Perhaps the disciples thought that everything would be smooth sailing when they chose to follow Jesus, but in Luke 8:22-25 they find themselves on the brink of death while being tossed about by wind and waves. Jesus makes a statement in Luke 20:17-19 about a rejected cornerstone and how people will either be broken upon it or ground to powder by it.
