Support for a digital Canadian dollar was highest among teens and young adults, while older Canadians were particularly skeptical, questioning its necessity, security, and the privacy of their personal information. The study concluded that broad early adoption of a digital dollar is unlikely, given that current payment methods meet the needs of most Canadians. It also emphasized that financially vulnerable groups, who might benefit the most from a digital payment option, are the most resistant to adopting it. Key considerations for a successful digital currency include universal merchant acceptance, low costs, ease of access, and strong privacy features. Although some government officials champion digital currencies as the future, critics argue they could be used as a tool for control, similar to China’s social credit system. It has previously been reported that a public survey by the BOC showed a strong preference for retaining cash and not proceeding with a digital version of the Canadian dollar. In August, the BOC acknowledged that a CBDC is not currently necessary, as many Canadians still rely on cash for transactions. The bank indicated that a digital currency would only be introduced if consumer demand justified it. They're also banning private cars in the center of Paris and have already banned short haul domestic flights.
