In this video, Jorge from Alarm Grid explains how you can use an IP communicator with a Honeywell Alarm System. Using IP communication with an alarm system can work quite well. It provides fast speeds, and it is generally very reliable. You just have to be wary of any internet outages the may occur.

Internet service represents one of the most common communication paths for an alarm system. Nearly every household has reliable, fast internet service today, and you can easily use it as a communication path for your security system. First, you must get the panel connected to your local IP (internet protocol) network.

As the name from this video implies, the most common way to do this is by using a wireless WIFI network. You might also do this is using a hardwired ethernet connection. Your panel will need an IP communicator. This might be an internal WIFI card, or it might a communicator that has an ethernet port for facilitating an ethernet connection.

You will also need an alarm monitoring plan to activate the communicator. At Alarm Grid, all of our monitoring plans include internet connectivity. You monitoring company will need the MAC Address and CRC Code to activate the IP communicator used with your Honeywell Alarm System. This will connect the system with the AlarmNet360 servers for monitoring service. If your monitoring plan includes access to Total Connect 2.0, then you will also be able to control your system through a web browser or mobile app.

However, you should be aware internet connections are not perfect. If the internet goes down, then your panel will not be monitored until the connection is restored. For that reason, you may want to add a cellular backup to the system as well. Cellular connectivity isn't quite as fast as IP connectivity, but it is more reliable. Just be aware that you will need to upgrade to a monitoring plan that includes cellular service.
