Honeywell 5808W3: Changing the Battery
In this video, Jorge shows users how to change the battery in a Honeywell 5808W3 Wireless Smoke and Heat Detector. The device is powered using a single CR123A lithium battery, and a low-battery warning displays when to change the battery. A low battery is first indicated by a blinking red LED light.
The battery for a 5808W3 is considered to be "low" when its voltage drops below 2.5 volts. When this occurs, the device will send a signal to the alarm panel to let it know that the battery is low. The wireless zone that the sensor is assigned to will be displayed so that the device can be identified. Additionally, the red LED light on the 5808W3 will blink every 45 seconds, and the device's test switch will become disabled.
If the battery is not changed within seven days, the device will produce a short "chirp" sound every 45 seconds in order to provide an audible alert of a low battery. Pressing the test button will disable the sound for 12 hours. It is strongly recommended that the battery be replaced during this time, as a failed smoke detector could prove to be life-threatening.
Replacing the battery for a Honeywell 5808W3 is actually very simple. In most cases, the device will be secured to its mounting plate on a wall or ceiling. The device can be separated from its mounting plate by pushing it against the mounting plate and then turning the detector counter-clockwise. It is important to only do this while the system is disarmed, as this will cause the tamper on the device to activate.
With the device opened up, the old battery can easily be removed, and a fresh one can be applied. Make sure to apply the new battery with the positive and negative ends facing the proper directions. The tamper cover can then be reapplied, and the tamper condition can be cleared on the alarm system.
