WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW?
You might have installed Linux on your computer as an experiment. Maybe it was to see if you can do something better in Linux than you can do with Windows or Mac.
Well, now that you've got your Linux system all loaded up with programs and everything's tweaked to your satisfaction, what are you going to do?
My suggestions are in the video. ;-)

UBUNTU UNITY IS NOW OFFICIAL! and OBS 28.0!
UBUNTU UNITY IS NOW OFFICIAL! and OBS 28.0!
I talked about Ubuntu Unity in my last show and said I might try it out. Well, I did! It's terrific, and it's running while I'm making this show today. Canonical has agreed to make Ubuntu Unity an official flavor starting with 22.10 due out next month. Sweet!
OBS Studio has released 28.0 with a lot of new features and UI based on QT6. Some features aren't available to Linux users, yet. However, I would imagine they'll be coming soon.

(Now's a good time for that record scratch sound...) Yes! This video is NOT about Linux! It's about a Bourbon I discovered today. Hey, this IS the Drunk Linux User series, right? Well, I don't want to disappoint you...
Buffalo Trace Bourbon is a very fine liquor indeed! If you enjoy Bourbon, I would suggest trying this brand. It's smooth, and almost has a sweet aftertaste.
No...I'm not getting paid or compensated to do this. I just figured, I'm THE Drunk Linux User. I'm going to pass along some information about some of the things I like. You might like them, too.

KDE/KUBUNTU-BACKPORTS-EXTRA
WARNING-WARNING-WARNING! Do not attempt if you're not sure about what you're doing!
Canonical has included KDE's Plasma 5.25.4 in their backports repositories under extras. You are able to upgrade if you want to, but if things are working fine and you're not experiencing any problems with 5.24 do you really need to update? Take a look at the links below and make sure you understand what's available to you. Make sure you back up your data like I keep saying, to make sure you don't lose anything if it gets all buggered up.

UH-OH! PT 3-VIRUS
Not talking about people. Talking about computers.
It really sucks when someone else messes with your stuff. It's even worse when they steal it away from you! I'm not a security expert by any means. But, I can offer some pointers on how to avoid some pitfalls. If you're not one to get your hands dirty and need help, I'd still strongly suggest that you follow steps 1 - 8 below before anything bad happens. Then, call the professionals.
If you want to take a crack at it yourself:
1. Get a listing of all of your installed software before disaster strikes. You're going to need to reinstall them.
2. If you have serial numbers for your software, get them into a document and save them to what you're going to get in #3.
3. Get an external SSD device to back up your data, and then...backup your data.
4. Get two thumb drives you can keep handy.
5. Burn a Linux Live ISO on one of the thumb drives. Your choice.
6. If you're running Windows, put a Windows ISO on the other thumb drive.
7. DISASTER HAS OCCURRED!
8. Disconnect your Ethernet and WiFi if you're connected.
9. Decide which direction you want to take from the instructions below...
a. Are you going to reinstall Windows?
b. Are you going to install/reinstall Linux?
10. When launching either of the two thumb drives, do not connect to WiFi!
11. Using the Linux thumb drive, you can still do some work and save to your external SSD device. You should also be able to connect to your printer if you need it.
12. If you're leasing/renting your modem and/or router, contact your ISP and ask them if they can help you get a hard reset. Maybe even provide a software update remotely. If you own your equipment outright, now's a good time to know how to do this yourself.
13. Once your modem and/or router has been reset, use the Linux thumb drive to download and save to your SSD a good anti-virus software for Windows. You might also want to see about getting the free version of Malwarebytes to double check later on.
14. Use the Linux thumb drive to see if all of your has has been buggered up. If you have some data you can get access to, save it to your external SSD in a different folder. You're going to want to scan that in Windows once you're back up.
15. If you're on Linux, get an antivirus program and follow the same instructions as above. You can't get Malwarebytes for Linux, but decide which antivirus for Linux you want to use and have it ready. There are also rootkit programs you can install for Linux that should help you determine if you're still infected.
16. Once you decide to install your operating system, have your external SSD device ready. Don't plug it in until the installation has completed and you've rebooted and checked to see that everything seems to be running properly again.
17. If everything checks out and you're confident you're in the clear, start moving your data over.
18. After your data has been moved over, restart your computer. Why? Well, you never know if something that was put into one of your folders had a sleeper program just waiting for you to do what you just did and start the whole thing over again. Restarting your computer is a good first step in seeing if you're okay.
19. Install your antivirus software and run the scans.
a. Is everything okay? Good!
b. Are you getting warnings? Read the reports and get rid of anything bad.
20. Do not put on any other programs at this time!
21. Connect to either your Ethernet or WiFi service.
22. Go to safe sites only! Test this for a while. (I know this is a really long and slow process, but you're trying to make sure you're not going to get hosed again!)
23. Think about the programs you had installed before.
a. Are any of them potentially suspicious? Start a search on that program and see if others have had the same problem. If so, do not reinstall them.
b. Is your software from reputable sources? Install one at a time and run your antivirus after each install to make sure you're not going to have any problem.
c. Make sure you're downloading the latest software from the developer/manufacturer's site. Don't trust a software download site where it looks like you can get everything in one place. They might have been unknowingly infected, and you're back to where you started.
24. If you're confident that everything's running like it should, you can try getting some work done. Start backing up everything new you're working on onto the SSD device. Unplug the device when you've finished making the backup.
25. Everything good? Great!
26. UH-OH! It happened again!
a. Well, you're not totally screwed. You do have your data safely stored.
b. If you're into solving problems, you can try to figure out what happened.
c. If you're not into geekdom like some of us, it's time to reach out for professional help.

UH-OH! PT 2-ELECTRICITY
In the last UH-OH! video, I talked about losing the internet. That's bad enough. What about losing your electricity? Are you prepared if the power grid goes down?
Losing electricity affects everyone. The banks, the stores, the gas stations, your ISP's, and yes...even the internet in your area. Your frozen foods will need to be cooked and stored, you won't have hot water, and maybe your water gets turned off, too.
Some industries will have backup generators. They'll continue to work as long as their power sources have the fuel needed to keep them going. You can get backup generators, and maybe even solar panels to help out. But, again; without the fuel, the sun, wind, whatever you're depending on, it's not going to last long. It might not even be enough to keep more than a few appliances running.
What should you do if you want to be ready? Well, this isn't a "preppers" show. It's a practical look at what you need to do regarding your computer and your data.
In the last show, I mentioned what you should do to get your banking and financial life in order. Let's face it; with the power gone, you're not going to keep your computer plugged into a wall socket and expect it to work. So, here are some suggestions. Please feel free to comment your ideas below:
1. Get a UPS, or Uninterrupted Power Supply system for your computer. This will allow you to properly save and/or print out whatever you need for a few minutes. There are many on the market, and try to get the best one for the money you can put into it. I'm not sure what will happen with a Linux system. I'll just be honest about that. But, I have personally experienced system problems with Windows PC's that were not shut down properly because the power was cut off.
2. Before things go to far, print out your important documents. Put them in a file folder, and then put them in a filing cabinet, a drawer, a box, or any other place to which you have easy access. You never know if you'll need an account number, your latest statements, or even scanned in images of your driver's license, social security card, wedding certificate, etc.
3. If you have an alternate power supply system that can run for a while, make sure that if you have WiFi enabled equipment that you can also hook them up by USB cables or whatever else you need. Let's look at this practically. Do you want to keep the meat in your freezer cold, your lights on in your home, or drain that power source unnecessarily trying to get your modem and/or router going? Do what you need to do quickly, and then shut off the computer!
4. Don't try to rely on your phones if you can't charge them back up. Does your phone have replaceable batteries? Most new phones don't. If you happened to be lucky enough to have replaceable batteries, consider getting a back up battery (or two) and keep them charged up. Keep the phone off when you don't need it.
5. You can load up on batteries to keep a radio going, but eventually they drain out, too. Another option is to consider getting a hand crank radio. Some will even allow you to charge your phone by cranking on that radio. Having a radio can help you know when your area might/should be back up on power.
6. This might sound trite, but there's something else you should do if the power goes out. Weather permitting, go outside! Take off your shoes and socks and wiggle your toes into the ground! Just mind the fire ants, bee hives or poison ivy. Is the weather not fit for man nor beast? Stay in, read a book. You know, those things that have a front, back, spine and pieces of paper in-between? They also hold information and entertainment. Your imagination might get a jump start, and you'll find you have some creative juices moving that you didn't know you had. Have anyone living with you? Have some cards or board games handy. Way back in the day, that's how people spent their time. Learn to be a good loser and, more importantly, a gracious winner. Spend time with your animals if you have any. If you have kids, show them how to have a good time with less. This might be a good lesson to show them that sometimes less is more.
7. Most importantly, though...stay safe!

UH-OH! PT 1-INTERNET
You turn on your computer and there is no internet. Hm. Okay, reset your modem and/or router. Still no internet. You check your phone, and nope...no internet for your phone, either. Even using Data and not WiFi.
You turn on your TV, and all of the stations you're seeing have a banner at the bottom saying that the Internet has been shut off and there's no time frame as to when it'll be turned back on. Days? Weeks? Months?
Well, crap! Today was the day you were going to fire up your browser and pay some bills! Uh-oh! Now what are you going to do?
This video is going to give you some ideas just in case something like the above scenario happens. And, before you think it can never happen where you are, think again! Precedents have been made, and procedures have been put in place. Don't be left in Cyberspace Darkness!
1. Begin now by getting your statements on paper through the mail.
A. Banking/Credit Cards
B. Utilities (Electric, Gas, Water, Cable)
C. Insurance (Car, Health, ???)
2. Go online NOW and start getting the addresses for all of the entities you make payments for online.
3. Make sure you have your banks routing numbers and your account numbers.
4. Record your account numbers for the entities you pay.
5. Find out your statement cycles, and when payments are normally due.
6. Buy Envelopes & Stamps
7. Make sure you have pens.
8. Get a notepad or ledger to keep track of who you owe, what you owe, when you owe, and when you pay and/or paid them
9. Have a mortgage? Make sure you get payment coupons. At the very least, make sure you have your account numbers on your checks!
10. Do you have automatic payments set up? You might want to reconsider. If the internet is down, then the entities you've made arrangements might not be able to pull from your bank. You still owe them money, even if your arranged payments are interrupted.
11. Keep some cash on-hand. You might not be able to get food or gas if your cards aren't working.
12. Make a habit of looking at your ledger every day! Don't rely on your memory, and remember...you're not going to get any email reminders if the internet is down.
13. It might not be a bad idea to try to pay down or off your credit cards anyway. It not only keeps you from having too much to worry about, but it'll help your credit score. That might be more important in the future than most people know right now.
14. Do you have all of your pictures and documents on the cloud? Now's a good time to make sure you have them downloaded to your device. Get a backup USB SSD drive while they're reasonably cheap to keep your documents.
15. Print out your most important documents and put them in a real file folder! You never know if/when you'll need them, and I'll explain more in "UH-OH! PT-2".
16. Be smart and most importantly, be responsible! Encourage others to do the same thing. A lot of people want to be green and save the planet by using all of our great tech, but trees are renewable, they help remove carbons from the air while giving us oxygen, and that industry will keep people working.
17. By thinking different, you won't get caught with your internet down.

Pop!_OS KDE
I know. I sound hopeless, but maybe not! I have always liked KDE, but couldn't get it to play nice with Nvidia. That's changed! I found a couple of websites that have helped me get KDE on Pop!_OS, and here's what I learned...
1. Follow directions!
2. Read through the directions a couple of times to make sure you understand what you're doing.
3. Have a Live Linux Thumb drive ready just in case!
4. If I were to do this again, I'd only install KDE Standard instead of KDE Full, but that's just me!
5. When fixing the jitteriness and slight lag time using the listed URL below, test each tweak to see if it's working. You might not have to go through the whole thing.
6. In the Buttery Smooth tweak section, it talks about switching OpenGL from 2 to 3. In the latest KDE, you can't. The third page link below explains why.
7. I wish I had installed Windows 10 on my little SSD drive, and then installed Pop!_OS on my NVMe SSD. Hm. Maybe I'll clone and try to move them around. Nothing like confusing the boot loaders, eh?
On a positive note, if you love KDE and you love Pop!_OS, then you can have your cake and eat it, too.

GIVING YOU THE BIRDS!
GIVING YOU THE BIRDS!
If you're using Thunderbird and thinking about upgrading from 91 to 102, you might want to look at this video first. Apparently, there are some issues with the changes made in 102, and they could be disastrous! I offer some advice about Thunderbird, and reintroduce Betterbird. Betterbird is a "fork" of Thunderbird with additional features and bug fixes.

LINUX READY HARDWARE!
I know, I know...I've made Linux sound like it's a real PITA to install and get going. Most of the time, it isn't! However, if you're looking to buy a new laptop or desktop and want it to be Linux ready or have Linux already installed, well; you've come to the right place!
I'm simply going to provide links to the sites I highlighted today. Try performing a search if you're still not finding what you're looking for. You might run across a great deal and computer.

DISTROHOPPERS ANONYMOUS
Hi. My name is Len, and I'm a Distrohopper...
I'm one of those people who likes to explore different distributions and tech in general. I went through a lot of different Distros until I finally found one that I not only liked and could tweak to my needs, but one I could actually stick with.
This isn't always easy!
For some people, it probably appeared that I was goofing off and wasting time. I'll admit that I was playing around sometimes, but the overall experience was worth it for me. I learned a LOT! I had the time to do this kind of research and a family that allowed me to do so.
I decided to create this channel to help people new to or wanting to know more about Linux. The Advanced and the Advanced-Intermediate users know more than I do. I defer to their knowledge. Knowledge that I don't honestly have the desire to have.
There are a lot of people who just want something stable, secure, and easy to use. Sometimes you get lucky with a Distro and you get all of that in one shot. Sometimes you deal with trade-offs. For the casual or work oriented user, I hope my videos give you something to use to improve your Linux Life.

THE "EYES" HAVE IT?
What has 5, 9, and 14 eyes? We'll talk a little bit about the agencies around the world who can listen in on us, and if they share information.
We'll also talk about the purpose of VPN's. I'm not recommending any particular one, but why would you need one in the first place?
Lastly, let's also explore Proprietary vs. Open Source when it comes to operating systems and software.

WANT TO INSTALL/UPGRADE TO UBUNTU 22.04?
Canonical has just put out their first point release for Ubuntu 22.04. It's been named, funny enough, 22.04.1. Whether you're thinking about installing Ubuntu for the first time, or you're on 20.04 and want to upgrade to 22.04.1, we'll go over the steps needed to get there.
If you're new to Linux or Ubuntu, I'd suggest reading these pages over a couple of times (at least!) before installing or upgrading. Get your notes together. After the install, search online for "what to do after installing ubuntu 22.04) to get the most out of your new operating system.
Remember!!! Back up your data!
