Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
We all know this phrase from the Declaration of Independence. It's been drilled in our heads from civics classes to speeches, especially around each July 4th holiday and rightfully so. Since our nation's founding, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have defined the American dream.
This Independence Day, those ideals and our country have come under attack. But I am and will always be proud to be an American, and am thankful for all those who have fought and sacrificed for our country. That's why in Congress, I have worked to defend our unalienable rights.
Life is the first fundamental right outlined in our founding document. As a dad, I believe every life has value and I am proud to be pro-life.
Sadly, this unalienable right has fallen under renewed attack as radical abortion advocates push for on-demand abortion, up until and even after birth, paid for by your tax dollars. For decades, the Hyde Amendment has prohibited tax dollars from funding abortions and received overwhelmingly bipartisan support. In fact, the Hyde Amendment has been renewed every year since 1976, under majorities and Presidents of both parties, including President Barack Obama.
But in a radical shift in policy, President Joe Biden recently released his budget which did not include pro-life protections or the Hyde Amendment. Americans must not be forced to violate their conscience to pay for abortions. That's why just last week, House Republicans demanded a vote on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. It's a sad commentary this bill even needs to be considered. But in the face of new threats from those who support abortion, I will never stop demanding we protect the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.
Liberty is another principle I will always defend, just as North Carolinians have done since before our founding. On April 12, 1776, North Carolina became the first colony to officially support separation from Great Britain. Today, we must continue to lead the nation in the defense of our liberties – especially our right to keep and bear arms.
Unfortunately, the Biden Administration has also declared war on the Second Amendment as they push policies that would have no impact on violence but would limit your freedoms and those of all law-abiding citizens. Also last week, I took to the House floor to highlight the importance of the 2nd Amendment. As crime rises across our country, legal gun ownership has reached record highs and these millions of Americans deserve to have theirs rights protected. That's why I'm leading efforts to push back against new regulations from the ATF and expand concealed carry reciprocity. The Second Amendment is the right that allows us to defend all our other rights, and it should not be infringed.
Finally, the pursuit of happiness is also something I care deeply about. What the Founders meant by this term is the opportunity for upward mobility. This is also a topic that was in the news last week in the form of talking about our border. Every year, legal immigrants flock to the United States for their own pursuit of happiness that is found in our nation of liberty. I welcome these immigrants who come legally to America, the greatest nation in the world. However, recently we have seen the dangers posed to our nation by illegal immigration.
In the last week, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each took a trip to the border to see the Biden Border Crisis firsthand. The Biden administration's plan to halt the construction of the wall and reinstate catch-and-release has had disastrous consequences. In the last month, Border Agents encountered 180,000 illegal immigrants at the border, the highest number in 21 years.
Unchecked illegal immigration allows cartels to maintain control and traffic families and drugs into the United States. These consequences of open border policies threaten the rights of all legal immigrants and citizens to pursue their own happiness – something that goes against our nation's founding. Last week, I highlighted policies that have worked and can work again to secure our border and protect our country. In order to maintain the pursuit of happiness for everyone, we must solve this border crisis.
The principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not just hollow words on an old, tattered document. Instead, they exemplify our country and must be fought for every day. As your Congressman, I will always defend your rights from those who would seek to destroy life, threaten our liberties, or endanger your pursuit of happiness as an American citizen. On this July 4th, I hope you have been able to enjoy time with family and friends, celebrating the rights we enjoy as Americans and all the things that make our country the greatest on Earth. What Is Freedom ?
Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. It is the quality or state of being free, characterized by the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action. This concept is often associated with liberty and autonomy, particularly in the sense of "giving oneself one's own laws". In modern liberal nations, freedom is considered a fundamental right, especially freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press.
Philosophically, freedom can be understood in different ways. Metaphysically, it means having control over one's thoughts and decisions, not being reduced to reacting to external causes. Morally, it involves the ability to live according to moral standards, to aspire to what is good, or to resist what is good. Isaiah Berlin distinguished between "negative" freedom, which is freedom from external obstacles, and "positive" freedom, which is the ability to fulfill one's purposes. The concept of freedom is context-dependent and has evolved historically, from its roots in ancient Greek philosophy to its modern interpretations in political and social discourse. It is also a central theme in human rights, as affirmed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees rights such as freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. Despite its importance, freedom remains a complex and sometimes contradictory idea, as it must balance individual autonomy with societal order and the rights of others.
What Age Does Your Freedom Start ?
A child's journey toward freedom begins from early childhood, as they gradually develop autonomy and independence. While children under the age of 11 or 12 generally should not go out alone due to developmental immaturity, the desire for freedom typically emerges around ages 11 or 12,coinciding with the onset of puberty and adolescence. This period marks a shift where children begin to demand more autonomy and freedom of movement and thought.
Developmentally, the focus of freedom evolves over time. In early adolescence (around ages 9–13), the primary focus is on freedom from being treated as a child, often expressed through a desire to act older. By mid-adolescence (ages 13–15), the emphasis shifts to freedom of association with peers, forming close friendships and a sense of identity separate from the family. In late adolescence (ages 15–18), experimentation with adult-like behaviors such as driving, dating, or part-time work becomes a priority as teens test boundaries and explore adult experiences. Finally, during trial independence (ages 18–23), the focus is on becoming self-governing, making independent life decisions, and managing responsibilities without parental oversight.
While some parents report giving children more independence around age 12,such as choosing their own haircut or managing homework, the full range of freedoms like traveling alone or making major life decisions typically develops gradually and is often tied to milestones like obtaining a driver’s license (around age 16–17) or reaching legal adulthood at age 18.It is important to note that brain development continues until around age 25, so while legal adulthood begins at 18, full cognitive maturity and decision-making capacity develop later. The process of granting freedom should be gradual, based on maturity, geographic safety, and consistent communication between parent and child.
How Much Freedom Should Parents Allow Teens to Have?
Sometimes, though, being too protective and/or rigid can backfire and the teen will rebel. The key is to create a balance between dependence and independence as the adolescent slowly transitions to adulthood, typically between the ages of 10 and 25.
The way I see it, my parents will give me as much freedom as I can prove to them that I can handle. If I show that I am responsible and do the things that they ask, then yeah, I anticipate that they will give me a little more freedom. I also expect that if my grades start slipping or they feel that I am not holding up my end of the bargain with the expectations that have been set, I expect them to tighten the reins again until I prove to them that I can do it and they will let me try again.
While many parents underestimate their teen’s readiness for certain privileges and freedoms, most teens overestimate their readiness to take on certain privileges and responsibilities. I typically tell teens that “freedom equals responsibility,” meaning that one needs to demonstrate responsible behavior before expecting to have certain freedoms. For example, if I am to have the freedom of driving a car, I need to demonstrate that I am responsible enough to follow traffic laws, have my driver’s license, car insurance, etc.
Parents and teens often experience a push/pull in their relationships when deciding what freedoms are appropriate for the teens to have, which can create a lot of stress within the family system. The fact a teen is motivated to push for more freedom and independence and the parent’s task is to guide and protect the teen means there is often discord. This is a normal part of the process of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. The transition is a period of regular readjustment and can intensify conflict between parents and teens.
Parents are responsible for instilling values in their children about what is right and what is wrong. Given that teens often feel a sense of entitlement to make their own decisions about issues that impact their lives, it is important for parents to have clarity about the contexts in which they will exercise their authority and in which contexts they will allow more freedom. While teens undoubtedly will make mistakes, parents need to trust them to make some of their own decisions and to learn from their missteps.
There is no way for parents to know for certain if their teen is going to make the wrong choices. The chances of a teen making the right choice are increased when parents believe in the teen’s ability to do so. That said, trust must be earned and in order to earn trust, teens must act responsibly. In order for teens to grow up, they need to have the opportunity to experience the freedom of making their own decisions (age appropriate) and the opportunity to learn from mistakes. When parents place a certain level of trust in their teen, the teen will be more likely to respect the parents as well as their rules.
So What Age Can I Leave Home Or Get Married ?
In the United States, the age at which you can legally leave home or get married varies significantly by state and depends on specific circumstances.
Leaving Home: There is no universal legal age to leave home in the U.S. Most states set the age of majority at 18,meaning you are legally considered an adult at that age and can live independently without parental consent. However, many young people move out earlier, often at 18 to start college or work, or later if they choose to stay with their parents.
You can legally move out at 16 if you are legally emancipated through a court order, by joining the military, or by getting married. Emancipation grants you legal independence from your parents, allowing you to make decisions about your own life, including where to live. If you are not emancipated, you generally need your parents' consent to live on your own or with a friend or relative.
Getting Married: The legal age to marry without any exceptions is 18 in most states. However, many states allow minors to marry under specific conditions. In 34 states, child marriage is legal due to various loopholes. Minors as young as 16 can often marry with parental consent or a court order. Some states require the minor to be legally emancipated.
In certain states, a minor can marry at 17 with parental consent and additional requirements, such as completing premarital education or proving the intended spouse is not more than a few years older. In some states, a minor can marry at 15 with parental consent and judicial approval.
The U.S. State Department and the United Nations have both condemned child marriage as a human rights abuse. As of 2025, 16 states have banned all underage marriages with no exceptions, with the most recent being Missouri in 2025. The right to life is the belief that a being has the right to live. Life is a process that creates itself, resulting in an unending flowering of forms. Living beings are alive because we change our forms, through conception, growth, diminishment, and death. The right to existence is the right to be alive; the right to live; the right to flourish. For you to be without the right to existence is to deny the truth that you are alive. Also, deny that you are a part of existence and deny that your life matters.
What does the right to Liberty really mean?
Liberty is the state of being free of unnecessary restrictions. Being free to make your own choices. Being free to experience your own life. The right to liberty is the right to be who you are. Also your right to liberty to become who you choose to become. The right to think what you choose to think. The right to feel what you choose to feel. Your right to liberty is your right to choose what you consent to and what you withhold your consent from. To be without the right to liberty is to deny the truth that you are free to live your life. That you are free to choose. That you are free to feel what you feel.
Liberty is choosing your destination or outcome. It comes from choosing and doing the right actions. The key to understanding and experiencing liberty lies in choosing the outcome we want versus receiving the outcome our path dictates. To choose liberty is to choose to stand up for Truth and Righteousness.
What is the pursuit of Happiness?
Happiness is the openness within your heart that allows you to feel a sense of oneness, freedom, gratitude, and joy. Secondly, the pursuit of Happiness is the attempt to attain and maintain that state of open-heartedness. The right to pursue happiness is the right to open your heart as you choose. It is the right to love as you choose. Also, the right to love your freedom or to love your life.
What is the value of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
The valuing of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the values of humanity. Also the respect for humility and harmony.
Humanity is the collective human experience, the aspect of being a human being. To value humanity is to value being human more than abstractions, more than money, fame, or power. Secondly to value humanity is to value the reality of our lives. Also, our liberties, and our pursuit of happiness, are complete with their ups and downs, twists and turns.
Humility is the grounded Ness of our existence, the balancing of the highs with the lows of existence. To value humility is to value the ground on which we stand just as much as the stars above. To value humility is to value the frailty and limitations of our human existence. Also valuing our fumbles, flaws, and failures as essential parts of the great play of life.
Harmony is the cooperative coming together of life in action. To value harmony is to value the beauty of consonance over dissonance. To value harmony is to value the synergy of collective action, and the immensity of the orchestral symphony. Also, the unity available in diversity, allows the whole to be far greater than the sum of its parts.
Now more than ever, we as Americans must affirm the values of humanity, humility, and harmony.
We must affirm the truths of our human shared reality rather than the falsehoods, fiction, and illusions that reside in our stories. We must affirm that, yes our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable, unassailable, and unbreakable. But, this time, let’s not feign exclusivity. This time, let’s include all of us. This time, let’s embrace life, liberty, and happiness for all because they are not just our rights, they belong to everyone.
We’ve defined Freedom as the capability of choosing an action. Choosing liberty results in experiencing the ultimate level of freedom. This life is a time for us to be “tried, to be tested, or to choose.” Our decisions determine our destiny. Those who choose liberty will forever have happiness.

All religion is a tool to have more control over the people's thoughts and behavior. Now religion is basically a pyramid scheme making the few at the top rich. Why does a church need a 33 million dollar compound with multiple buildings? Why does the pastor usually drive a nice new Mercedes or BMW while the flock struggles and still gives the church money every week? Don't people join the church to change their life and help others the same way? It's like politicians, they should almost be volunteer jobs or just low paying. Otherwise you just keep getting people who want more money regardless of how they get it. Take from the poor and keep it doesn't sound like caring for the people. For the most part big churches were corrupted centuries ago with power hungry people. Now it's greed, a larger flock or church means they get more money every week!!

The natural right to keep & bear arms protects all of our other natural rights. Two of the very few reasons government exists is to protect the country and protect the natural rights of its citizens. However, the government, fed and state, have abandoned their purpose and have made themselves the enemy of America and Americans.
