He was exiled from Jerusalem three times due to his orthodoxy and opposition to Arianism. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his beliefs and played a crucial role in achieving doctrinal unity and peace. He is remembered for his work, The Catecheses, which was focused on preparing catechumens and neophytes. St. Cyril is an example of a heroic bishop who left a legacy to build the Middle Ages. His fight against heresies, along with other saints and heroes, helped establish the Catholic State and set the foundations for Scholasticism. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira notes that we should fight for the Church with the certainty that we are defeating the Revolution and the knowledge that our efforts, even if they go unrecognized, will be recognized by God on the Day of Judgment. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Thursday, March 16th - 2023 – St. Abraham of Kidunaia St. Abraham of Kidunaia was born in Mesopotamia in the 4th century to wealthy nobles who planned a marriage for him. On the last day of his wedding celebration, he slipped away secretly to live in solitude in a cave in the desert. After 17 days, he was found and left in his solitude. When his parents died, he inherited their fortune and gave half of it to the poor. He was eventually asked by the Bishop of Edessa to go to the neighboring city of Beth-Kidunaia, where he built a Catholic church and preached to the idolaters there. After three years, the people of Kidunaia converted to the Catholic faith. St. Abraham later brought his niece to his cave to live with him, but she was seduced and became a prostitute. After discovering the truth, he went to the city to bring her back and she repented. St. Abraham lived to the age of 70, and after his death, many people came to his cave to receive his blessing. His position was counter-revolutionary, and he fought against the motto: "Cede to not lose." His life serves as an example to Catholics today who must speak the whole truth and stand up against the forces that oppose the Church. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Tuesday, March 14th - 2023 – St. Anthony of Carthage St. Anthony of Carthage was born in North Africa in the late 15th century and sold as a slave when young. In Sicily, he became a shepherd and began to admire the Catholic faith of his masters, eventually converting. He adhered to Catholic principles with ardent zeal, feeding the poor with his flock's milk and cheese. After his master granted him freedom, he chose to continue working for him for a few years before seeking to devote himself more rigorously to work in the hospital in Noto caring for the sick. He entered religion and became a Third Order Franciscan, giving to the poor even from the alms he received, and redoubled his work in the hospitals. He became a contemplative and spent his remaining years in prayer and meditation as a desert hermit. His patience in the face of adversity, dedication to serving the needy, and profound humility raised general admiration for this African Saint. The Jesuits spread the devotion to St. Anthony of Categeró from Italy to Brazil, where he became a symbol of comfort for the slaves brought over from Africa. Our Lady asked the rector to build a chapel there, and she proved her authenticity by providing a sign of a barn, which was empty until that moment, was overflowing with grains of wheat. The chapel became a place of pilgrimage in France. This story reveals that Our Lady can take a muddy and sinful soul and transform it into a sanctuary. She can impose her sovereignty and defeat the power of the Devil. Our Lady appeared to a little shepherd girl to show her insistence in appearing to innocent simple country persons, where it is easier to live a holy life. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Friday, March 10th - 2023 – 40 Martyrs of Sebaste The 40 Martyrs of Sebaste were a group of Roman soldiers stationed in Sebaste who were tortured and martyred for their Catholic faith in 320 AD. After their refusal to renounce their faith, they were put in a pond of frozen water overnight, and all but one died. The mother of the surviving soldier, Melito, exhorted him to persevere to the end, and upon his death, he joined his companions in martyrdom. Their ashes were to be dispersed in the wind and their bones thrown into the river, but God conserved them so that the faithful could gather them later and keep them as precious relics. St. Basil praised the martyrs for their heroism and compared their arrival in heaven to a triumphal procession into Rome. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira praised the mother of Melito for her selflessness and grandeur of soul in offering her son for martyrdom. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Monday, February 13th, 2023 – Feast of St. Catherine of Ricci St. Catherine of Ricci was born into a patrician family in Florence in 1522. At age 13, she entered a cloistered convent of the Third Order of St. Dominic where she was eventually named Prioress. She experienced the Ecstasy of the Agony of Our Lord every Friday from 12 noon to 4 pm and her suffering was accompanied by the stigmata, which drew many visitors and skeptics. She begged Heaven to cease these phenomena and her prayers were answered after 12 years. She died surrounded by a choir of Angels and was seen ascending to Heaven by St. Madeleine of Pazzi. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira explains that virtue is accessible to all Catholics, heroic virtue requires special graces but is called for by all. He emphasizes that sanctity is the practice of heroic virtue, not just the possession of good habits. Religious life can require heroism equal to that of a hero on the battlefield. Anne Catherine Emmerich Anne Catherine Emmerich was a German Catholic nun and mystic who lived in the early 19th century. Born into a poor farming family, she worked as a seamstress before joining Augustinian nuns at the convent of in Dülmen. She was known for her strict observance of religious life and for her religious ecstasies. In 1813, marks of the stigmata were reported on her body, causing a lengthy investigation by the ecclesiastical authorities. She had many mystical visions, including talking with Jesus and seeing the souls in purgatory. She died on 9 February 1824 in Dülmen and was buried in the graveyard outside the town, with a large number of people attending her funeral. INTRO – Just 1 more day to the weekend. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 – Feast of St Jerome Emiliani St. Jerome Emiliani was a former military commander for Venice who was imprisoned in a dungeon. He experienced a spiritual transformation and dedicated himself to helping the poor and suffering, particularly orphans. He used his own money to rent a house for the orphans and feed, clothe and educate them. He went on to found orphanages in other cities, a hospital, and a shelter for prostitutes which grew into a religious society named Clerics Regular of Somascha. He died while assisting the sick during a plague outbreak in 1537. INTRO – We made it to half way through the week! Congrats to you! We’re almost there.
