Following a census decree, Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem in Luke 2:1-40, where she gives birth to Jesus, wraps Him in swaddling cloths, and places Him in a manger. Perhaps the disciples thought that everything would be smooth sailing when they chose to follow Jesus, but in Luke 8:22-25 they find themselves on the brink of death while being tossed about by wind and waves. If we likewise cannot expect ease and perfection when we follow Jesus, what then can we expect? Jesus makes a statement in Luke 20:17-19 about a rejected cornerstone and how people will either be broken upon it or ground to powder by it.
