Milano in Guerra

Kampf um Norwegen – Feldzug 1940 is a 1940 Nazi propaganda film directed by Martin Rikli and Dr. Werner Buhre, narrated by Harry Giese. The film is produced by the Oberkommando Wehrmacht (OKW) and Die Universum Film AG (UFA). Audio in German with English subtitles. Introduction by historian Guri Hjeltnes.
Germany's surprise invasion of Denmark and Norway in April 1940 witnessed heavy fighting on land and at sea, and the first confrontation of the war against Anglo-French forces. Berlin's 1940 cinematic record of the campaign incorporated footage shot by German combat correspondents, animated maps, and scenes from captured Allied newsreels to present a dramatic, comprehensive chronology of the fighting.
The German army's rapid seizure of Copenhagen and Oslo, and the infantry's advance across mountainous terrain defended by Norwegian ski troops, define the struggles for Denmark and central Norway. The film's editors blended Allied documentation of naval engagements off Norway's coast with German footage, offering a riveting account of the battles as seen by the men of both navies. The Germans' tenacious defense of Narvik against elite French troops highlights the full-length feature.
The film was shown only internally for the three branches of the German armed forces, although it was a feature film designed for the general audience. It was shelved for unknown reasons, perhaps only because the topic was no longer top priority. Believed lost, a brilliant print surfaced in auction 2005 , and was preserved by the Norsk Filminstitutt and the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv.

Feuertaufe/Baptism of Fire - Luftwaffe in Poland 1939
A 1941 Tobis Filmkunst War Documentary directed by Hans Bertram, narrated by Herbert Gernot. Audio in German with English subtitles.
The Legend of the Luftwaffe began in Poland. Feuertaufe, directed by Hans Bertram, himself a world-renowned aviator, captures war as never seen before. Combat cameramen filmed the aerial campaign, showing preparations for flight, massive air strikes, and the appalling devastation wreaked upon Polish towns and armies. (Seven cameramen died during filming.) The use of trick photography and maps makes this documentary one of the Third Reich's most sophisticated propaganda films. Norbert Schultze's original score lyrically enhances this masterpiece, and his concluding anthem - promising "Bomben auf Engelland" - predicts further triumphs for the mighty Luftwaffe.

Tag der Freiheit: Unsere Wehrmacht/Day of Freedom: Our Armed Forces
Tag der Freiheit: Unsere Wehrmacht (Day of Freedom: Our Armed Forces) is the third documentary directed by Leni Riefenstahl, following Der Sieg des Glaubens and Triumph des Willens. No narration.
Her third film recounts the Seventh Party Rally of the Nazi Party, which occurred in Nuremberg in 1935, and focuses on the German army. Tag der Freiheit was considered lost at the end of World War II, but an incomplete print of the film was discovered in the 1970s—the extant footage reveals Riefenstahl mainly reprising the approach she used in Triumph of the Will (1934), though certain more expressionistic sequences clearly presage the more audacious style she would adopt for Olympia (1938).
When several generals in the Wehrmacht protested over the minimal army presence in Triumph of the Will, Hitler proposed his own "artistic" compromise where Triumph would open with a camera slowly tracking down a row of all the "overlooked" generals (and placate each general's ego). According to her own testimony, Riefenstahl boldly refused his suggestion and insisted on keeping artistic control over Triumph of the Will. She did agree to return to the 1935 rally and make a film exclusively about the Wehrmacht, which became Tag der Freiheit.
The film depicts a mock battle staged by German troops during the ceremonies at Nuremberg on German Armed Forces Day 1935. The camera follows the soldiers from their early-morning preparations in their tent city as they march singing to the vast parade grounds where a miniature war involving infantry, cavalry, aircraft, flak guns and the first public appearance of Germany's new forbidden tank is presented before Hitler and thousands of spectators.
The film ends with a montage of Nazi flags to the tune of the "Deutschlandlied" and a shot of German fighter biplanes flying overhead in a swastika formation.

1940: Italia in guerra | La Dichiarazione (1° Puntata)

Triumph des Willens/Triumph of the Will by Leni Riefenstahl (1935 - ENG SUB)
Triumph of the Will (German: Triumph des Willens) is a 1935 German Nazi propaganda film directed, produced, edited and co-written by Leni Riefenstahl. Audio in German with English subtitles.
It chronicles the 1934 Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg, which was attended by more than 700,000 Nazi supporters. The film contains excerpts of speeches given by Nazi leaders at the Congress, including Hitler, Rudolf Hess and Julius Streicher, interspersed with footage of massed Sturmabteilung (SA) and Schutzstaffel (SS) troops and public reaction. Its overriding theme is the return of Germany as a great power with Hitler as its leader. The film was produced after the Night of the Long Knives, and many formerly prominent SA members are absent.
Following its release in March 1935, it became a major example of film used as propaganda and was well-received at home. Riefenstahl's techniques—such as moving cameras, aerial photography, the use of long-focus lenses to create a distorted perspective, and the revolutionary approach to the use of music and cinematography—have earned Triumph of the Will recognition as one of the greatest propaganda films in history. It won several awards in Germany, France and Italy.
During World War II, Frank Capra's seven-film series Why We Fight was directly inspired by Triumph of the Will and the United States' response to it.
The film begins with a prologue establishing the present-day as 5 September 1934 and the elapsed time since World War I, the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler's appointment as chancellor, climaxing in his visit to Nuremberg on that day. It is the only commentary in the entire film.

The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo
A 2011 National Geographic Documentary.
Arrayed in crypts and churches, with leering skulls and parchment skin, the desiccated dead of Sicily have long kept mute vigil. But now, centuries later, these creepy cadavers have plenty to say. Led by anthropologist Dario Piombino-Mascali of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity in Palermo, the ongoing investigation is revealing how religious men and their wealthy supporters ate, interacted, dealt with disease, and disposed of their dead.
In the case of the Sicilian mummies, that means x-ray exams and CT scans rather than invasive sampling and autopsy. Radiographic techniques preserve the specimens—the oldest of which dates to 1599, when Capuchin friars began mummifying clergy, then nobles and bourgeoisie who hoped to secure blessed afterlives—even as they peek inside. Mummification in Sicily usually meant stowing a body in a ventilated chamber, draining it of bodily fluids, and stuffing it with straw or bay leaves, to preserve its shape and combat the stink of death. Months later it would be washed with vinegar, dressed in its Sunday best, and laid in a coffin or hung on a wall. The more recently mummified—like two-year-old Rosalia "Sleeping Beauty" Lombardo, who died of pneumonia in 1920 and lies with 1,251 others in the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo—were embalmed with chemicals, and thus better preserved.
Mummy-experts try to rescue world’s greatest accumulation of mummies, endangered by humidity and showing signs of caducity, including the best preserved corpse worldwide: The little girl Rosalia Lombardo. Experts move to rescue the world’s greatest accumulation of mummies, endangered by humidity and showing signs of decay, including the world’s best preserved corpse: a two-year old girl from 1920.
"For many years the subject of death was taboo [in Sicily]," he says. "In the 20th century, things like the two world wars somehow influenced the approach Sicilians had toward death. They just didn't want to talk about it anymore.
"Now, given the scientific importance of what's emerging with these mummies, people are understanding that in Sicily, death has always been part of life. And for centuries many Sicilians were using mummification to make sure there was a constant relationship between life and death."
