Waltzing Matilda (Jimmie Rodgers, 1959). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2021-09-10. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"

"Waltzing Matilda," lyrics written in 1895 by Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson using the Scottish tune"Craigielee March" (theculturetrip.com, 2021), was a minor hit for Jimmie Rodgers rising to #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959-1960 (Whitburn, 2013). The song has become Australia's unofficial national anthem and holds the honor of having the most "recordings of this song registered on the Sounds of Australia registry in the National Film and Sound Archive than any other song in the nation" (theculturetrip.com, 2021). The song is filled with Australian slang, the most important of which is the song's title; waltzing = walking, Matilda = one's belongings; hence, walking with one's stuff (songfacts.com, 2021; theculturetrip.com, 2021). Here are some of the other slang terms used in the song (trishansoz.com, 2021):
Swagman: an itinerant worker
Billabong: a pond
Coolibah Tree: a eucalyptus tree
Billy: a tin can in which to boil water
Jumbuck: a sheep
Tucker Bag: usually a flour bag used to store food
