Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, studying a clan of sperm whales in theEast Caribbean, found the mammals use clicks to tell other whales who they are.

Sperm whales are known to be very sociable andcommunicate with each other across thousands ofmiles with a series of rhythmic clicks, called codas.

Researchers have analysed recordings from 60different members of the Eastern Caribbean spermwhale clan to create what they call a "sperm whalephonetic alphabet" of different click combinations.
