After many years I’ve discovered that instilling the respect for water is crucial no matter how strong of a swimmer your child is. There are really only two paths you can take in order to teach swimming. One is to gain the swimming teaching qualification and get a job at a swim school, or you can try providing this service on your own. Exactly 20 years ago, I was attempting to enter the University of Physical Education in Katowice, Poland where I come from. I guess back then you could call me an athlete and a seriously committed sports person. I was playing for a football club, aspiring to become a coach or a PE teacher one day. Unfortunately my fear of water and inability to swim shattered those dreams durning the entry swimming test. Unfortunately, life didn’t really give me another chance to try again as I had to choose a different career path and take care of my family responsibilities. When I was in primary school, I had this quite intense PE teacher who was taking his sports very seriously. He also treated all of his pupils like the next Olympic athletes pushing them hard, sometimes unreasonably hard no matter the weather conditions or whether they wanted it or not.. At the beginning, I looked up to this person and his attitude had a huge impact on me both positively and negatively in my development as a man.
