I learned "In the Pines" from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky, who tuned his banjo f♯DF♯AD. Here, I play my own version in the related tuning gCGCD. This song was made famous by Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter, who was recorded by Alan Lomax in the 1930s. It was also recorded by Dock Walsh in the 1920s, and later by Bill Monroe, the Louvin Brothers, Loretta Lynn, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and by Kurt Cobain under the title "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"

My instrument is a 1913 Vega Fairbanks "Regent" 5-string banjo with maple bridge by Joel Hooks, and La Bella No. 17 nylon strings.
