INSTALLING LINUX MINT 20.3/TALKING ABOUT GECKOLINUX
I finally saw that Linux Mint 20.3 was available, so I'm showing you how to install it onto your existing LM system. Please note that upgrades like this do take time when they're first released! Everybody and their uncle are trying to download the files, so please be patient. You can still run your LM while this is working in the background. You'll need to reboot after it's been installed to see the changes. https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=292

Y2K22/KDE PLASMA/LM MATE
Guess there was a problem with Microsoft Exchange Servers when we changed years a few days ago. It's being coined the "Y2K22 Bug". Once again, Microsoft seems to have a problem formatting dates for their systems like they did back in 2000. Here's a quick story on it: https://news.itsfoss.com/y2k22-bug/
Manjaro KDE still locks up on me. Maybe your experience is better?: https://manjaro.org/download/
I tried Linux Mint Mate. It seems to have a real problem with Multitasking, and moving program icons in the panel is a real PITA!: https://linuxmint.com/rel_uma_mate_whatsnew.php
So, it's back to Linux Mint Cinnamon. I'm not trying to find a replacement, but I personally have not found a more stable and smooth Distro & DE: https://linuxmint.com/rel_uma_cinnamon_whatsnew.php

MS EDGE CRUFT & ARC MENU
MS EDGE CRUFT & ARC MENU
I'm finding more people becoming more disenchanted with the amount of "enhancements" Microsoft is putting into their Edge browser. I don't use Edge, and unless forced to, never will. I'm also not certain how much of this pertains to Linux, either. So, if you have some insight, leave me a note and I'll credit you with the answer in an upcoming video.

COMING FROM WINDOWS OR MAC?
With the best of intentions, people will try to bring others over from Windows or Mac by suggesting distros that look like those two OS's. Yup. They're similar, alright. Nope, they don't exactly run like them, either.
There are two distros that are commonly referenced as alternatives to Windows and Mac. They are Linux Mint and Elementary OS respectively. This video will hopefully allow you to make some informed decisions if you're interested in moving to or trying Linux.
Admittedly, I might be wrong about some of my 'supposing' in this video. If you know where I flubbed up, please feel free to add your comments below. :-)
ElementaryOS has come out with a new point release: https://elementary.io/
Linux Mint will soon have a new point release as well: https://linuxmint.com/

I'M META ANTI-SOCIAL
I would think it’s kind of obvious that I like Tech. I like to work with Tech. But, I don’t want Tech to work me. I’m talking about my push-back against the Metaverse in this episode. Some will agree, some will not. That’s just life. I’m just saying we need to actually have a life.
Great article on FossBytes about living in the Metaverse for one week: https://fossbytes.com/how-i-lived-a-week-in-the-vr-metaverse/

FLUTTER / PDF's
Two Cool Programs Today!
Google's come out with a new way to make programs cross platform in a major way. It's called, "Flutter". Canonical's going to use Flutter to make their new installer for the next version of Ubuntu.
Learn about Flutter here: https://flutter.dev/
OMG Ubuntu has a new article about the (possibly) first Flutter app in the wild. It's called AppImage Pool, and it's very cool! You will no longer need to hunt down AppImages if you prefer to use them.
Read the OMG Ubuntu article here: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2021/12/appimage-pool-for-linux-desktops
Ever need to merge PDF's or sort them? Here's a great way to do so in Linux. It's called PDF Arranger. You can read about it and learn how to install the program on this page through FOSS Linux:

INXI!
The Word of the Day?
INXI!
Yes, I know; another four letter word. Like the others you may know already, this little word has power that can help you when you need to know more about your Linux system and hardware.
The pages below will show you how to install Inxi on your system, and how to reap the rewards of using it when it’s needed.

HARDWARE ACCELERATION WOES
Hardware Acceleration became the bane of my existence. Actually, a thorn in my side. I would watch videos and about halfway in, the desktop would lock up. I couldn’t move my cursor, close windows, or use Ctrl-Alt-Delete or Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to refresh the desktop. After looking around for a cure to this problem, I found out that it could be that Hardware Acceleration was enabled in my browser. The suggestion was to turn it off. It worked!
Here are some sites that might help to explain in more detail what Hardware Acceleration is and how to turn it on/off for your needs:

Hope this helps you if you’re having the same problem I was having.

ETHERNET, MINT BETA, MAINSTREAM LINUX
A funny thing happened on the way to the internet. We had just moved in, I had originally ordered 200 mbs internet, and realized we really needed more and upgraded to 400 mbs. Lo and behold…I was still getting 200 mbs on Ethernet! What the…?
I use a VPN, so I thought maybe it was the server I was hooked up to that was slowing me down. I disabled the VPN, and nope! Still 200 mbs!
I growled and cursed and then remembered something I’d read a while back. Change out the Ethernet cable. I wasn’t really expecting much, though. The cable I used before the move was getting 400 mbs, why not here?
Well, let’s chalk that up to the cable possibly being bent or damaged in the move. Or, maybe it was cosmic rays. Regardless, I swapped cables with what came with the modem/router (shorter than my original by a whole lot), and gave it a go.
You already know what happened. Even with the VPN I’m getting around 430 mbs on download and 20 mbs on upload. That’s what the service said they’d offer, and that’s what I’m getting.
I’m including links that describe this in more detail in the show notes.

I ran across another article I thought was pretty interesting about GPG. This is an encryption system in Linux that allows you to share files and emails with other people safely. So, if you’ve been worried about Corporate Espionage, then this might be for you. Take a look at this introductory lesson. If you think it can work for you, give it a go! There are a lot of people out there that can help you if you get stuck.

Linux Mint 20.3 beta is out. I won’t suggest using this for your production machine until all the bugs are worked out, but if you want to spin this up in a VirtualBox, you might like some of the changes.
