Spring SHADE GARDEN Tour 1 Year After Planting — Ep. 099
The shade garden underneath the weeping white pine was the FIRST garden that we had planted on the land, but it happened in two stages—one during the late-May timeframe and another during the mid-September timeframe, as we started to expand the garden and imagine extending the walkway so that it could provide more room for the plants. You'll see how the first half of the garden has filled in really nicely—and the whole bed boasts over 60 different species and varieties—which is a dramatic improvement from just hosting 3 species—an Acer palmatum, a Picea abies, and the Pinus.

We CLAY PLASTERED the CHICKEN COOP Walls! — Ep. 098
For our future chicken coop, we decided that instead of painting the walls with conventional paint—we would do a natural clay plaster using clay, sand, water and wheat paste. We wanted to experiment in this building first before attempting to do clay plaster in other areas, like the Meadow House and the Common House. We leaned on our friend, Matteo Lundgren and his wife Peaches to show us the ropes of clay plastering.

MAY Tour of POLLINATOR GARDEN — Ep. 097
We began working on this garden in mid- to late-September of 2021, so this is the first spring (May 2022) that we get to enjoy this bed. Previously this area had a few large Miscanthus grass, which we removed early on and replaced with this pollinator garden. Currently it has over 170 different species and varieties of plants, but we'll continually work on it to ensure that there is something blooming from May through November for both birds and bugs—and of course, our own enjoyment!

GRAFTING Ornamental Trees & Shrubs — Ep. 096
In the previous video here on Flock, we had a delightful tour of Coldwater Pond Nursery's collection of rare ornamental trees and shrubs. Instead of bringing in nursery stock, Ted Hildebrandt and team actually graft and grow out all of their plants. In fact, they are one of the few grafting nurseries left on the east coast.
Ted was kind enough to share one of their grafting techniques—even though grafting takes place during the winter months.

60+ Rare ORNAMENTAL TREES & SHRUBS Tour with Coldwater Pond Nursery — Ep. 095
One of the great pleasures we have is touring (and supporting) some of our local greenhouses and nurseries in the Finger Lakes area. Additionally, getting plants locally will often mean that those plants are more accustomed to the weather patterns of the area. One of the nurseries we had been planning to visit since getting on the land was Coldwater Pond Nursery, run by Ted Hildebrandt—a third-generation nurseryman.

REWILDING Spaces with NATIVE, BIOREGIONAL PLANTS — Ep. 093
While we were traveling throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware, we learned of the work of Mark Brownlee and colleagues over at ArcheWild and WildLawn. Though we were initially intrigued by their work around reestablishing native American chestnuts, we were pleasantly surprised to learn of their extensive and research-based approach to rewilding spaces with native, bioregional species. For Mark and his team—it's all about the genetics—so much so that their team painstakingly collects seed from many different regions around the US—primarily in the eastern United States, germinates it in their greenhouses outside Philadelphia, and then plants and monitors their work across multiple states.
We were very impressed with their work that we're now considering doing some experimental planting with them. To find out more information, visit: https://archewild.com/ and https://www.wildlawn.com/.

TRILLIUM TOUR at Mt. Cuba Center — Ep. 090
While traveling through Philadelphia, we took a detour through historic Wilmington and Brandywine Valley, which is an area that is considered part of America’s Garden Capital, boasting over 30+ public gardens within a short distance from one another. Our plan was to visit Mt. REFORESTATION BEST PRACTICES and TECHNIQUES from Mt. Cuba Center — Ep. 089
As we embark on our reforestation and enrichment planting projects here at Flock, we wanted to see what best practices others in the greater region are doing. Mt. Cuba Center—based out of Delaware—has been a leading research center on natural areas and are in the process of planting a 12-acre reforestation site for which they’ll be monitoring and analyzing progress for 100 years. Though the project only kicked off in 2015, there are already some great takeaways from their research.

Quintessential JAPANESE GARDEN & ARCHITECTURE Tour: Shofuso — Ep. 088
Tucked away in the city of Philadelphia—just northwest of the Philadelphia Zoo is the Shofuso Japanese House & Garden. The 17th century-style building was designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura and was built in Japan in 1953 using traditional techniques and materials. It was later moved to Philadelphia and was designed to view the garden from the structure, as opposed to a stroll garden. We spent the day with head gardener, Sandi Polyakov, to learn more about the history of Shofuso and appreciate quintessential Japanese design.

HOME RENOVATIONS to Be Next to DAD & COMMUNITY — Ep. 087
While doing our own renovations, we have begun to meet others who have also been in their own process of renovation. Emily Adams, and her husband Paulus, have a special story since she had decided to come back home to Brooktondale (in the Finger Lakes) to be closer to her father, Barry. While living in Europe, she saw how generations were closer—both as family and community—and wondered if she could foster that at home. She decided to renovate her childhood home to be closer to her father and stitch their homes together to help her dad age comfortably in place.

Why We Call This the HARD-ON BARN! — Ep. 086
When we first got on the land, we had NO idea what to make of the large barn that was at the foot of the property. In fact, we couldn't fathom what to do with it at the time. All of our dads, however, marveled at the barn. "I wish I could take this barn with me," said the son-in-law of the previous owners. Summer Rayne's father proceeded to recite a list of "all the things you can do with this barn," and still yet...we met many others who just couldn't stop talking about "the barn". We joked about it so much that the barn quickly became known as, "The Hard-On Barn"...and you know what? It stuck! Now that we've been on the land for five seasons, we can appreciate HOW USEFUL the barn is and are now finally getting quite a bit of use out of it—turning a 14' x 40' section into a woodworking shop and other areas that would provide a great storage and workspace.

WATER MANAGEMENT on the Land: PONDS, STREAMS, SWALES, BERMS & WATER BARS — Ep. 085
The first season we got on the land we were going through a drought, so we really couldn't see water flowing on the land. However, this past summer and fall, we saw a major influx of rain, which induced high intensity floods in the region. Though the land held up in most places—we saw terrible flooding in certain areas, which means we need to have a game plan when it comes to water management. We called our friend Sean from @EdibleAcres to come by and see if he could help provide some ideas for us.

Help us Plan a 1-ACRE PERMACULTURE Area (for the Birds ;-) — Ep. 082
We have a strip of 1-acre interstitial land that is situated between an even-aged, pioneer/transitional hardwood forest, which had previously been clearcut for marginal grazing—and the newly planted meadow area. We'd like to turn this interstitial land into a permaculture oasis for insects, birds and wildlife.
Our idea is to maintain around a 40-50% canopy coverage—so the future agroforestry area situated in the back can still get sunlight—and begin introducing more plants layered in, particularly those that act as host plants for native insects and that produce beautiful flowers (for us to enjoy) and tasty fruits, drupes, and berries for birds, wildlife and domestic life (including humans)!
We're starting with a "wish list" of plants, but we'd love to hear your suggestions as well.

New Model Helps FARMERS ACCESS LAND — Ep. 080
We have been doing quite a bit of research on collective living models, and in the process of doing that research, we came across the work of the Agrarian Trust, which is an organization that helps farmers gain access to land. They borrow and merge the best of conservation land trust and community land trust models in order to achieve their goal. In the process, the Agrarian Trust has partnered with The Center for Agriculture & Food Systems to share an open-source legal guide to creating one's own agrarian commons system— and also has a toolkit for their project called, Faithlands, which helps utilize unused land held by faith-based organizations.
You can find out more about their work at: https://agrariantrust.org/

FENCE & GATE Strategies to Keep DEER OUT for Good! — Ep. 078
We officially finished the first run of new deer fence and the repairs of the old one as of January 1, 2022, so we have had over a month of monitoring how it's working so far.
We have employed quite a number of different strategies over the 12-acre coverage, so in this video, we'll show you some of our techniques and strategies, which have been working thus far.
As Sander says in the last part of the video—it's likely just about "managing deer". Eventually they may discover a weak point and come in, but we'll stay on the monitoring and adjust as we go. But so far—so good! We hope some of these strategies will also work for you.

Turning Old Nursery into a 7-ACRE NATIVE "INSECT" MEADOW — Ep. 077
When we saw the vestiges of an old plant nursery in a 7-acre area below the future common house, we thought: "How are we going to manage this?" The first idea that came to mind that stuck was a native, "insect" meadow. No, not just a pollinator meadow—but an insect meadow. Let's choose plants that are not only beautiful throughout the seasons—but that that also feed larval stages of native insects to promote more ecosystem health and native and migratory bird populations. That's what we went with—save for a few exceptions.
A meadow also seemed like the best bet because we didn't want to block the views of the the common house and future homes. The top area of the meadow looks out over distant views of the valleys, so we would want to maintain that. Of course, putting in and establishing a meadow is easier said than done, so have to admit, it's taken a lot of work, and we won't know what comes from it for years to come.
Video is brought to you by American Meadows, https://www.americanmeadows.com, which we worked with to source the majority of our meadow seeds.

Earlier this year we decided we'd take on a new project of renovating a 600 square foot seasonal office into a respectable tiny home. But nothing is set in stone—so expect more changes to be made as we start more of the renovations!
