Angel of the Morning (Merrilee Rush, 1968; Juice Newton, 1981). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-11-05. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Angel of the Morning," written by Chip Taylor, was Merrilee Rush's only top 40 hit peaking at no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968, while Juice Newton's version rose to no. 4 on the chart in 1981 (Whitburn, 2013). Writer Chip Taylor stated: "I wrote Angel of the Morning after hearing The Rolling Stones song Ruby Tuesday on the car radio when I was driving into New York City. I wanted to capture that kind of passion" (P. North, Edmonton journal, Fri. 08, 1997, p. 27). According to Taylor, he wrote the song in 20 minutes; "the emotion just totally took over and carried me. It was magic" (forgottenhits, 2024).

Lyrics:

There'll be no strings to bind your hands
Not if my love can't bind your heart
And there's no need to take a stand
For it was I who chose to start
I see no need to take me home
I'm old enough to face the dawn

Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Then slowly turn away

Maybe the sun's light will be dim
And it won't matter anyhow
If morning's echo says we've sinned
Well, it was what I wanted now
And if we're victims of the night
I won't be blinded by the light

Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Then slowly turn away
I won't beg you to stay with me
Through the tears of the day, of the years
Baby, baby, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
