GNOME PANEL ICONS, GRUB, OS-PROBER
No ranting or dire warnings today! We’re here for some odd little “How-To’s”. Sit back, get the popcorn, and let’s see if I can do this without a net…
Gnome & Top Panel Indicators…Miss ’em? Here are a couple of ways you can get them back: https://itsfoss.com/enable-applet-indicator-gnome/
Here’s the extension for the above article: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/615/appindicator-support/
I don’t have an iPhone, but if I did I’d try these instructions to get it to mount on a Linux box (didn’t that sound dirty?): https://www.maketecheasier.com/easily-mount-your-iphone-as-an-external-drive-in-ubuntu/
Did you install an Arch based system and can’t find your other OS on other disks or partitions? This nasty little problem can be fixed using the following pieces of help:
* https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/os-prober-grub/14322
* https://itsfoss.com/customize-grub-linux/
* https://averagelinuxuser.com/dual-boot-arch-linux-with-linux/
Ready to break away from Facebook for a spell or permanently? Here’s a good article that explains how and why you should consider one of two options: https://www.maketecheasier.com/deactivate-delete-facebook/

POP OS, GRUB, TERMINALS, CONTAINERS, 0 RANTS
Trying out Pop_OS…because I can, and I read somewhere that it’s supposed to be a really good Linux distro for Video creation and editing. We shall see about that! Here’s the link for the Distro: https://pop.system76.com/
Pop_OS changes the way you boot if you have more than one OS on your drive or if you have a second drive. Here’s a good video on how to fix that. It’s what I used, and it’s working perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE6YjpZLHNE
I mentioned before that Linux can use different file systems. Here’s an article if you want to learn more: https://www.fosslinux.com/41737/linux-file-systems.htm
You see me working with the Terminal on occasion. If you’d like to know more about getting around in the Terminal, take a look at this article: https://linuxhint.com/navigate-linux-terminal/
If you’re really interested in becoming a Linux Expert, there are many free ways to get the information you need. I can’t vouch for this, but here’s a paid version that you might be interested in. It appears to be structured, and it’s only $59 for a lifetime ability to go back and learn again if you need to. https://deals.ghacks.net/sales/the-complete-2020-learn-linux-bundle
As much as I love to tinker around in Linux, I am NOT a programmer nor a Systems Admin! I’m just a guy trying to pass along what I’ve learned along the way to help other noobs. If you want to see my eyes start to glass over, take a look at this extremely well written and (at this point of my life) way over the top of my abilities article about Containers. https://opensource.com/resources/what-are-linux-containers

ENDEAVOUROS ARCH & KDE
I took the plunge and decided to install EndeavourOS on a separate partition. It’s worked very well, so far. There’s just one little problem that really isn’t a problem, but it just looks like a problem. The Network Manager keeps saying I have limited connectivity when I don’t. I’ve checked some sites, and their fixes don’t work for me. Hey, if it’s a non-issue, I think I can live with it.

DRUNK LINUX USER ON WINDOWS?
My new toy is a Dell 8940, and it's really nice! It rendered the video in just a few minutes. It would have taken over 40 minutes with my laptop!
Here's the info on the Tower: Dell XPS 8940 2021 Flagship Tower Desktop Computer 10th Gen Intel Octa-Core i7-10700 32GB DDR4 1TB SSD Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 DisplayPort USB-C WiFi Win10 Black
If anyone's got a definitive solution to partition this beast, let me know. Regardless, I'm still going to move drives from the laptop to the tower. Cross your fingers!

CAN LINUX CATCH A COLD?
I'm trying not to use the "V" word so that when I do drop this in YouTube I don't get kicked off. This is my work flow for making videos in Linux. Everyone has their own way of doing things. This just happens to be mine. I’m using my cellphone for a camera today, Audacity is used to clean up the audio. I’m recording the desktop using Vokoscreen, and I use Shotcut Video editor to slap it all together and render the final result. Hope this helps!
Audacity on Linux, PC, or Mac? Find the 2.3.3 version. You’ll have to search for that in your repositories or online.

Southern Comfort (just because, and as a warning: this stuff made me sicker’n a dog one night. not talking about it, but I love the flavor.): https://www.southerncomfort.com/
Might talk about LineageOS soon. Maybe: https://lineageos.org/

because you’re all buzzed up and think you’re getting cool stuff. You’re probably not. Bottoms up, and later dudes!

INSTALL WINDOWS AFTER LINUX?
So, you’ve installed Linux, you like it, but then you realize…Crap! I need Windows, too! Fear not. There is a way…
Download a Windows ISO file from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/
Visit this website to install and use WoeUSB: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/06/create-bootable-windows-10-usb-ubuntu
You’ll need to make some room on your hard drive, so study up on GParted starting here: https://gparted.org/display-doc.php?name=moving-space-between-partitions
GParted study-up part 2 here (easier site): https://linuxiac.com/how-to-use-gparted-to-create-and-resize-partitions/
You’ll need to set up your Dual Boot with some help from Boot-Repair. Start here: https://www.techsolveprac.com/dual-boot-windows-over-linux-mint/
Here’s a more indepth Boot-Repair tutorial if you need it: https://linuxhint.com/ubuntu_boot_repair_tutorial/
One thing you can do is print out these links and keep them handy if you’re using your Linux Boot USB to make changes. You can always use Firefox to follow these directions. You don’t want to make any mistakes.

DID I FIX THE VIDEO STUTTER?
Even after all these years of using Linux, I’ll still find something new. I’ve used video taken and saved by cameras before, but not so much using a webcam. That’s what I’ve been doing for these videos. I was using OBS-Studio. I’m not doing that any more. I’m using Webcamoid to set up my video settings and then using VokoscreenNG to record from my webcam and desktop. Seems to be working! We’ll find out after I post this video. In the meantime, here are some links for you:

ACTS OF GOD & BACKING UP
We had a power outage, I lost my OS, and I've had to start over. Hard? Nope. Easy? Mostly. Prepared? As much as I can. Back up your data, and look out for thunderstorms!
It looks like turning off my compositor in Xfce makes a huge difference in not having 'jerky' or 'freezing' videos. Time will tell.
Dang, what a day!!!

PURTIFY YOUR LINUX DESKTOP
Want to turn your Linux Desktop appearance into Windows (why on God’s green Earth would you do such a thing?), a Mac, or just look different? Linux Desktops offer different ways to change their appearance. Take a look…
(Oh, and I found a better theme for Xfce in Manjaro that I'll show you next time around. ;-) )
For ALL Things Customizable in Linux: https://www.pling.com/
Another Great Source for Appearance & Icon Themes: https://b00merang.weebly.com/
Yuengling - America’s Oldest Brewery (Just Because): https://www.yuengling.com/ (Their Lager and Black & Tan are my favorites!)
There is another place you can drop Theme & Icon folders, and that's in your Home Directory in the corresponding .theme or .icon folder. The only thing about this is that if an Open/Close dialog pops up, it's not going to be themed like the rest of your desktop. Cursors revert to the default as well. This is why I suggested you place these folders in your /usr/share/themes or icons folders.

INSTALL PROGRAMS IN LINUX
There are many ways to install programs in Linux. I'm showing some of the most common ways in a Debian based distribution; PPA's, AppImages, FlatPaks, Snaps, Binary and .deb files. I also talk about how to make a .desktop file in case you run into a problem where your program doesn't show up in your menu...
To learn about PPA's: https://itsfoss.com/ppa-guide/
How to create a .desktop file: https://www.maketecheasier.com/create-desktop-file-linux/
Insert your application name and use this code to move your .desktop file from your desktop to your system files: sudo mv applicationname.desktop /usr/share/applications

A self contained application system - FlatHub: https://flathub.org/home

MY FAVORITE LINUX SITES
I'm a self-taught Linux User. I'm not a 'power-user' by my definition, I'm more of an 'Intermediate' user. I've learned a lot online from some sites that have come and gone, and the following sites that are still sticking around as of today. You can learn a lot from these sites and the people who have contributed to them. Take a look, and have some fun!
Oh, and yeah; I *really* need to get a newer computer. My poor processor just doesn't have the cajones to do these videos smoothly. My apologies for some of the picture freezes. The audio keeps going smoothly though; thankfully!
