Needle and the Damage Done, The (Neil Young, 1972). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-11-18. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Needle and the Damage Done, The," written by Neil Young, was a song Young wrote in response to Danny Whitten's addiction to heroin and others users Young knew; Whitten was a founding member of Young's band Crazy Horse and died of a heroin overdose a few months after the song was released (songfest, 2024). According to Young, "I got to see a lot of great musicians who nobody ever got to see for one reason or another. Strangely enough, the real good ones that you never got to see was [because] of heroin . . . That started happening over and over. Then it happened to someone that everyone knew about. So I just wrote a little song” (L. Liebig, americansongwriter, Aug. 29, 2023). The song was recorded live at Royce Hall, UCLA, Jan. 30, 1971 and released on Neil Young's "Harvest" LP in 1972 (B. Lloyd, beatcrave, Jan. 4, 2024 ).

Lyrics:

I caught you knockin' at my cellar door
I love you, baby, can I have some more?
Ooh, ooh, the damage done

I hit the city and I lost my band
I watched the needle take another man
Gone, gone, the damage done

I sing the song because I love the man
I know that some of you don't understand
Milk blood to keep from running out

I've seen the needle and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie's like a settin' sun
