presents episode 2399 | DR BEN BIKMAN w/ Digital Social Hour: Sean Kelly

Digital Social Hour, Sean Kelly, interviewing Dr Ben Bikman, BYU...
some ethnicities have lower tolerance to fat...
Example: caucasian, add 10 pounds fat to body, not unhealthy
same male, but Chinese, add 10 pounds,
-now has fatty liver disease, high BP, pre-diabetes
the Fat threshold is different: at what point of
added body fat does it become pathogenic?
Differences in ethnicities are genetic
Healthiest place to store body fat: subcutaneous
Most problematic: visceral fat storage
-fat tucked in between organs of abdomen

Studies of men and women, having same percent of body fat,
Asians will have more located centrally, even in liver...
-fat causes liver to become diseased
Nutrition is a severe problem globally--now it is the global diet:
-high processed fat and high sugar/processed carbs
Asian and Indian body types have lowest
tolerance for storing fat in heathy ways

Measuring body fat percentage...
-calipers to pinch skin: does not account for visceral fat
-MRI or DEXA scan will measure all types of fat
Simple, at-home test: measure biggest part around belly, X2
-if that number is less than your height, suggests you are okay
Sean Kelly: skinny, young, runner--had ultra low body fat,
but: recent scan: visceral fat everywhere
In the liver? likely...most Asians: fat goes there
Most likely cause besides genetics?
-alcohol & fructose
Both metabolized in the liver, so it becomes
overwhelmed

Liver, when overwhelmed, turns it into body fat...
-careful of fruit also: don't drink juice; don't eat sugary fruits
Recent study: same calories: 2 groups, low carb vs high carb
low carb: significantly lower percentage of liver fat
