I saw a man at the close of day
Standing by the grocery door,
His eyes were sunken his lips were parched
I viewed him o'er and o'er.

His little son stood by his side
And unto him he said,
"Dear Father, Mother is sick at home
And Sister cries for bread."

But he turned away he walked inside
He staggered up to the bar,
And to the landlord he did say
"Bring me one drink more."

Then one day when I chanced that way
A crowd stood 'round the door,
Inquiring why, one's reply
Was, "The drunkard is no more."

Then a hearse rolled slowly by
No wife nor children trailed,
They'd gone before their murderer
And left this world of pain.

Come all you jolly dram drinkers
A warning by this take,
And quit your overflowing bowl
Before it is too late.
