delays in finishing up the renovations of the Meadow House, but that hasn’t stopped us from making the house feel more like home. Before the fall nears to a close, we decided to plant up some festive rusted metal urns to create a more welcoming space—despite the renovation tools and equipment around. Won’t be long before we dress up the space! So stay tuned.

15 FRUITING GROUNDCOVERS You Should Be Growing — Ep. 124
One of the fun botanical explorations we're doing at Flock is discovering new (and old) fruit-producing groundcovers that can serve as a "trail mix" for birds, wildlife, and in some cases—humans! I personally love fruiting groundcovers because not only are they beautiful and serve some wildlife value, but also can reduce weed pressures. Here are 15 fruiting groundcovers—many of them native to our state of New York—to consider growing in your garden.
