March 27, 2024 "In a conversation with Eva Bartlett, Brian Gerrish (UK Column) learns what takes a young woman from Canada to travel to explore the world. Bartlett (2007) paid for herself to go to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip (2008-2013) to understand what was really happening. Eva paid a price for her courage on the front lines: she suffered physical harm from Israeli soldiers & from illegal Jewish colonists; she endured arrest, shackling and custody by the Israeli police; and she experienced the trauma of being in the firing line when Israeli troops targeted live rounds against unarmed Palestinian protestors—a frequent occurrence. Eva visited Syria (2014-2021, 15 times), rather than relying on the reports of others while observing from a distance. Western media reports on the Syrian war were heavily distorted to meet what she clearly regards as a US-UK-NATO official line. It was in the Donetsk environs that Eva was to understand the horrors of the Ukrainian shelling and rocket attacks that the Russian civilian population has endured for nearly a decade. She spoke with local families, she witnessed the destruction, and she filmed and reported the reality of the dead bodies and parts of bodies of those killed in recent attacks. Placing herself at risk on the front line of conflict zones, Eva Bartlett has then had to defend herself against vile and dangerous social media and related attacks. On September 6, 2018, the day of the opening of the 60th Damascus International Fair, I spoke to Aleppo MP Fares Shehabi. He spoke of the fair and fairs prior, noting that last year's fair was bombed by what the West dubs "moderate" terrorists [https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-mortar/six-people-killed-in-mortar-attack-at-damascus-fair-monitor-idUSKCN1B00MX], and that for 6 years the fair was not held at all, again due to the terrorists who were surrounding Damascus. Those in eastern Ghouta, the so-called 'rebels', al-Qaeda gangs, they targeted the entry of this fair and killed some people, visitors and participants. One lady from old Damascus, was killed, she was participating in this fair—she had a clothing garment factory—and she was killed at the door, along with three or four people. Thank God the Syrian army liberated eastern Ghouta and we don't have any more terrorists there, and everybody's free now, and safe—that's most important.” "We expect high participation from many countries and local firms. It's about a political statement, an economic statement, that we won this war and we will win also the reconstruction war, and this is just one proof of it." This year, with eastern Ghouta and areas around Damascus liberated of terrorists, the fair can proceed in peace. Eid al Celib, Maaloula. When terrorists occupied Maaloula, this ancient tradition was not held, the only time in it's nearly 1700 year history, Maaloula resident Abdo Haddad told me last year when the festival resumed. More on this history: "The celebration dates back to 320 AD, when Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, sent officials to Jerusalem to find the Holy relic of the cross on Mount Golgotha, which they did on 14 September. A 60 mm shell was fired at our hotel at around 7:30 this morning, hitting roughly 20 metres away, causing the injuries of bystanders. A second shell was also fired in the vicinity. On the morning of April 15, "rebels" in the Jobar district shelled a Damascus elementary school, killing one child and injuring at least 62 more, some of whom are critically-injured, some of whom lost limbs. A second school--a kindergarten--was also shelled the same morning, in the same densely-inhabited Christian area of Damascus, injuring 3 more children.
