The study concluded that broad early adoption of a digital dollar is unlikely, given that current payment methods meet the needs of most Canadians. It also emphasized that financially vulnerable groups, who might benefit the most from a digital payment option, are the most resistant to adopting it. Key considerations for a successful digital currency include universal merchant acceptance, low costs, ease of access, and strong privacy features. Although some government officials champion digital currencies as the future, critics argue they could be used as a tool for control, similar to China’s social credit system.
