O No Illegal Immigrant Are Now Eating Beef Hamburgers Truth About Eating All Meats
O No Illegal Immigrant Are Now Eating Beef And Why Don't We Eat Cats, Dogs, Horses, And Rain-Deer. So Now Voters Believe That Haitian Immigrants Are Eating Cats, Dogs, Geese, Human Meat And Other Pets In America Today. Trump repeats baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating pets ? Is it a baseless or not claim that illegal immigrants from Haiti and others have been eating domestic pets in a small Ohio city has been repeated by Donald Trump.
During ABC's presidential debate, Trump said: "In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there."
But city officials have told BBC Verify there have been “no credible reports" that this has actually happened.
The baseless claim (Is It ?) had spread on social media, with Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance promoting it on X. The post has had more than 11 million views.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby called Vance's comments "dangerous" and a "conspiracy theory... based on an element of racism".
Where did the claim come from ?
The claim appears to have come from a number of different sources which have been turned into a cohesive - though baseless - story by pro-Trump social media accounts.
At a 27 August meeting of Springfield’s city commission, a local resident who describes himself as a social media influencer launched into a speech against Haitian immigrants.
He gave a long list of grievances, including that they were slaughtering park ducks for food, and accused city officials of being paid to bring in immigrants, but provided no evidence for these claims.
A claim about a cat being killed by Haitian immigrants was made on a Facebook post focusing on crime in Springfield, and attributed by the poster to the friend of a neighbor's daughter.
During the presidential debate on Tuesday, Trump also claimed to have seen “people on television [saying] ‘My dog was taken and used for food’”.
BBC Verify has looked at archive video of every major US broadcaster, including Fox, CNN and CBS. We also used keywords to search for relevant video on social media, and have not identified any televised interview of this nature.
Separately, a news report - as well as police bodycam footage - from late August about a woman arrested for killing and eating a cat has also been circulating online.
Many right-wing commentators have referred to the woman as Haitian and pointed to the report as evidence for the baseless claim that Haitian immigrants have been engaged in similar activity.
However, the incident took place in Canton, Ohio, about 170 miles (273km) away from Springfield.
Canton Police told the BBC that the suspect was born in 1997 and that she was a US citizen. The department also told us "we have not dealt with any complaints of Haitian immigrants at all."
BBC Verify spoke to the Springfield City Commission about the claims.
Officials told us: “There have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”
Claims of other incidents
The claims have also been reflected in a post on Reddit with a photo of a man carrying what appears to be a dead goose in Columbus, Ohio.
On 10 September, the conservative news outlet, The Federalist, published a story with an audio recording allegedly from a non-emergency call to police in Springfield. The caller claimed to have seen four Haitians carrying four geese.
The article also features what is meant to be a police report from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office about the call which it says was made on 26 August.
BBC Verify contacted the sheriff’s office and asked them whether the audio recording and police report were true.
It directed us to a Springfield City government spokesperson who said "these claims were not substantiated".
Memes go viral
Elon Musk has posted memes referring to the baseless claims which have been viewed millions of times.
Charlie Kirk, the CEO of conservative activist group Turning Point, said: “Residents of Springfield, OH are reporting that Haitians are eating their family pets”.
And official Republican party social media channels, such as the Republican House Judiciary Committee X account, have also referred to the claims.
The account posted an AI-generated image of former president Trump hugging a duck and a cat with the caption “Protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio!”.
That post was seen nearly 70 million times.
The BBC has contacted the Trump campaign for comment.
On Tuesday, Vance appeared to row back on his previous comment and said on X: "It's possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false."
But he added: "keep the cat memes flowing".
On Sunday, when challenged about the claim on CNN, he replied: "The evidence is the first-hand account of my constituents who are telling me this happened." "If i have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what i'm going to do", he added.
Haitian immigrants in Springfield
Springfield, a rust belt city in south-west Ohio, is home to about 60,000 people and has seen thousands of immigrants arrive in recent years.
Many are from Haiti, and city officials say up to 20,000 have made Springfield home in recent years, reversing a long decline that saw the city’s population drop by more than 20,000 over the last 60 years.
The new arrivals have revitalized local industrial companies but have also put a strain on public services. Vance, a senator representing Ohio who grew up about an hour away from Springfield, has repeatedly talked about the city on the campaign trail.
Illegal Immigrant Are Consumes Pets ?
Based on the provided search results, there is no evidence to support the claim that illegal immigrants, specifically Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, are eating cats and dogs. The claims made by Donald Trump and others have been thoroughly debunked by local officials, police, and residents.
Here are some key findings:
Springfield Police Department: In a statement, the police department clarified that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.
Canton Police Department: Bodycam footage from a woman’s arrest in Canton, Ohio, for killing and eating a cat was misattributed to Haitian immigrants. The suspect is actually a lifelong Canton resident, not a Haitian immigrant.
Local residents: Many residents, including those who have interacted with Haitian immigrants, have denied the allegations and expressed concerns about the misinformation spreading online.
Immigration status: Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are in the country legally and eligible to apply for Temporary Protected Status, according to the city’s website.
It’s essential to rely on credible sources and fact-check information before spreading claims, especially those that perpetuate harmful stereotypes and misinformation about marginalized communities. The search results demonstrate that this claim has been thoroughly debunked, and it’s crucial to avoid perpetuating false narratives.
H.R. 6720 (115th): Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2018 - H.R. 6720 amends the Animal Welfare Act to prohibit the transportation, delivery, possession, and slaughter of dogs and cats for human consumption. The bill includes a $5,000 penalty and an exception for Indian tribes for the purpose of a religious ceremony.
Commercial sales of dog and cat meat are illegal in the United States, but the vast majority of states do not have a prohibition on the killing of dogs and cats for human consumption. Therefore, an individual can kill and eat a dog or cat or sell the meat directly to another person.
Currently five states – California, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Virginia – either specifically bar the butchering of dogs and cats for human consumption or prohibit practices in order to prevent the development of a dog and cat meat trade.
While consuming dog and cat meat in the United States is not common practice, there are documented cases of stolen pets being slaughtered and sold, restaurants selling dog or cat meat, and breeders raising dogs and cats for human consumption. However, punishments have been limited in these instances due to a lack of clear Federal authority.
Countries Eating Cats & Dogs
Based on the provided search results, the following countries have been identified as consuming cats and dogs:
China: China is the largest consumer of dog and cat meat globally, with an estimated 10 million dogs and 4 million cats slaughtered annually. The practice is more common in certain regions, such as Yulin, where an annual dog and cat meat festival was previously held.
South Korea: Dog meat dishes, known as Gaegogi, are common in South Korea. Although the consumption of dog meat has declined in recent years, it is still practiced in some regions.
Vietnam: Cat meat is consumed in Vietnam, particularly in the north. However, the trade is mostly done underground, and the majority of the population is unaware of its existence.
Cambodia: Animal welfare organizations estimate that 2-3 million dogs are slaughtered annually for their meat in Cambodia.
Indonesia: In North Sulawesi, a market was banned from selling dog and cat meat.
Syria: During wartime, starving refugees have been encouraged to eat stray cats and dogs.
Cameroon: The Vame people, a minority group, eat dogs as part of their religious rituals.
It’s essential to note that the consumption of cats and dogs is often stigmatized and may be illegal in some countries. Additionally, the search results highlight the decline of this practice in many countries, with increasing awareness and protests against animal cruelty.
15 Countries where people eat dogs and cats.

1. China:
Chinese were among the first people to domesticate dogs and cats and keep them as pets. There are close to 130 million pet dogs in China— average one dog per 10 people. In spite of this eating and selling dog meat is a perfectly legal — thousands of year old tradition in China. Ancient Chinese writings from the Zhou Dynasty mention –pig, goat, and dog — among “three beasts” bred for food. Every year close to 10 Million with dogs skinned alive. Cat and dog meat also referred to as “fragrant meat” is openly sold in restaurants. Dog meat is believed to raise body temperature, boost overall health; promote warmth, blood circulation, and male fertility.
China is the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of fur garments, mostly made from mink, fox, and raccoon dog. Shangcun about 100 kilometers south of Beijing is the nerve center of Chinese fur-pelt industry. More than 60 percent of the unprocessed fur is traded here on the streets and in open-air markets. China also boasts of the largest dog skins industries in the world. There are no restrictions on fur trade in China—farmers can breed or slaughter any animals as they feel fit. As a result, animals bleed to deaths for every year. Many of them are still alive and struggling when they are hang by their legs or tails for skinning them. In many cases, the animal has no option but to kick and writhe in pain. Some of them are still alive after they have been skinned.
2. South Korea:
In South Korea there are over 20,000 restaurants—offering dog meat. Apart from these, dog meat eating festivals are routinely held and up to 15,000 dogs and cats are consumed every day. The dog meat industry is estimated to be worth US$2 billion. In spite of this there is no clear law governing the dog meat trade. Dog meat farms are spread all over the countryside. Every year over 2.5 Million dogs and over 100,000 tons of dog meat are consumed annually. Dog meat consumption particularly increases during summer months because of the belief that eating dogs keep one cool.
3. Philippines:
Eating dog meat is not uncommon in the Philippines where half a million dogs get slaughtered annually. Dog meat is the third most popularly consumed meat after pork and goat. Asocena – a Filipino dish primarily consisting of dog meat. Aso is a Filipino word for dog and cena means dinner or evening meal. The city of Baguio, in the Island province of Benguet, is the hub of dog meat trade.
4. Vietnam:
Fried cat meat and beer is a popular dish in Hanoi. The process starts with smashing the cat’s head with a hammer and drowning it before removing its fur. Similarly dogs are eaten in Vietnam which has a hundreds of years old tradition of worshipping stone statues of dogs because men want to be as strong and energetic as the dogs their ancestors used to worship. A 49-year old woman called Ly was arrested for cruelty to animals in Sham Shui Po after the meat of local stray dogs was found in her Vietnamese restaurant. She was arrested after Heung a local resident called the police after witnessing the butchering of a dog. The dog head’s eyes and teeth were sticking out. The police were reluctant to register a case and initially let off the suspect but when Heung posted his experience on Facebook, the police had to act. Dog meat is popular, relatively expensive, dinner time restaurant meal eaten throughout Vietnam which devours about five million animals a year. Dog meat is said to bring good fortune. There are many dog and cat meat restaurants and eateries all over Vietnam. But instead of writing Thit Cho (dog meat), or Thit Meo (cat meat) they have learnt to use the words ‘Thit Cay’ meaning ‘meat of small and medium-sized animals’ to avoid controversies. The economics of the trade is that 20 kilograms of dog meat can fetch around $100—just about the monthly salary of a Vietnamese worker.
Son Dong, in Thanh Hoa province, is the epicenter of Vietnam’s dog-meat industry. Thousands of dogs arrive here on their long and tortuous road to death. They are kept here for days and force-fed rice to increase their weight before being stuffed in cages and transported to slaughterhouses.
5. Thailand:
The dog meat and dog skin is a flourishing trade in Thailand. The town of Ta Rae in Thailand along the Mekong River is the hub for illicit dog stealing, smuggling, and trafficking. Dog thieves use makeshift stun guns connected to motorcycle batteries, to knock out pet dogs. The unconscious animal is then tied on the back of their motorbike and sold to traders for less than HK$100 each and land up in the hands of smugglers.
The Thai Smugglers then take the animals across the Mekong River to Laos, from where they are shipped to Vietnam by road in crowded, inhumane cages.
On the other hand the dog skin industry is centered in Sakon Nakhon in Northeast Thailand. An estimated 2,000 dogs are stolen and smuggled across the border every week to Vietnam and China to rake in the profits from the sale. Christmas is peak time for dog meat consumption in Vietnam which has the 5th largest dog-eating Roman Catholic population in Asia. Dog skins are used to make golf gloves and drums, besides being used as low-cost linings by the shoe-makers. The soft and flexible dog scrotums are highly prized for golf gloves. Dog skin is exported to Japan, China, and Taiwan for use in the musical instruments and sometimes end up in the form of rawhide bones for pet dogs to chew upon.
6. Laos:
Laos is a dog trafficking hub between Thailand and Vietnam. It is among the 25th hungriest nation in the world out of the list of the 56 nations with the worst hunger situation. Almost every night thousands of stolen and stray dogs are caught and smuggled across the Mekong River from Thailand to Laos en route to Vietnam.
7. Taiwan:
Dog meat is called “fragrant meat” in Taiwan. Dogs, especially black dogs are eaten in the winter months to retain body warmth. The Taiwanese parliament passed a law banning people from eating dog meat and imposed a fine of $300 for anyone found violating the law. The ban was introduced in 1988 to avoid adverse publicity during the Seoul Olympics. In spite of this dog meat is part of the menu in over 100 restaurants throughout Taiwan where the ban has not been effectively enforced.
8. Indonesia:
A majority of the predominantly Muslim population of Indonesia consider eating dog or pork meat as unclean and haraam (forbidden by religion) but this does not prevent the Minahasa an ethnic Christian majority tribal community in Indonesia from traditionally eating dogs, cats, forest rats, and fruit bats. Same goes for the Toraja an ethnic mostly Christian people inhabiting the mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Even people belonging to the Batak Toba culture eat a dish called saksang made from dog meat stew. The Bataks of northern Sumatra considered dog meat to be a festive dish, reserved for celebrations like weddings and Christmas. Traditionally dog meat has been consumed by non-Muslims but not even Muslim have started eating dog meat in violation of their faith. A popular Indonesian dog meat dish is called rintek wu’uk rica-rica (dog meat).
There is a flourishing black market for stolen dogs in Bali. Dog catchers steal around 6-10 dogs every night and earn $2.50 per dog from the dog meat factories.
9. Polynesia:
Dog meat is part of Polynesian and Hawaiian history. In the past meat of the Hawaiian poi dog was considered a delicacy reserved for consumption during feasts and religious festivals. It was only served to men and considered ‘kapu’ or forbidden for women. Traditionally dogs were supposed to be eaten only by the royalty and considered to be a food for the god’s. The French and English missionaries tried to stop the practice, but the Polynesians don’t seem inclined to give up. Today it is illegal to eat dog, but this doesn’t stop the Polynesian people from eating dogs. The whole trade goes on underground. Dog meat sells for around 5,000 Fcfp to cater to the demand from the local Polynesian and Chinese inhabitants.
10. Canada:
Dog meat is legally sold at restaurants in Canada. It is not illegal to consume dog and cat meat in Canada. The slaughter of food animals is a licensed activity in Canada, which means operators must obtain a license. For a meat plant operator to get a license for dog meat, it must be proven that the dogs fit within the definition of food animals. Food animals are “mammal or bird raised in captivity–whose meat or meat or by-products were for human consumption.” So to obtain a license you have to prove that the dogs were raised explicitly for food and not keep as pets. You also need to slaughter the dog in front of federal inspectors, to ensure that the process was done hygienically. As a result, there are no licensed plants approved to slaughter dogs but there is a big unregulated and unhygienic, underground dog and cat meat market in Canada.
11. Africa:
Dog meat is a booming business in Africa. Due to the big demand for dog meat, dogs are more expensive than goats and sheep of the same size in parts of Africa. For instance, a one-year-old dog may easily fetch GH¢25 as compared to goat or sheep of the same size for a little under GH¢10. Customers often queue to buy cooked dog meat.
Dogs are eaten for their medicinal powers in Nigeria. Tribes in southern Nigeria regard dog meat as the best meat. They believe that it boosts libido, cures malaria and is a good juju against evil spirits. Tallensi a tribe in northern Ghana consider dog meat to be a delicacy. The Frafra and Dagaaba — two Tribes in Ghana consume dog meat to strengthen the common bond between the two tribes. Every year members of the two tribes participate in common games. A Dog Head is given as trophy to the winning tribe.
12. Switzerland:
A small percentage of Swiss population secretly eats cats, dogs, and horses. Eating cat and dog meat is part of Christmas celebrations. While there are no commercial slaughterhouses for cats and dogs, farmers kill the animals themselves. “Unmentionable Cuisine,” a 1979 book on taboo food around the world by Calvin Schwabe, detailed the Swiss recipe for dried dog meat. Swiss cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen have a tradition of eating dog meat, preserving it as sausages, as well as using it for medicinal purposes.
13. Arctic and Antarctic:
Dogs are useful for transportation, navigation and survival food for people in Siberia, Alaska, and Greenland. Dogs are supposed to get a premonition about bad weather and can smell the thin ice. Still sled dogs were considered “meat on the hoof”. They are killed and eaten when food supplies dwindle. The weakest of the lot are eaten by other dogs in the pack. Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen had to eat sled dogs during his expedition to the South Pole.
14. Mexico:
A customer in the Mexican border town of Tijuana was horrified when he saw the kitchen staff of a restaurant killing a dog. But before they could serve the dog meat disguised as pork in the chow mien, the customer called the cops. The police officers in the raid found caged dogs in the kitchen, a decapitated puppy in the trash. The owner was caught red-handed putting dog meat in a cooking pot.
According to reports, many private houses throughout Mexico are being used as illegal dog slaughterhouses and dog meat is surreptitiously sold at taco stands and cantinas to unsuspecting customers.
Dogs were symbolically an important part of the Aztec mythology. It is said that dogs continued to serve their masters even after death and guided the deceased to reach Mictlan the place of the dead. Archeologists were surprised to find skeletons of a dozen dogs buried together in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan some 500 years ago.
What is even stranger is that the Aztecs ate dogs and raised the animals mostly for food.
15. Myanmar:
Once believed to be guardians of temples and favorite pet of the royalty, the Burmese cat has all but vanished. In spite of an official ban, roadside restaurants serve ‘little tiger’ (cat meat) which is a favorite snack to be had with drinks in the evening. A lot of people eat cat meat that is a novelty. Unlike dog meat that is eaten throughout the month, people eat cat meat at the beginning of the lunar month. Cat meat which is said to be sweet and tender than a dog is extremely popular. The asking rate is between US$50 – $70 per cat depending on the size.
Though consumption of dog meat is considered taboo, exporting live-dogs to China is a highly-profitable business in Myanmar. The town of Pa-late near Mandalay is full of warehouses where the dogs are held captive before being trucked across the Mandalay-Muse border. An average-sized dog fetches between US$ 15 to $ 20.
All About Horse Meat: History, Flavor, and Where It’s Eaten. History of Horse Meat
There is a lot of controversy over the consumption of horse meat. It is largely reviled in some nations, such as the UK and parts of the US, but it is a staple source of protein and even considered a delicacy in others.
The truth is that horse meat has been rooted for centuries in the cuisine of many countries. It gained wide acceptance in French cuisine during the Second French Empire, in the late 19th century, when it was a cheap alternative to beef, making it popular with inhabitants of the expensive city of Paris.
In America, it became popular during World War 2, when other meats became scarce. Horse meat was the perfect replacement, being cheap and also healthier than beef. In Japan, from the 6th century to the 1860s, consumption of all four-legged animals was banned. However, with the rapid advancement of technology in the 1960s, when horses were not needed for transport, work or agriculture, they became a source of food.
In Central Asia, horse meat is still one of the main sources of protein and commonly used to prepare a variety of dishes. In Uzbekistan, horse meat is used to prepare naryn, one of the most popular local foods, while in Kyrgyzstan it is used to make a popular sausage. There are, however, regional exceptions, such as Turkmenistan, where horse and pork meat are forbidden due to religious beliefs.
In recent decades, there has been more discussion about the moral issues around eating horse. This has led to it being banned and even being illegal in some countries. Due to this and several awareness campaigns, the demand for horse meat has fallen.
What does horse meat taste like?
Horse meat is lean and tastes very similar to beef and venison. This sweet gaminess makes it delicious when cooked or eaten raw, when it can be compared to tuna. Grilled horse tastes very similar to beef, with the fat rendering down, making it even sweeter. What is more, horse is lower in fat, calories, and cholesterol and is high in protein making it much healthier than you might expect.
Where Horse Meat is Eaten?
Tatar Horse Meat Tenderloin
Although eating horse meat is frowned upon in many places throughout the world, it is eaten in many countries for example, in Asia, Europe, and South America. China is the world’s biggest consumer and producer of horse meat according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
2018 figures put the number of horses slaughtered in China at 1.6 million and the total amount of horse meat produced at approximately 220,100 US tons. Here, it is commonly used in sausages and, in southern Guangxi, rice noodle dishes .
The FAO also says Kazakhstan is number two in the world in horse consumption. It is typically used in sausages and a Kazakhstan dumpling called manti. Russia, Italy, Mexico, Mongolia, Argentina, and Japan are also top consumers of horse meat.
Different Cuts of Horse Meat
Horse Meat
Horses are near identical to cattle when it comes to cuts of meat, so there’s sirloin, tenderloin and ribeye. They can be prepared in the same way as beef although horse has a unique flavor that makes for a great twist on some classic dishes.
How Horse Meat is Prepared
Different cuts of horse, similar to beef, are suited to different styles of cooking. Cuts with sinews of connective tissue and muscle are best suited for stews, where they can be cooked for longer to make them more tender. Cuts from the back and rear of the horse are more lean and tender so need less heat and can be eaten pink.
Raw
Sakuraniku
Raw horse meat is commonly consumed in Japan. Also known as sakuraniku, the blushing pink meat resembles that of sakura, or cherry blossoms.
Thin raw slices of horse meat are accompanied by ground ginger, garlic, spring onion, and a soy sauce dip in a dish called basashi. The cuts typical used are marbled belly, crunchy shoulder clod, and the surprisingly odorless liver and tongue. When consumed raw, the belly cuts are similar to tuna.
Hotpot
Sakura Nabe
Hotpot, or nabe in Japanese, is a traditional dish eaten in winter. A variety of vegetables and meat is stewed in a flavored broth, making it the perfect dish on a cold winter’s night. Hotpot with horse meat is specifically called sakura nabe and is common in Akita, Nagano, and Hokkaido prefectures.
Grilled
Grilled Horse Meat
While horse meat is traditionally eaten raw in Japan, restaurants today serve it grilled, particularly the yakiniku (Korean BBQ) restaurants. When grilled, it tastes very much like beef and depending on the cut, it can be either quite chewy or irresistibly tender.
Kazy
Kazy is a horse sausage that is commonly prepared in Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The meat and fat from the ribs is ground and formed into a sausage, typically seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper. Kazy sausages can either be smoked or unsmoked and are usually boiled.
Horse Meat Dish
In Europe, many countries use horse meat as steaks, burgers, and smoked meat. Smoked meat, such as sausages and salami, have been a staple in Germany, Hungary, and Finland. In Italy and Iceland horse meat replaces beef in stews.
Whilst horse meat can be found throughout the world, there are ongoing discussions about the morality of eating it. In some countries, there is a taboo and stigma to eating horse, but this controversial delicacy can be found in many areas.

Countries That Eat Reindeer
Based on the provided search results, the following countries have been mentioned as consuming reindeer meat:
Norway: Reindeer meat is widely sold on the island of Magerøya, where approximately 5,000 reindeer are owned by five Sami families. The meat is used in local cuisine, including dishes served on Hurtigruten cruises.
Finland: Reindeer meat is a traditional treat in Lapland, Finland’s northern region. Gordon Ramsay visited Lapland to cook and eat reindeer meat, showcasing its use in Finnish cuisine.
Additionally, the search results mention that reindeer meat is popular in Scandinavian countries in general, implying that other countries in the region, such as Sweden and Denmark, may also consume reindeer meat.
It’s worth noting that reindeer are an important part of the culture and economy for indigenous Sami people in Northern Europe, and their meat is a significant component of their traditional cuisine.
What Santa Won’t Tell You: Reindeer Meat Is Delicious... Here in America, reindeer are adorable red-nosed present-bringers. Over in Norway, they’re dinner.
Reindeer are to Norway as bald eagles are to America. If eagles represent our country’s soaring ambition and status as the world’s apex predator, reindeer mark the Norwegians as hardy, gentle, and impervious to cold. And yet, while it is difficult to imagine anyone in this country sitting down to a plate of eagle meat on July 4, Norwegians treat Christmastime less as a moment to fantasize about Santa’s little helpers and more as an occasion to feast upon them.
I had an inkling of this when I touched down recently for three nights in Oslo, but nothing quite prepared me for the sheer variety of offerings. I encountered smoked reindeer, grilled reindeer, reindeer pizza, reindeer tartare. I found it at markets, at restaurants—at the places one might expect—but also in places I didn’t even know existed, like the community of conjoined teepees I saw downtown, strung up with white Christmas lights and flying the Norwegian flag. This, I learned, was the Julemarked—a Christmas market celebrating the indigenous Sami people of the Norwegian north, where reindeer are traditionally herded and, at this time of year, slaughtered.
A glassy-eyed taxidermied buck (Dasher, is that you?) patrolled the entrance. Inside vendors sold reindeer fridge magnets and reindeer stuffed animals and reindeer zip-front polar fleece. An open fire was burning for warmth, and the teepees (known there as lavvu or “Sami tents”) were perfumed with woodsmoke. Manning a station called Taste of Norway, Einar Hoseth sliced up sausage samples and served them at knifepoint. I bought a reindeer sausage the relative shape and size of a police baton. It tasted bison-y, venison-y, iron-y and dark. Translating the ingredients from the Norwegian, I discovered that the sausage was made with salt, sugar, onion, and something called “bloodpulver” that I couldn’t translate directly but still got the gist of.
The next day, for lunch, I met Dronebrygg brewer Anders Dahl Monsen at pizzeria Lofthus located inside the imposing Kunstnernes Hus art gallery, which Monsen told me was designed around 1929 by “a famous Norwegian functionalist architect.” (It felt like being in a high-school gymnasium designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.) Over two of his Dronebrygg goses made with pineapple weed (“it’s in the chamomile family”), we split a white pizza topped with pomegranate seeds, fresh thyme, and reindeer carpaccio. The meat itself was nearly purple, which is common for reindeer, and it functioned sort of like a peppery prosciutto—less of a protein entrée, more of a meat condiment.
“Reindeer is the kind of meat that you want to serve as raw as possible,” chef Jonathan Janhed told me a couple days later, after I’d tried the reindeer tartare at his restaurant Arakataka. “Since it’s so gamy and so bloody, if you cook it too much you get a liver-y taste.” When you’re eating reindeer, the liver-y taste is what you don’t want. He builds flavor, texture, and a certain quintessential Norwegian-ness with two types of reindeer meat (raw and dried), juniper mayonnaise, crumbled rye, fermented beets, and pickled rose petals. It tastes like funky, skunky sloppy joe.
Still, my most Norwegian experience of all came at Mathallen, which is basically the Eataly of Norway—an upscale food hall located on the banks of the mighty Akerselva River in the awesomely named mixed-use complex Vulkan. There I found Ost & Sånt, where I discovered some reindeer sausages made with cumin, and others made with truffles. Meanwhile, the Cupcake & Pie Co. was selling personally portioned reindeer pot pie right next to the quiche lorraine, and the butchers at Annis Pølsemakeri purveyed jerky-style reindeer heart to gnaw on and fresh reindeer shank to cook at home (the latter for about $18.50 per pound, reasonable by Norway’s sadistically expensive standards). I opted for the reindeer salami, stippled with pork fat and rosemary flecks, which the butcher sliced into crimson coins and wrapped in reflective silver paper. I had never before wondered what pepperoni would taste like if it grew on a pine tree, but now I knew.
Gaining momentum as I made my rounds, I bought a moldy blue Norwegian cheese and a honey kombucha. (With palates shaped by centuries of short growing seasons, Norwegians love food that’s been smoked, cured, fermented, jammed, molded, or otherwise preserved.) I then sat down and spread out my lunch: meat, cheese, drink, and, for a sweet souvenir, a tin of cloudberry candy. My own Christmas reindeer feast, just below the North Pole.
Countries with Human Meat Consumption
No country legally condones or promotes the consumption of human meat. According to the search results, there is no evidence of any country where human flesh is explicitly legal or widely consumed.
However, there are some instances where individuals have confessed to eating human flesh, as reported in the search results. For example, in 2017, hundreds of people in South Africa allegedly confessed to eating human flesh, although this was not a widespread or sanctioned practice.
It’s essential to note that the consumption of human flesh is universally considered taboo and illegal across the globe due to moral, ethical, and public health concerns.
In summary, there is no country that legally permits or promotes the consumption of human meat. Any reported instances of human flesh consumption are isolated and likely illegal.
https://listverse.com/2012/03/04/top-20-human-cannibals-by-country/
Is It Legal to Eat Human Flesh ? By most accounts, humans are quite tasty.
"Like fully developed veal." — William Seabrook, author and journalist who spent time with a cannibal tribe in West Africa in the 1920s.
"Like pork. It tastes quite good." — Armin Meiwes, a German who ate large portions of a man who agreed to be killed and devoured in 2002.
"So sweet!" — Egyptian-born fashion model Omaima Nelson, describing the cooked ribs of the abusive husband whom she'd killed in 1991.
Despite these rave reviews, it's probably safe to assume that most people won't be inspired to find out for themselves anytime soon. Which is not surprising.
What is surprising, however, is the fact that in the U.S. there are no actual laws per se — with one exception — that prohibit the consumption of human flesh. In 49 states, you can at least theoretically eat human flesh and drink human blood in full view of a policeman and suffer no legal consequences. But if you try that in Idaho — the one exception — you could spend up to 14 years behind bars.
What the Law Does and Doesn't Say About Cannibalism
The absence of anti-cannibalism statutes (again, for the most part) doesn't mean, however, that the law is looking the other way.
For starters, of course, you can't kill someone and eat them. And it doesn't matter whether the person agrees to be killed (as was the case with Armin Meiwes, mentioned above, who spent eight years in prison for his act). Even with consent, it's still murder.
Second, laws forbid desecration of corpses.
But as Reuters revealed in an extensive 2017 expose, if you really want to buy human body parts, you can probably do so. While the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 prohibits the buying and selling of organs for transplantation, Reuters found that the law on organs used for education or research is lax.
"In most states," Reuters reported, "anyone can legally purchase body parts."
But be forewarned. In addition to questions about edibility, the prices for human body would be a deal breaker for most aspiring cannibals. In 2018, Westword newspaper examined the body trade in Colorado and found, for example, that one purveyor charged $200 for an elbow and $600 for an arm and shoulder.
Some people, however, have found affordable legal ways to indulge in cannibalism: Eat parts of yourself.
That's what a Reddit user calling himself Incredibly Shiny Shart did last year after his foot was amputated following a motorcycle accident and the surgeon let him keep it. He invited friends over for dinner, which included tacos made from his foot meat. Their assessment of the flavor: "beefy."

What does human flesh taste like?
When prepared by us, unbelievable. Of the meats you are likely to find in stores, pork is the closest match.
Where do you get your specialty meat?
Our avenues of procurement vary. Most of the businesses and institutions who supply us prefer to keep those relationships discreet. On the individual level, bodies are often bequeathed to us. For some, this is a way to supplement life insurance and offset funerary expenses. For others, such as Cannibal Club member Gwendoline Fenwich, who was served to her friends and relatives at the Club in January of 2008, being prepared as a meal, and thereby reborn into the bodies of the living, is an attractive alternative to the more traditional practices of burial and cremation.
We take considerable care to ensure that all our meat is produced legally and ethically, and derived only from young, healthy bodies.
Isn't cannibalism wrong?
Cannibalism, as traditionally practiced, usually shows respect to the deceased, who is desired to be reborn into the living, or offered as a worthy sacrifice to some deity. It is never our practice to debase or objectify human life. Arguments against cannibalism are typically grounded in ignorance, cultural prejudice, and nonsensical spiritual beliefs.
Doesn't cannibalism cause disease?
Prion diseases of the nervous system, such as kuru, are associated with the consumption of brain tissue, which is not part of our menu.

There are also individuals and small groups, often of adolescents, who have declared themselves Satanists to cultivate a transgressive or rebellious image. These individuals have sometimes engaged in criminal behaviour, including vandalizing churches, desecrating graves, and mutilating or killing animals. In a few rare instances, like that of the American serial killer Richard Ramirez and the Italian Beasts of Satan group, these self-professed Satanists have also committed murder.

Cannibalism is defined as the consumption of another human's body matter, whether consensual or not. In the United States, there are no laws against cannibalism per se, but most, if not all, states have enacted laws that indirectly make it impossible to legally obtain and consume the body matter. Murder, for instance, is a likely criminal charge, regardless of any consent. Further, even if someone consents to being eaten and ends their own life, the cannibal may still be liable for criminal or civil actions based on laws governing the abuse or desecration of a corpse, which vary by jurisdiction.

There is something deeply disquieting about cannibalism. Motives and technicalities do not matter; eating human flesh is now universally considered revolting, whatever the circumstances. However, if we trust a long line of anthropologists and ethnographers, this has not always been the case in all parts of the world and is therefore not self-evident. Stripped of all cultural context and psychological connotations and in purely detached terms, the act of cannibalizing a corpse might be considered a victimless crime, the victim of the act being a lifeless body destined to decay anyway. And yet, cannibalism is instinctively perceived in virtually all cultures today as grisly violence and, more than that, a violation of all that makes us human. It is probably this perception that led some scholars to question whether human beings could ever have engaged in such practices, except in the most wretched conditions.
