Jimmy Buffett had 7 top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, "Margaritaville" was his highest charting release landing at #8 in 1977 (Whitburn, 2013). According to groovyhistory.com (2021), Buffett was in Key West when he saw a number of tourists, the sight stuck with him. Then, when he was in Austin TX at Lung's Cocina del Sur on Anderson Lane in 1976, he discovered the margarita drink for the first time and was inspired. Buffett and his band set the structure for the song and put on the finishing touches back in Key West. It turns out, Buffett said that the song was suppose to be recorded by Elvis Presley, but he passed away in Aug of 1977 and never got around to recording the song (groovyhistory.com, 2021).
