God Punishes Us - Overview | Lie #1: God Punishes Us Series | Part 1

God punishes us – the most important lie in the church we can address. It influences the way we relate to God, which then influences everything else.

I grew up in post-communist Romania, after 50 years of churches having been closed and any talk about God having been forbidden. When communism fell in 1989, everyone was so eager to be free but at the same time they were used to being told what to think, that nobody ever questioned the “religious” “traditions” that we all suddenly had to follow, or else God would certainly punish us.

I was actively discouraged from reading the Bible – I was told it was a sin, especially for a woman. I was told many lies about God, the biggest one being, “God punishes us.” Everything I learned was about performance. How God was up in heaven, sitting on His Throne, eager and ready to whip us all into shape whenever we made a mistake. I only heard the name “Jesus” and “the Holy Spirit,” but I had no idea who they were.

I was told that everything bad that happens to us is how God punishes us, and I eventually gave up trying to do the right thing because bad things kept happening anyway. The false teachings I learned growing up didn’t make any sense, and unfortunately, I ended up rejecting God all together, never occurring to me to actually read the Bible and find out what’s in there for myself.

But God works all things for the good of those who love Him, so when I finally turned to Him ready to change my life, I found out the truth that God does not punish us. Unfortunately, however, I’m not the only one who ended up believing this lie, since satan is actively trying to keep us away from God. So let’s find out the truth for ourselves – that God doesn’t punish us, and why.
